Jay was awesome in every possible way! He did a small gutter install for a valley roof issue and matched the gutter color exactly to the house color and even installed aluminum mesh guards free of charge. I plan on hiring him in the spring to replace all the gutters on two homes I own. If you need gutters (repair or install), he is the BEST - so definitely hire him or you may live with regrets...Rob A

Overall, we had a tremendous experience with H&R roofing! Ray and his crew kept us informed of the progress every step of the way. Unfortunately, we were hit with some unexpected challenges during our home renovation, but Ray and his crew provided us with reassurance and sound advice during this time. Their work was clean and well-done. We are impressed by their attention to detail. I would certainly recommend using H&R roofing for any roofing, siding, window projects!

Ernie was incredibly responsive and kind. We did run into some difficultly with one job in particular. Mainly a roof that had significant rotting which became apparent as the flashing got pulled away. Not only did we have rotting wood and insulation, Ernie discovered a large carpenter ant nest nestled in the roof along with all the rotting wood. Time will tell as to whether or not all of the issues were completely resolved however I do want to note Ernie's incredibly hard work and dedication to getting the job done. Danielle

I hired Todd to clean my gutters and roof, he upsold me Leaf Relief gutter guards to prevent gutter clogs (my gutters were filled with weeds). Todd was very responsive to messages, he came out to give me a quote quickly and when I told him I needed time before hiring him for the job he was very polite and understanding. When I was ready for Todd to begin work he was able to start the job within days. I did not feel not pressured, and felt Todd was understanding to my needs. My roof looks great and gutters are protected, Thanks Todd.

We had Cleynira Construction paint the 1st floor of our house. They did a beautiful job. It was completed in two days and the fee was very reasonable. Clarindo and his crew were a pleasure to work with. We will definitely call him for future improvements.

I sent in my request at midnight and the next day in the morning they were here and said they could actually do three out of three projects where I thought they only could do two out of three projects. They were so nice and did great work very polite and very reasonable Replace basement windows fixed lag bolts under the deck and did some roofing work. I'm selling the house and the new buyer wanted all of this done and for years I've been trying to find someone just to do the basement windows Good people. Good job. Good price. And right on time. What more could you ask for?

I had Steven inspect my roof and attic after a windstorm event. Steve very honestly told us the roof was in good shape and did not need any repair. He actually didn’t even charge for his visit and even wrote a report and shared pictures of his visit. I insisted myself to pay $200 for his labor and time. Great example of the type of contractor you all hope to hire. I will definitely call him for my next roofing/water damage job. Very nice guy.

Of the five responses that I received for minor roof repair work, Andres was the only one that provided an actual estimate even though I provided ample photographs and details on Thumbtack. The team showed up on time, well prepared to tackle the assignment. The fixes to broken tiles were done so that you could not tell the difference from the original roofing. He also repaired some flashing and nailed down some tiles that were starting to come up without any extra charges. I thought that the price was very reasonable for the work that was done, requiring two people. Very nice guys also!

They had a last minute cancellation and were able to accommodate our roofing needs much sooner than expected. Of all the roofers who provided estimates, they were the only one to ask to see the roof from the attic. They also accommodated our request to have the cupola and weathervane removed.

Eric was extremely knowledgeable about my minor roofing issues. His estimate of amount of work needed was accurate and his price was very reasonable for my small project. He came on time both to review my project and to do the job. Eric worked diligently and nonstop on the project until it was done. He cleaned up all of debris afterwards and hulled it away. I really appreciate his expertise, workmanship, and professionalism. He’s a great roofer. I will definitely hire him again if I have another roofing job. Thanks Eric, my flashing looks great.

We have a shed basically attached to our basement. It's under a deck and the original asphalt roofing was looking horrible. It was moments from beginning to leak. Jesse came over and gave us an estimate, we accepted it, and the work is now done. It looks very good. We had another estimate for much more with perhaps more glamorous materials, like copper, but this work is what it needed. Several years ago Jesse replaced a sagging gutter. He's a no-frills guy. No mess, just works until it's done. I'll call him again. Oh the 2 items I didn't check - no biggie. He delayed the original date by 2 days, didn't matter to us, he told us ahead of time. And value, wait, what, it isn't free??? We felt it was a good bid.

Brett McNamara was a true professional, meeting every need we had in a timely manner. We had a deadline to meet, and he finished several jobs on time and within budget, doing superb work. We are going to hire him to maintain our properties as the needs arise. Not only did he install gutters 3 stories high, he roofed the porch, installed vents, and completed several interior jobs to our satisfaction. He was always punctual and honest, a man you can trust to do the job properly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
