Natasha did bridal makeup for myself (the bride), two of my bridesmaids, and my mother and everyone was incredibly happy with her work. Interpersonally, she was friendly and easy-going which put everyone at ease, and professionally her work was wonderful - our makeup had a polished and elegant touch without looking overdone. I would definitely recommend her to other brides.

Alicia came to my home in Westford, MA to do my bridal makeup trial. She came on-time (a few minutes early, in fact) and spent roughly 2 1/2 hours on it. Afterwards, we had a very nice conversation for a while longer before she left. She was very meticulous and really took her time to get things right. Alicia is very friendly and made me feel comfortable and beautiful. You can clearly tell that she has a passion for her craft. I feel that I couldn't have made a better choice with her. If you need a makeup artist for any occasion, I would wholehearted recommend Alicia. She's the best!

Morgan and Destiny provided hair, makeup, and nail services to me and 4 other members of my bridal party on 9/10. Both ladies are bubbly and put me at ease while they artfully applied makeup and created beautiful hairstyles. They are both skilled stylists, and they use quality products. Even the flower girl approved (and she's a very picky four year old!). I would not hesitate to recommend the Behind the Scene girls to any bride.

Arionna is a very talented make up artist. She did my makeup for a friends wedding and I was so pleased with the results that I didn't even want to wash my makeup off at the end of the day! My makeup looked very glamorous and was done very neatly. She listened to what I wanted and made great suggestions to what would look great on me. I highly recommend her!

I barely wear makeup but when I went to Amanda, she made me feel comfortable and look beautiful. I have had terrible experience in the past with makeup artist, Amanda make the process enjoyable and relaxing. She is the only person I would allow to do my makeup when going out for an event. Would recommended her to anyone who is looking for a makeup artist.

Lindsay did my makeup recently for a wedding. I've had makeup done professionally in the past but never like this! I have honestly never felt more beautiful. She used quality products and really focused on what looked best on my skin tone/coloring. She is incredibly talented. I could never recreate the look myself. Lindsay is by far the best makeup artist I’ve ever come across and I would recommend her to anyone. My only regret is I didn’t know of her work when I got married a four years ago!

My experience with Rose was great from start to finish! I emailed to schedule my appointment and she responded very shortly after, we exchanged numbers and confirmed the day of. She came to me and managed to do mine and my sisters makeup in about an hour and a half. She took her time and it reflected in how it came out! We were in love, our makeup lasted all night through a lot of dancing. Would recommend to anyone in the area looking for an experienced, professional makeup artist!!

Shaynna is a very talented makeup artist as well as a genuinely nice person. We have worked together on many photo shoots and she is so fun to be around. She is easy going and very sweet. She can create any type of look from natural, to bridal, glamour, editorial, fantasy, etc. Besides working along side her I had her do my makeup for a wedding I was attending, I showed her a picture of inspiration and she nailed it. I really felt beautiful!

I hired Gia Kandalaft to do the makeup for my bridal party and I and let me tell you it was the best decision I have made for my wedding. She really took the time to listen to what I envisioned my makeup to look like for my wedding and was more than patient with me until I found the look I wanted. She made me feel at ease and took her time. This was the best experience I've had makeup wise and would do it all again. At least I know who to call next time I need my makeup done professionally, family portraits maybe :)

Mercedes did the makeup for my sister's wedding (both her and bridal party) I knew hands down that I had to use her as well. She is an uber professional, makes sure she nails the look you want and is so sweet. I loved how my makeup came out for my wedding and she even gave me a lovely card with the matching gloss and lipstick so I could re-apply throughout the night. I highly recommend her. Professional and fabulous :)

We were pleased that I, along with my son's fiancé and maid of honor were able to have a pre-trial makeup done by Melissa. She is very knowledgeable about the art of makeup. She was punctual, courteous and professional. It was the first time we had ever done this and the wedding is in a couple of months. Melissa came to our home and we were all quite happy with the results. The pre-trial was for 3 of us; it took about 3 hours, and she spent a lot of attention on each client, to be sure the style and colors fit each person.

I had a wonderful experience with Andrea and Kinga at my wedding! Andrea was simply a pleasure to communicate with before the wedding. When my previously booked makeup artist cancelled right before we were supposed to do a trial Andre was able to schedule a last mist trial. Throughout my entire wedding morning Andrea and Kinga were great, there were lots of women getting hair and makeup done and they handled everyone with humor a calming nature and amazing talent. I LOVED my hair and makeup, it was beautiful while still letting me look like me. Overall I would definitely recommend them both, they really made my day special.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

      • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
      • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
      • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
      • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
      • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
      • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
      • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

      • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
      • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
      • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
      • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
      • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
