We had an engagement party for two of my kids (25/30) and it turned out great. Stevie was so accommodating and professional. People enjoy the ability to request songs from his extensive catalog. And I got to jam with him on two songs. I'll be sure to hire him again for future functions!

Damon has been a fantastic music teacher and life mentor to both my teenage sons that has instilled a life long love of music in both of them. One of my boys is a guitarist and studied with Damon directly. The other is a saxophonist who received excellent preparation at DFMA that resulted in him being accepted into the prestigious GHS Jazz Band as an incoming freshman. Not only has Damon/DFMA provided my sons excellent music education, they've also learned a great deal about tenacity and attitude that positively impacts their other pursuits and relationships.

Tom transformed me from a mediocre guitarist into a musician. His approach to teaching shows that he more than cares about his students and helps them in more ways than just technical guitar ability. The more you put in to music lessons, the more you get out of them. Tom inspired me to put thought and effort into music and ended up teaching me so much. I'm now a student in the University of Miami's jazz program and Tom prepared me for much more than to play guitar in the program and pass out of music theory classes. With his help I developed a solid base of knowledge and skills and most importantly learned how to think about and create music. I now feel confident to be able to adapt to any musical setting and progress. For example, leading a band or a group of musicians in a jam session now seems a fun task rather than a daunting one. His resume and history of musical and teaching experience is extremely impressive but I actually had no idea about that until over a year or two in to our lessons. He is one of the most humble people I've met in music. There is so much to be learned just by talking to him and hearing his thoughts on music. There is no one I'd recommend more to teach guitar for anyone, absolute beginner through accomplished guitarist. For an hour each week I could tell the thing that mattered most to him was helping me grow. He's also an amazing guitarist.

Joel is an incredible teacher! He helped me and 2 other friends (who also take classes with him around the same time) to put together a band that was playing live shows after 6 months of lessons. All of us were completely novice musicians. He even learned how to play a new instrument, the Andean charango, so he could teach one of our band members how to incorporate it into our playing. Joel's lessons are fun and disciplined. Exactly the combination you want for making progress and staying invested in learning how to play your instrument.

Carman Bryant is an amazing vocalist who channels the soul and vibe of Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, and Mary J. Blige to name a few, not to mention her ability to sing in any style or genre, from soul to blued to jazz to funk.

Rags to Riches played for our church's car show last year. They performed a well-balanced set, incorporating musical favorites from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. The members of the band conducted themselves with a high degree of professionalism: they were punctual, well-prepared, and courteous, making for a family-friendly atmosphere. We had a great a GREAT experience, and I would certainly use the band again!

We hired this band to play a spring time event for our club. They were fair professional and most important A GREAT BAND. They made the entire event a real party! This is a ten piece band that had everyone up, dancing and having fun. If you need a band to bring your party to life look no further ( the three piece horn section brought a sound you just don't get with most bands). Please feel free to contact me for more detailed view of the event and how they made this a great party. Thanks to the entire group. I would definitely use this group again and highly recommend them for any event .

Billy and co are top notch. I've known Mr. Martin for a long time and he's played many events at my place in a couple different bands. He's a consummate professional and a good dude. FFRD is unique because they don't really sound like any one band. They're a combination of quite a few different genres, people of all ages will get what they do and they are super tight for such a big band. Hire them.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

          • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
          • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
          • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
