Josh Ryer and Ryer Martial Arts Academy has been an all around fantastic experience for my 8 year old son. He has been at the academy for almost 3 years and has recently earned his Jr Orange belt. Josh has an amazing way of "getting" my son, who is a unique learner, tends to be quiet, introspective and a keen observer. Instead of displaying impatience or demanding answers like many adults have with my son, Josh patiently awaits answers while explaining the importance of learning some assertiveness skills and taking risks in demonstrating his martial arts skills or speaking up in class. My son is slowly realizing, in this supportive environment, that he can take risks, he can speak up, and he can demonstrate what he knows. I highly recommend Ryer and all the staff who work with the kids in learning valuable martial arts skills as well as the often "under taught" skills of proper ways to handle bullies, keeping safe, using words appropriately and assertiveness skills.

Before deciding upon a martial art school to join, I looked into a variety of programs. And, while each had their merits, none seemed to have the complete package I was looking for: that is, until I walked through the doors of Ryer Academy. After touring the facility and talking to Josh, joining was a no brainer. But as positive as my experience has been with the adult classes, I have to say that I am most impressed with Ryer Academies Bullying Prevention and Verbal Judo programs. These programs teach kids how to verbally diffuse a volatile situation before it becomes physical. These "verbal" self-defense skills aren't even talked about, let alone taught in most area schools and are the heart & soul of the Ryer way of winning a fight before a punch is thrown. If on the other hand violence is unavoidable, students at Ryer Academy are taught to defend themselves from three very important ranges: Kicking- punching, standing grappling, and the ground. This was a huge selling point for me as most of the other schools I visited only specialize in teaching one range. It's was over four years ago that I walked through the doors of Ryer Academy and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. This Academy has literally helped me take my life to the next level! It comes as no surprise that Ryer was voted best in the Burgh by the Tribune Review and won the Nickelodeon Parents Choice Award. Denny F
