"Working with Cait was an awesome experience. We thought it was going to be stressful and it was quite the opposite. From the beginning she was very responsive and helpful. She sent us all the information we needed to know and all the options to chose from. If it was something we didn't understand she explained it and the significance behind it. She was eager to help and answered all of our calls/texts. The ceremony was beautiful and she was professional and personable. We didn't even have to reverse and it went smoothly and the way we wanted. She doesn't try to sway your decisions and she respects your beliefs. Her church is very open and we felt the love. I would hire her again but hopefully this will be my only marriage. 😝 Thanks Cait for being part of our day and making it special."

"My husband and I are so happy to have met Rev. Lisa and have her perform our ceremony. She is very down to earth, a kind and loving person. She made us feel comfortable with her from our very first meeting, it was like hanging out with a friend you just haven't seen in a while. She read our ceremony script beautifully! Even our guests came up to us at the reception and complimented us on the ceremony and how great they thought Rev. Lisa is! She gave us a big hug afterward, wished us love and happiness and even though she probably does a lot of ceremonies and meets a lot of couples, it was very heartfelt. It was such a pleasure to have her as a part of our day and I would highly recommend her to anyone with an event needing the services that she offers! Thank you Rev. Lisa!!"

"We found Pastor Rich on thumbtack and used him to officiate our wedding. We had our ceremony in a hotel and he arrived on time and prepared. We also requested his services the evening before for the rehearsal where he ran us through how things would work. He had not used the venue before, but was able to make it work for his normal procedures during the rehearsal dinner. He met my finance (at the time) and I at a central meeting location and got to know us prior to our wedding. Our guests were pleased with his humor and we enjoyed our experience with him. I would recommend if you are looking for someone to officiate, but don't already have someone in mind."

"Good day! my name is Mrs Tanisha Best, my husband and I had the pleasure to work with Mrs Syreeta Washington. And I will be thrill to share my experience from day one. Mrs Washington was professional, we met several months before the wedding so we both can get to know as well as understand the wedding timeline. Mrs Washington showed my husband and I her passion for what she does and she was not afraid to crack a joke. Here or there to lighten things up after our wedding meeting. She's also surprise us with an early wedding gift which speaks a lot about her character at the ceremony. Mrs Washington arrive hour an one half early just to go over timeline,as well as extending a helping hand to whoever needs it. Mrs Washington also handle countless issues that occurred. For example, the Dj we hired was playing dirty music while guest were arriving .Mrs Washington kindly suggested formal/ classical music to be played. Everyone was please with the way she greeted them. The way she presented herself as well as the way she spoke during the ceremony. I truly appreciate all her hard work and I would honestly work with her again. "

"Karen was such a great find. Not only was she creative with our love story but made the ceremony go so smooth. It was beyond what I had imagined. Me and my husband wanted simple but meaningful, she delivered all that and then some. With only speaking and meeting a few times, she never felt like a stranger. She just made my day the day I wanted. We couldn't have been happier with having her!!"

"We were married by Pastor Deborah on October 26th 2002. We were both honored to have her marry us. Coming up on our 15th wedding anniversary this year and we still have the two rocks she presented to us during our ceremony. What a memorable day!"

"Michael and I have been together and in a loving, committed relationship for 26 years. When the federal government finally overruled the ban on Marriage Equality, we were ready to legalize our love. Rev. Rob worked with us before Equality for general spiritual counseling and married us this past weekend. He truly is a very centered and spiritual person and leads us through thick paths that life often places before us.. He has an amazing sense of calmness and we know that we can always be at rest with him as we hit our inevitable speed bumps in life. Of course it costs money for any wedding celebrant, but what Michael and I got in return is beyond description. He is a loving and caring individual and truly tends to the needs of others and has no pretentions at all. We felt so comfortable with him and got to know him as a friend and not just a minister. I would never leave Michael, but I would love to have Rev. Rob marry me again. So, we look forward to a house blessing in July and a renewal of vows each anniversary. Whatever it takes to have him in our lives! We wish all of the best for this kind and gentle man. Wishing you all a peaceful wedded life, Paul and Michael Anderson-Moran ."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
