Steve has been helping us with some long-needed home repair work. He has re-screened our porch, replaced our corner boards on the home, cleaned out our gutters (up three stories in the back, and then hopped across the roof!!!), replaced the downspouts, replaced some clapboards, and is currently replacing sills and window trim on all of our windows. His work has been outstanding, and he is the nicest gentleman, always polite, knowledgable, and helpful with providing cost-saving pointers. I have already been recommending him to others, and am looking forward to having him back to do some interior work for us in the Fall.

Justin installed a new roof on my house. He and his crew stripped two existing layers of shingles, installed a new asphalt shingle roof, installed a new ridge vent and soffit vents. The roof looks great and no more leaks! Justin was very professional and knowledgeable. He answered any questions I had. I would recommend Justin to anybody looking for roofing or exterior renovations!

.RMPaolino Construction was contracted to remodel my unfinished basement and install baseboard heat throughout my house. Mr. Paolino and his team did an outstanding job planning and accomplishing this difficult job. The work was scheduled so that it caused me very little inconvenience and all phases of the job were completed on schedule. All of the work and construction materials were of professional grade, and the overall price tag was more than reasonable. I intend to hire Mr. Paolino to do other work on my property. Because my house is 114 years old, many adjustments and accommodations had to be made in order to accomplish everything I wanted. Nevertheless, Mr. Paolino worked around all of the obstacles and got everything done that I requested. And it looks great. I highly recommend his services. The overall project included the items listed below. 1. Cleared the basement of all junk and debris. 2. Removed the old boiler from the basement and 12 radiators and pipes throughout the house. 3. Removed all of the old steam piping, old excess electrical wires and unused gas lines running through the basement. 4. Removed all artificial walls, ceilings and floors throughout the basement. 5. Installed a brand new modern boiler and enclosed it with walls with sliding doors for access. 6. Installed baseboard heaters throughout the three-story house. 7. Replaced numerous copper water pipes with fiberglass pipes and insulated the copper piping that was not replaced. 8. Replaced seven basement windows with new windows. 9. Restored the worn brick walls of the basement 10. Framed the entire basement and installed insulation. 11. Installed and painted dry wall throughout the basement. 12. The electrical circuit box was replaced and electrical and cable ready outlets were installed all around the walls. The electrical circuit breaker, gas meter and water meter were enclosed in a small room with an access door. 13. A utility area was created on a raised platform where a washer, dryer, and sink were installed. 14. The basement floor was covered with an industrial strength carpet. 15. A drop ceiling with large panels with embedded florescent lights was installed.

I needed some finish work done in my basement: replacing damaged basement window and installing closet doors. Barry did a great job researching different selections for these items, so that I could make the best choice. Then, he installed them very promptly and efficiently. Would definitely hire him again.

We have been using K&S Remodeling for over a year to do various construction and maintenance and have been extremely happy working with them. They did a major repair of ice damage from the winter of 2015, they built a large 3 bay shed, the rebuilt one of our original 1920 outbuildings and then they remodeled the kitchen and bath of our 1870's farm house. These projects all entailed some serious construction/reconstruction. We had to remove an exterior wall, shore up the supports in the basement, and install support beams where we opened up exterior walls. All the work was done diligently with an eye towards perfection at each step of the process. Not only would I recommend them to my friends, I fully intend to use them for more projects.

Contacted Arthur about replacing a tub with a shower system. From the start he was great, suggesting things to do that would save on the budget. He was really good working around supplier issues and making sure I was in the loop the whole way. I ended up having him also replace porch stairs that were past their prime and install a storm door as well. Arthur did a great job with a the projects and I would definitely contact him in the future for other jobs.

Keith stripped 2 layers and installed a new roof for me. He was very prompt with his response. He came out very quickly to price the job, and game me his estimate a day later. No hidden fees or extra money that I needed to give after I excepted his offer. His price includes everything from start to finish. No extra charges for dumping fees or permit fees. Everything included. He was able to fit me in in his tight schedule. All material was kept in a neatly manner when he was done working for the day. All nails where picked up by a magnet that he rolls around the yard. His price was very fair and reasonable. I would highly recommend him.

Mike was GREAT! He was incredibly responsive from our first plan for him to visit my home to see my basement refinishing project. I really liked that he was flexible with thinking through and pricing out options. His pricing was transparent and very reasonable. Most importantly he arrived on time, completed work according to the original timeline and did a really nice job creating an inviting space in my formerly unfinished basement. I will look to use him again for other contracting projects.

We had quite a bit done to our home, starting with the removal and replacement of old rotted out wood, replacing windows and window frames including a large beautiful Bay window, last but not least scraping and prepping the house and painting it. They were very careful and very professional, always on time and letting me know what they would be working on that day and the time they figured it would take. Regis and Sons has a great crew and I enjoyed having them work for us. I would not hesitate to call them again.

Initially, I had John and his crew install vinyl siding and replace some windows and doors. I was so impressed with their craftsmanship and the fact that they kept their work site clean I had them come back to add a dining room addition and kitchen remodel. This work was also was remarkable. They came in under budget and on time. And then I had a 3 season porch and deck installed. A couple years ago I decided to add a carport to an existing garage and didn't hesitate to contact John. With his keen insight, the intial framing was done so that if at a later time I wanted to integrate the carport into a garage stall it would only take a limited amount of resources. The fact that he listened to what I wanted to do and was able to provide me with alternative options made the project even better. He was able to match the new roofline to that of the existing house. My interactions with John have been very positive. I would not and do not hesitate to recommend John to family and friends who are looking for a competent, qualified contractor/builder. You will find him very attentive to your building needs and he will provide you with quality work at a very competitive rate.

Very professional, worked hard, always concerned about noise and cleaning up after each day of insulating our attic with spray foam insulation. As a general contractor Martin was also able to remove 5 attic vents on a high roof (2 were large, motorized vents) and then patch and feather in new architectural shingles before insulating the underside in the attic, that was a big plus to have one person able to complete two very different jobs in terms of price and scheduling. We are hiring him again January 2015 to renovate our basement which will include construction of a high-end spa bathroom since he can do all the work that entails as well as being experienced in glass installation for the new shower. Martin brings a variety of necessary skills and experience to everything we've discussed with him so far, he's also a former structural engineer, making him perfect when hiring a contractor with his breadth of knowledge.

I have used Aroundtown Construction for various projects (replacement windows, siding, repairs to sheds, doors/door lock installations, etc.), and on all occasions, they showed up on time, worked hard and did quality/professional work. They have great old-fashion worth ethic/values, and conducted themselves properly at all times. I would (and will) use them again in a heartbeat.

If I had known how easy this experience would have been, I would have done it years ago. Ted was responsive from Day 1. He installed 12 windows in record time at a reasonable price, and with absolutely no effort on my part. Every home improvement project should be this positive!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
