Clare Owings was just wonderful. Something that I found extremely valuable was that she listened to my situation very well so she gave me pointers and suggestions taking into consideration my lifestyle. My 9-month-old dog has learned so much just after two sessions with her. She is excellent with dogs and, maybe more importantly, with dog owners. She knew how to "handle" my dog and me pretty well. I appreciated her coming not only to my house but also to the dog park and to places where I walk with my dog. I really recommend her!

I had Rose take care of my dog Rocco for one week. Rose kept me informed on a daily basis and was an outstanding pet sitter for my dog. She took pictures and videos with her and Rocco playing. I felt very comfortable and I knew Rose could get the job done at 110%. I would definitely recommend Rose for any type of pet sitting.

I simply cannot recommend Once Upon a Dog Tail enough!! Cara and her team are fantastic- detail oriented, thorough, really care about their clients (the dogs!) and their owners and they clearly love what they do! From our initial meeting, it was clear they wanted to know everything they could do to help our dogs feel comfortable and well cared for while we went away for the week. Two different pet-sitters split the time away and by the time we got home, my house looked cleaner than when I left! I especially enjoyed the daily updates and pictures that were emailed to me. Once Upon a Dog Tail truly pays attention to every little detail and takes phenomenal care of the pets they watch. It is so nice to use a business that goes above and beyond! Thank you Cara for all you did for us! We (and the dogs! ) can hardly wait for the next time we can use your services again.

Robin has been our pet sitter for over 20 years. I wouldn't trust anyone else in our home, with our pets! Robin knows everyone individually, and watches every detail closely. Our pets love her, look forward to seeing her, and are certainly very pampered while we are away!! We highly recommend Robin's Pampered Pets!!

Greg and Julie have always taken exceptionally great care of my pets both in my home and at theirs. They also care for many if not all of my friends pets as the need arise. They care for and love all animals as if they were their own. I have known the nurse ill animals to better health. My pets love them like family. What more could we ask for from the best pet sitters around.

Roberta takes the best care of our pup! As first time puppy parents, we were so worried to leave our girl while we went to work. Roberta is always reliable and gives us such peace of mind that our pup is in good hands. We love getting daily photos and seeing how happy and well taken care of she is.

Kayla has watched my dogs several times when I have had to go out of town. She is flexible with drop off and pick up times and that helps me out SO much. She also has dogs of her own, so she understands the hardship of leaving pets behind and she puts in so much effort to make sure they're cared for. I recommend her to anyone looking for a kind, caring pet sitter!

Rose has pet sit my fur babies for the past 5 years. She is impressively responsible, trustworthy and professional, which immediately allowed me to quickly feel a great deal of trust towards her. Since meeting her, I only use her to care for my cats and dogs when I go out of town - no one else. My animals are always calm and well cared for upon my return. The best assurance I can have when I'm away from home is her messages telling me my pets are fine, happy and well-tended. Rose is an amazing pet sitter - she has certainly found her calling because she is wonderful at it! And I am SO THANKFUL I've found her!

Text updates and pictures of the Pups! How nice! Usually when we come home from a trip the dogs are crazy for attention for a few days, after Laurie watched after them they were just like, "oh hi, your home. No big deal". Lol I think Laurie gave them a lot of attention while she was at the house! Thank you Laurie!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
