We really appreciated Adelphia Moving. From Dave's first visit we knew they cared and appreciated us and our business. To be honest - the negative reviews made us nervous. We asked the staff about them and found the rationale of what went wrong comforting. While we were nervous we would have any of the same issues, we also know that moving is moving and issues are inevitable. We had some minor blips - the movers were later than planned for loading day which pushed the day later for everyone involved. Our stuff just barely fit into the truck - but we know that's due to some of our own unclarity of what we had to move. One concern we had was that they were going to be too-fast! But when we explained we needed a bit more time to drive down, they were super-flexible giving us time to get to our new home and arrived with 30 minutes of our delivery window. The guys were super personable and caring through our process - checking-in to make sure they were doing okay and we felt good. In turn, we provided water and lunch, which kept the team going on two very hot days. The cost was 1/3 of other estimates and overall we were thrilled with our experience with Adelphia Moving! We would use them again for sure! Thank you!!!

I would not recommend this mover. I signed a contract for 447.62 for 3 hours moving and 30 minutes travel time in the contract. This estimate was 447.62. The movers were here for a total of 4 hours including travel time. The hourly rate is 105.00 and they try to bill me 640.31 !!! That is an additional 192.69 instead of an additional 105. I told him I was not paying a extra 87.69 so he told his movers to leave and he would take me to court. I have a recording where I said I was willing to pay the 4 hours. He refused and hung up on me. I have pictures and email timeline of one of the movers on their cell phone for 15 minutes. Timeline as I text to my husband and timestamp on picture. I have pictures of a 16 ft truck and not a 22ft truck in contract. Lanre was so rude and unprofessional. I recorded the conversation and look forward to seeing him in court Again, I was willing to pay for work . Very stressful and unprofessional.

Promised to show up at 6pm sharp. They showed up at 5:50pm sharp, I can really appreciate people who promise to show up at a certain time then show up a little earlier. I have never moved on my own before with so much stuff so when I stumbled on Thumbtack, it was a great way to find movers who could accomadate my needs. Cruz was the first one to respond to me probably around 45 seconds after I submitted my inquiry, no pressure, a lot of info, a perfect 100% rating thus far. Everytime I messaged Cruz a question, it was a less than 10 minutes to respond. I really appreciate that, all our discussions was full of politeness and respect. When they showed up, Cruz and Keith didn't hesitate to introduce themselves and ask what they could help with and what I needed to move. They offered a lot of good suggestions on what to move first and how. They professionally and quickly took apart my big furnitures and put it together again quickly and easily. I am extremely impressed with their hard work and experience in moving. I felt so bad because the unit I was moving out of and the new one I was moving into had weird turns for the hallways and staircases, yet they completed the move as quickly as possible with zero complaints and smiles on their faces. In terms of their prices, I saw many other people with $105-$150 an hour but I never would have guessed my move would take around 7 hours, so for the price Cruz charges it's MORE than worth it. I would recommend Cruz Moves 110% if you want professional, respectful, prompt, and hardworking movers for all your needs.

Working with Revell Movers was excellent. They called me to let me know when they were close, and they even had a hiccup where U-Haul didn't have the right size truck so they had to go down a size, but assured me I would not be charged for any extra trips as a result of a smaller truck. Turned out we only needed to do one run. They were extremely nice, quick, and patient in taking extra things I didn't originally have on the list. Much cheaper than competitors, and it was amazing. I highly recommend Revell Moving Co!!!

My experience with John Carson Relocation was related to a long distance (1000 miles) move of household goods, tools, and yard equipment. Mr. Carson is a friendly and straight forward person. He was always on time, and kept in contact with me throughout the planning, loading, and moving so there were no surprises or worries about the timing of activities. He has integrity with regard to taking care of his customers' goods and their property. In the case where some damage did occur, he was quick to acknowledge it and 100% willing to make things right. He also went the "extra mile" to mail a piece of hardware that, unknown to everyone (including me) at the time of unloading, came off a furniture item and ended up going back to Pennsylvania on the truck. My only criticism of the move would be that I believe more care could have been applied to the moving of large furniture pieces (especially a piano). This includes the physical moving from the house to the truck and the blanketing of the items prior to removal from the house. John was short-handed during the pick-up and unloading due to some people having the flu. Not having enough help made the job more difficult and made protection of the furniture less than it should have been. That said, with roughly 45 moving boxes of items shipped along with the furniture pieces, all the boxed items arrived in good shape with no blemishes or damage of any kind.

I was looking to have movers help me move in such a short notice (less than 24hrs). Ace kindly helped me with no rush charge or other contingency fees. We set the time to meet for the next morning at 9am. Two outstanding gentleman met me at my storage unit and begin working immediately (they were super quick). I was moving my one bedroom apartment and they were able to get everything into the truck within less than an hour! They also were able to help me move everything into my house quickly. They handle my items with care and treated them like they were their own. Needless to say, I would recommend Ace Movers to anyone looking for a quick, professional, and punctual job! Thank you again for all of your services!!!!

OUTSTANDING!!! I was lucky enough to find Jeff at the last minute as my move came up very suddenly (the weekend of Labor Day). I did a lot of research and was alarmed by what I read about how moving companies handle you and your stuff. Speaking with Jeff helped to ease my nervousness. We spoke a few times on the phone and via email, he was readily available to discuss any concerns I had. The day of the move they were there before me ready and waiting, got to work immediately and had my stuff packed safely and neatly in the truck in no time. The unloading process proved much the same - again reaching the destination before me and making short order of moving me into my new place. They even put my furniture together! Jeff takes pride in his work and his staff and that shows. To anyone considering hiring him - DO NOT HESITATE - he is worth his weight in gold. If you want a smooth painless process give him a call. Thanks for making my move so very easy!

Mike did a moving out cleaning for me and he was AWESOME. Polite, friendly, thorough and detailed. I've been searching for a cleaning service like this and have gone through many candidates without this much satisfaction. I didn't know my house could get back to this clean! My only regret is that I found him right when we are moving out of the area. If we find ourselves back in his service area, we will absolutely be using 2nd Glance Cleaning and Restoration again!

So far Phil has replaced my hot water heater and put in a new light by my front door. I plan to have Phil hide cabling for a TV, mount security cameras, fix an issue with my skylight, build a storage cube, replace some two prong receptacles with three prong and patch my front steps. Phil has given me suggestions that have reduced the amount of outlay for materials. His advice and expertise has helped keep the cost of various small projects reasonable. I plan to use Phil for my handyman needs going forward.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
