Monique is friendly, professional, and responds in a timeline fashion to all communications. She is trustworthy as well: she made sure we spoke on the phone so that she could get a sense of my actual need before quoting a dollar value for her services. Afterwards, she followed up with a formal emailed quote for a reasonable price. She completed my tax preparation on-time and was very willing to answer any questions I had after I received my forms back from her. This is only my second time filing taxes and she was very patient and helpful when we spoke on the phone. I would recommend her!

Nicole Is AWESOME!!! Not only is she completely professional and knowledgeable, but she organized my box of crumpled receipts and scanned them into the computer for me. So handy! Nicole really knows her taxes also. She amended my 2010 return and got me $950 more than my last accountant had. She showed me how to keep track of my bookkeeping on QuickBooks, and showed me deductions I could be taking and dont. Oh, and she is VERY affordable and does not try to get you to buy services you dont need. I would definitely recommend Nicole and TSBAS. They are great to work with!!!

I contacted Thumb Tack for a bookkeeper, and Barbara responded very quickly, with a reasonable rate. After arranging a meeting at hour home office ,we recognized that Barbara is a quick thinker and is very knowledgeable with QBs. I appreciate her no none sense approach when it comes to book keeping. For the inexperienced she has a special way of explaining aspects of QBs that make it easier to understand. She is helping us catch up on entries and will be training us to utilize more option in QBs. The new training will allow me more time to work in the field and less time in the office. Anyone considering hiring a Professional Bookkeeper should definitely contact Barbara. I always assumed I could not afford a professional ,I now realize I should have hire a professional years ago. Barbara, my wife and I Thank You for helping her get me caught up, on entries and for the future training . My wife already has a full time office job, this will free up her up to enjoy more weekends. It will also give me more time in the field to increase my gross profit. Sincerely, Rich Weidner/ Ally Handyman Services, LLC

Michael has been outstanding. He has given me everything I wanted in a very timely fashion and now I continue to work with him on valuations to procure financing for my business ventures. Since time is always the most important resource when it comes to new businesses Michael has gone out of his way to meet me or respond in a timely manner just to clarify issues that I had questions on. This is what customer service should be from every other corporation.

Kristen put her all energies into helping me organize my Quickbooks in time for the accountant. They had gotten very messed up with several workers using my books. She persevered with my highly stressful day and even took time in-between her busy schedule to grant me screen time during her many appointments so I would make my deadline! I would highly recommend her. She knows what she is doing and she will do her best to help.

About

I currently work for a contractor, doing all his administration work: All A/P and A/R, taxes, payroll, client emailing, website updating, estimates and all paper work. He was doing everything manually, and I converted everything to the computer using QuickBooks. I have been using QuickBooks for about 7 years, and have completely changed the way he does business; he gets his billing done quickly, with a professional-looking invoice emailed to the client, and is paid in days. I am able to produce any type of report to see how the business is doing, to how high the expenses are in that month or quarter, whatever he would like to see. All taxes are e-filed and e-paid through QuickBooks; making life that much easier. I am also a web designer, so I created a website for the business, where people can contact the company for an estimate, which has brought in many customers, who are now recurring customers. I can bring many services to your company, plus, I pick up things very quickly, so you should have no downtime. I also have the experience with data entry while I was in purchasing working with inventory. I type well on the computer, and I enjoy that too. I really would like to branch out and take on more businesses, and learn new things and meet new people. So, if you think that we could work well together, do not hesitate to contact me; I will be ready and waiting.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
