Tony helped us with a refrigerator issue. He was on time and thorough, starting from the potential basic problem and working his way up. Explained each step and was conscious of any costs I would bear, both in parts and labor. Probably saved me several hundred dollars from what the manufacturer's tech would have charged. Highly recommend him

Danny is terrific! He did what we had asked, and will be doing a few other jobs as well. He knows what he is doing and can do ANYTHING to do with building and/or "handyman" tasks. I can't say enough about how knowledgeable he is. Fast, pleasant and willing to do (and CAN do) everything!

OUTSTANDING!!! I was lucky enough to find Jeff at the last minute as my move came up very suddenly (the weekend of Labor Day). I did a lot of research and was alarmed by what I read about how moving companies handle you and your stuff. Speaking with Jeff helped to ease my nervousness. We spoke a few times on the phone and via email, he was readily available to discuss any concerns I had. The day of the move they were there before me ready and waiting, got to work immediately and had my stuff packed safely and neatly in the truck in no time. The unloading process proved much the same - again reaching the destination before me and making short order of moving me into my new place. They even put my furniture together! Jeff takes pride in his work and his staff and that shows. To anyone considering hiring him - DO NOT HESITATE - he is worth his weight in gold. If you want a smooth painless process give him a call. Thanks for making my move so very easy!

Lenny installed an additional outlet in my home. He was prompt, knowlegeable in what he was doing, neat, very professional and courteous. He also took the time to do the installation properly. He quoted a labor price to do the job which was very reasonalble and that is what he charged. Parts were charged for at the price he paid for them. Nothing extra. He even bought them and brought them with him. I literally had to do nothing. All in all, I am very satisfied with the work performed and would recommend Lennny.

Bill responded quickly. We set up a time for a consultation. He reviewed the work, gave me a quote, stuck to the quote, finished his work, and worked around time frames that I was able to do. Getting work done in my bathroom (and ceiling repair on the floor below the bathroom) could not have been easier. I recommend WEB Construction Inc. Please feel free to ask me if you have any additional questions. Thanks Bill.

These guides are very good. They came in over the holiday weekend to make all repairs to our school before we opened the doors after Labor Day. I'd strongly recommend them. Truly value their patience as well!

Wow, I was hesitant to use this service for getting work done for my daughter. However choosing Alexey was a God send. He responded quickly with a quote for labor and was professional. He was punctual and came up with creative solutions for the work to be done. Alexey's work was superb and finished products were categorically slated craftsmen. He is a keeper.

Will's Home Remodeling was the general contractor for my major residential renovation at 183Jordan Road in Somers Point NJ. The project took about 4 months to complete where we completely gutted and renovated this badly damaged home that sat vacant for over 5 years. This was a $100k+ renovation for total labor and materials and Will and his team were the glue that kept the project on track and within budget. Will and his team personally completed all new vinyl siding, all new windows, new roofing, new gutters, new insulation, several new walls, stucco and cement repair, new stair steps, bathroom and shower and back splash and accent tile work, kitchen cabinet installation, wall board, spackling, caulking, trim work, door frames, shower doors and many miscellaneous requests. Will partnered well with some challenging subcontractors in the areas of plumbing, electrical, outside concrete, flooring and granite counter top installation. When the other subcontractors dropped the ball, Will was always there with a creative solution and to help get them back on task. I would definitely hire Wills Home Remodeling for my next project.

Not only did I receive a quote quickly, but all the responses to my questions came fast as well. At the end of the job, the last step requires you to go back through the following 7 steps to add something optional that would improve the integrity of my gazebo. Without hesitation, he went back all 7 steps and did the job to perfection. Many contractors would have thrown away the parts, collected their money and left. Not here! I will recommend to Family and friends and hope I can find another project to leverage them. Thanks again!

I hired Peter to do odds and ends (replace light outlets, fix loose doors/ drawers, shower water pressure, etc.) around our new home while my husband is deployed. He gave a fair estimate and game plan and was there bright and early the next week and went straight to work. He was polite and efficient and kept me in the loop throughout every project on my husbands requested to do list. When all was said and done Peter left our home in perfect order and cleaned up any mess made which I appreciated :) All around both myself and more importantly my husband was very happy with the work done, it being how he would have wanted it done had he been home to do so. We would defiantly bring PJA services back to our home should we need an extra hand around our home :)

Don provided a detailed estimate outlining material costs labor and time - he was an excellent communicator and very detail oriented. He painted a bathroom, hallway, stairwell, foyer, dining room and kitchen-he also hung 2 interior doors and installed my bathroom vanity and medicine cabinet. We are extremely happy with the finished product and will contact Don for future projects and we have already passed his information on to our friends. 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I needed some construction debris removed from my home. Jermaine showed up earlier than stated and got the job done in about 45 minutes. I loved the fact that he showed up on Labor Day! The cost for the work was fair and reasonable. I will definitely use his services again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
