Ms. Jill was excellent from the start. She met with my daughter for an initial "introduction" meeting before getting started with an actual tutoring session to ensure it would be a good fit and that my daughter would be comfortable with her. She spoke in length with me to get to know my child's strengths, weaknesses, personalities and what exactly I was looking for in a tutor. Ms. Jill really connects with my daughter and works to find out where she is weak in reading comprehension and vocabulary so she can help strengthen those weaknesses. My daughter has a learning difference and Ms. Jill has proven to be able to navigate through that to help her understand the information being taught. She is very patient, kind and understanding which makes it a great fit for my daughter who can at times be very sensitive and get frustrated when not catching on as quick as she would like to. In just a few sessions, Ms. Jill has helped boost her confidence and given her strategies to help with reading comprehension, synonyms, antonyms and vocabulary in school and during testing. I highly recommend Mrs. Max as a tutor, especially for children with learning differences. She really gets through and makes a difference.

LEAH IS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!! I have a 19 year old son who needed extra help with Math, preparing for his ACT. Leah took the time in the beginning to find out how he learns and what style works best for him. This key!!! She is well prepared and takes her tutoring seriously. I can honestly say for the first time he comes home feeling confident about what he is learning he is not intimidated, not afraid to ask questions. First time learning Math without becoming frustrated. Highly recommend Leah, she is an excellent teacher, she is patient, soft spoken and really cares about what she is doing!! THANK YOU LEAH BERL!!!

Will was able to reach my high school daughter and relate to her through her outside interests. He was highly encouraging to her and helped build her confidence in her math skills. We have used his tutoring on and off for 3 years. Her grades are always better when she receives consistent tutoring from Will. I highly recommend him especially if your child is struggling with self-confidence in an academic area.

Michael provided college Calculus tutoring in person to my twins during the holiday Winter break, to prepare them to repeat Calculus in the Spring term, as they both struggled and failed when they were initially exposed to Calculus in college in the Fall. He will continue to be available remotely during the Spring to help them as needed while they are away in college. Michael was a fantastic tutor, and was very patient with them. My twins learned a lot from him, and he was able to identify some gaps in their knowledge. He simplified and clarified a lot of the basic concepts, and this should help tremendously as they are retaking Calculus in the Spring. I highly recommend him without any reservations.

I’ve taken my SATs a couple of times and although I am not a bad student, I just felt that I could have done better, I knew it inside, but just could not find where it was. I got the Getting Into The Ivys tutoring program and worked with a Chelsea tutor. What I really like about my tutor is that she’s a qualified teacher and is professional and knows how to actually teach concepts properly. I really did not want to take any chances. Going to university is very important to me and my family. Susan my tutor developed a special study plan just for me, which helped me focus on my key weaknesses, without feeling de-motivated, in-fact I was so enthused by her, I actually looked forward to all my sessions. She is a brilliant tutor and I am so very grateful. I was able to increase my composite core by 100. I am very pleased.

Ms. Musick has been working with my 9th grade daughter in Algebra II. I can't not say enough about how this tutoring has change my daughters math experience — she has gone from struggling with homework and tests to a consistent understanding of the math process. Additionally, she has gone up 2 full grades in the time that Nancy has been working with her. Nancy is a caring and patient teacher who has more then once adjusted her schedule to work with my daughter for tests and midterms. I highly recommend her services and greatly appreciate her professionalism.

My 7th grade year in Algebra I Honors, I started to face adversity when it came to critical thinking and analyzing my materials for exams. I contacted Dianne Le and ever since the first session I have changed my work ethic and have become a better individual. Although the rigor tried to take over and frustrate/limit my abilities, Dianne knew how to teach me to limit my stress and make outlines instead of burning out. Whenever my normal teachers approach on a problem did not 'click' Dianne would go out of her way to make me understand it in another way through her artistic abilities. Thanks to Dianne, I managed to raise my grade from a C to an A; later allowing me to apply to a scholarship program and get in. Later on in 8th grade whenever I needed help for my program she would always be available and often made the commute to my town regardless of her tight schedule. Right now Im in 9th grade and Dianne still reaches out and helps me out whenever I am in need. She even took her time to send me a list of service learning opportunities 2 years later!! She is no longer just my math tutor, but she has become a role model and some may even say my mentor. Kudos to her

About

Hello, I'm Sam Zappala. I've been a math tutor since 1998. When I work with the students, if there's an easier way; I'll inform them. This is how I gain their respect. I teach algebra, geometry and trigonometry. I will also get into SI (metrics). When working with geometry and/or trigonometry, the first formulas I want them to remember are: a^2+b^2=c^2, for right triangles; and a/sin?=b/sin?=c/sin?, for all triangles. I've been working with numbers since I was a teenager. When I was putting myself through school, I was working in a warehouse. I would do the math in my head before somebody else could punch it into a calculator. I've got the ability; now I need to pass it on. I have an MD in Mechanical Engineering. Please see the resume. I also designed several tools. I am now attempting to get one on the market.

About

I am a teacher with over 20 years of experience from Middle School through Secondary Education. I will instruct in several areas of need. I can guarantee 100% satisfaction, with commitment to instructional recommendations and effort.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

I am looking for a good foundation to get her off to a good start in Algebra 1. Her high school says that I may have a copy of her Math text she will be using in the fall.
