I have hired Dave for several projects. He has hung siding on my garage, laid Allure flooring in my bathroom, living room and a bedroom. He installed a new bathroom sink and vanity. He has painted most of the rooms in my home and has done some landscape work as well. Dave is very professional. Completes projects in a timely manner, and is meticulous about detail and cleanup. I recommend Dave to anyone looking for handyman projects. Will hire him again for sure!!

This was the third time we used Andrew / Garage Entry Systems and this was the most complicated and biggest project so far. Low headroom, short track, uneven floors....Andrew worked with us to ensure we were satisfied and that everything worked out as expected. He is very professional, reliable and helpful. His prices are fair and very competitive. I highly recommend Andrew and will continue using him for all my garage door needs. Thanks Andrew!

Foreman Jeff is a gem. Original project was tearing up cracked basement floor, installing sump and pouring new floor. My pipe burst under my kitchen sink while he was here demolishing the floor and he fixed that as well. Super guy. Offered his services on future projects and will definitely use him when I am ready for more projects!

My wife and I hired Leo recently to help us demo a kitchen and dining room to move forward with a remodel. He showed up on time to give us a bid, which was quite reasonable, then returned the next day to remove 2 large radiators, remove flooring, and move a built in cabinet. He was communicative and professional and we plan to keep using his services throughout our project.

Repairs to parts of the living room wall were necessary due to drywall tape coming off. Also in one bathroom there was a gap between the tub and tile floor. Tom fixed all the problem areas to my satisfaction. Between the work and the initial consult he made 3 visits and was there at the time he said he would be each time. He explained what he was going to do thoroughly and finished in a timely manner. I would definitely use Tom's services again and would recommend him to others.

After making the decision to refinish our hardwood floors on our first floor we contacted several companies to get some estimates for the job. We went with Jason and he was by far the best. He was timely, answered all questions, was well priced, and did an excellent job with our floors. We would highly recommend him and we plan to use him again when we refinish our second floor in the spring!

Derek and his crew were great, They came in and renovated my hole house in less than a week, They painted and fixed and refinished all walls of my new house. At the end of the project he had to do a special trip to do the final touch ups on my wall, witch he did with a big smile on his face and great attitude as he always has. Home Depot was the one that refer me to him and as you know Them do an extensive back grown and reputation check. I am very glad he took the time to do my home and if I need him I'll call him to come back. Thank you very much and as soon as I get the house clean I'll post pictures of his great work. Thank you guys.

Harding GC did my tile flooring in my entry way which was done in outstanding timing and looks spectacular! Thomas even suggested a different design to go with to make it look more extravagant. They also replaced my bathroom door for me. Not a single thing I can think of that I could complain about. Highly recommended!

Mike was hired to install Pergo Outlast flooring in my living room and dining room. This gentleman and his assistant arrived timely and were prepared to get busy. No time was wasted. Before they began Mike discussed in detail my expectations and appeared very conscientious and it was obvious he was eager to accommodate my needs. Mike had informed me prior to the installation date that the job would require possibly 6 hours. The job and clean up was actually completed in 5 1/2 hours. The clean up process was fantastic. Both men were very friendly as well as professional. They were highly skilled and the quality of work was simply sensational. I highly recommend Caporali Floors to anyone who is need of any type of wood flooring being installed. I'm confident you will be impressed with the outcome. The overall professionalism, the quality, and the value was simply UNTOUCHABLE. I look forward to using their services in the future. Thank you Caporali Floors for the beautiful craftmanship.

David and his team did a great job refinishing our hardwood floors. Very professional and dependable--they explained each step in the process, were always on time, and cleaned the work area before departing each day. Refinishing hardwood can be a messy process, but they made an extra effort to contain the dust and debris to help minimize the impact in other areas of the house. I highly recommend them.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
