I had Justin and his assistant come in to take down a 30' maple tree that was 90% dead. It was overhanging my shed and also the neighbor's hot tub cabana. I had 4 other helpers on site and we all worked under Justin's command. I was amazed at his ability to assess the situation and bring it down, piece by piece, in a manner that was safe and controlled. The reality of it is that bringing all of that massive weight down to the ground is a very dangerous task. But in the end, nobody got hurt and nothing was damaged. Thank you, Justin. You did an amazing job. A+

Anthony's Couture Property Maintenance company did an outstanding combined gardening/mulching job on my front lawn, including trenching and mulching along one side of the house. First, within a couple of hours after my initial request, Anthony responded with some detail about his work, including an impressive list of reviews. Second, he committed time to come to my home for an assessment of what I wanted done. I was very impressed with his listening skills and the suggestions he offered, based on his having listened well to what I wanted done. He took before-the-job photos and by the evening of the same day had sent a detailed estimate for labor and materials. In additional to good listening skills, Anthony communicates well. He kept in touch regarding plant and tree purchase, weather/rain issues, and the need for an updated start date. He and one of his team arrived on time and worked steadily according to the requested layout. They cleaned up the sidewalk and street area of debris, including hosing down my driveway. The result is beautifully manicured beds with trees and plants layed out as requested. Anthony impressed me as focused and conscientious about his work. I highly recommend his services and would use his company again in the future. Regards, Theresa Ware

Chris did a fantastic job given the slope and uneven terrain of my yard. Weather played a major factor in getting the job done but I was always informed about delays and knew when things were going to happen. The work was finished much quicker than I expected and the price was better than I expected. It was a pleasure working with him and I will definitely use him for my next fence job.

Trevor did an amazing job! He was so extremely knowledgeable and really helped to point us in the right direction with what we wanted for our project. The guys planted over 25 trees, dug all the holes and left a drip system to help the trees get established. Everything looks great and we couldn't be happier! Will definitely be using again for future projects.

We hired Baylor Tree Service to chop down a 50' tree near our patio. Brad said he could do the job 8/19. On 8/19 his crew showed up and did an excellent job. No damage was done to the new patio and they did an amazing job cleaning up the debris. My husband and I are very happy with the job. We would definitely hire them again and probably will soon for the other bothersome trees in our yard.

Russ came on time and took care of my tree stump in a very professional manner. The tree grinder was huge. He took 2 fences apart and moved it in. He guided it through my landscape and did not disturb my flower garden. Russ took his time to guide the "beast" of a machine to the stump. Once he maneuvered through the ocstacles he did the job in record time. When he was finished he put things back like he found them. YES... I will highly recommend him to my friends and neighbors. He is a keeper!

My yard was an absolute mess. Weeds had taken over all areas and plants/trees where in need of trimming. I also had tree stumps and other plants that needed to be removed. My pond was in need of a cleaning and a new pump as well. Bucks County Nursery came in and completely revitalized my property. They were very easy to work with and were flexible when I wanted to make changes. They showed up on time and completed the work as promised. They went above and beyond to accommodate all my requests. I will definitely use Bucks Country Nursery for any of my future landscaping needs.

We had Hector and his crew out on Friday to take down a half dead very tall tree. We left 8 foot of it so we could still use our bird feeders. They did a great job and left our property looking like they were never there! Great clean up and haul away of the old tree! He was reasonably priced also for a climber job and we'll definitely use his company again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
