I hired Robin and Frank for some exterior/interior painting and small renovations in my home that I want to put up for sale. They are not cheap but they are also not super expensive. Their estimates are "medium" in terms of cost. But their work is of excellent quality. They are also very responsive, efficient, courteous and easy to work with. They only use their own employees which improves accountability. They do not use subcontractors which is a huge plus. I would recommend them to anyone and am in fact hiring them again for additional work.

Colvin electric did an excellent job replacing an old and dangerous fuse box in my home. Colvin completed the work effectively and professionally. The company got right to work and wasted no time. The job was done quickly and minimized the time my electricity was inoperative. They cleaned up afterwards and kept the area neat. All of this was done at a very competitive price. In fact I will use them again next week. All of this and very nice guys to work with too. You can't go wrong with this company. Dan OShea

Charles disassembled and then reinstalled a closet system in our new home and he did a great job. In the past I have found it difficult to hire a handyman to do a small job like this, and I found it very helpful that Charles responded immediately to my request for the job. Additionally, he was very flexible and accommodating in terms of timing and availability. We will definitely be hiring Charles again for other jobs around our new house!

The only person I trust to work with my family for any home improvement! If he hadn't helped us last winter I don't think we would have made it. He can do any repairs and he will work with you. He replaced all my water lines, installed new floating flooring, changed out an old electric box for a new one, all new furnace, all new roof. He can tackle the most simple of electrical work to the most advanced house repairs, with ease and is super efficient with time!

We recently moved into a fixer upper that needed a decent amount of electrical work done. After getting a few pricey quotes and not feeling certain about who to hire, I went on Thumbtack and found Jordan...and I’m thankful I did. He came to check out the house right away, was on time, and sent me a very reasonable quote. On the day of the appointment, he and his great assistant, Otto, were not only on time but ended up staying late into the night to make sure everything we needed to get done, got done. He and Otto are truly two of the nicest people ever and really treated this home like their own, even vacuuming up everything when they were done. From seeing a few professionals in the past, I’m almost certain none of them would have stayed to get every task done like Jordan did. He’s the real deal and does an amazing job.

Did a fantastic job. Needed a pretty secure fence to keep critters out of a vegetable garden. He bought the supplies, adjusted the model to fit on a hillslope, reinforced the wood with chicken wire, and added a gate. The whole thing looks fantastic and was reasonably priced. He was able to do this despite my not being home most of the time (couple family members were and had little input). Then he recommended a place where I can get mushroom compost. Would definitely recommend.

Bill did a fantastic job on a few projects we had for our home. He replaced an out-of-code banister and railing to make it safe for our infant and installed a hood with an external exhaust in our kitchen. Bill has a great eye for design and puts great care into the small details. His inputs and suggestions made what I envisioned even better. He worked cleanly, quickly and communicated well with us. I appreciated that he looked for opportunities to help us save money, such as finding the hood that I wanted through a vendor that cost much less than where I was planning to purchase it. He and Dan were easy going, fun and friendly; it was very comfortable to have them in our home as they worked. Bill is the person we will be hiring for our future improvement projects.

This turned into a chimney repair project. I was getting leaks into my home every time there was a hard rain. Thought it was caused by my gutters and downspouts backing up. Leak was apparently caused by cracks in fireplace.

My wife and I have had Right Angle Construction come to our house for 3 projects thus far (laundry/bath, full bath, home office), and we will be using them for every other upgrade we plan to do (at least 4-5 major renovations.) Dan has been an absolutely fantastic contractor; extremely knowledgeable, incredible attention to details, and delivers beautiful results, on time and on budget. We are fortunate to have found him, and are very excited to have him help us make out house truly our own home.

Charles and Bill did a superb job installing 2 flat screen tvs in my home . One of the tvs was very large and heavy and required special care. They were also very helpful with other issues not directly related to the installs. I couldn't be happier with their work and plan to rely on them for future jobs.

Mike with M&D Electric did a wonderful job of addressing a variety of electrical issues in our home. He updated our electrical panel, plugs and switches along with some interior and exterior lighting. He also installed a couple ceiling fans. The quote he gave us was very reasonable and he stuck to it. He was prompt, courteous, and professional and the work was top quality. I highly recommend M&D Electric and would use them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who wall mounts TVs?

Electricians, handymen and TV installation specialists may all provide television mounting services. The person who does the mounting should be qualified and knowledgeable about basic construction concepts as well as working with audiovisual cables. In general, no specialized certificates are required to provide television mounting services, but as always do your diligence and make smart hiring decisions.

It’s important to find an experienced professional who will ensure the TV wall mount meets building code. Most regions have fire codes that don’t permit high-voltage power cords behind walls (low-voltage wires like HDMI and video cables are generally acceptable). A basic wall mount on drywall may take approximately one to two hours, while more complex mounts on brick or stone with hidden cables can take three or more hours. If you need more electrical outlets installed near your entertainment system, you may want to hire an electrician. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost for surround sound installation?

If you’re installing your dream home theater, you want the perfect sound system to round it out. The cost for surround sound installation will vary based on the speaker system you select, the amount of wiring and prep required for the job, and labor rates in your region. Home theater installation specialists can advise on the best surround sound speakers for your space and the technology you are using. Here are some examples of average home theater installation costs and the cost of surround sound speakers:

  • TV wall mount and up to 5 wall-mounted speakers with hidden wires: $399.
  • 60-inch TV and small home system: $2,080.
    • Equipment cost: $1,680.
      • Five box speakers and subwoofer: $500.
      • Three HDMI wires: $30.
      • Surround amp: $250.
      • 60-inch TV and bracket: $900.
      • Labor cost: $400 Including setup, wiring and TV mounting.
  • Projector and screen system plus audio wiring throughout home: $12,900.
    • Equipment cost: $9,900.
      • Approximate wire costs: $2,700.
      • Projector and bracket: $1,500.
      • 110-inch screen: $600.
      • Surround amp: $500.
      • 5-inch ceiling speakers and sub: $1,400.
      • Remote control system: $400.
      • Eight zones of speakers and volume controls: $2,800 ($350 each)
      • Labor cost: $3,000. Includes prewiring for 5-inch ceiling speakers, one subwoofer, one 20-inch to 50-inch HDMI, Cat. 6 control wire to projector, 1.5-inch tube for future wire changes, and wiring for two to eight additional audio zones throughout the home. All equipment (audio boxes, amps, cable box, etc.) is concealed. The audio zones are controllable by iOS devices from anywhere in the home.
