Mal was very meticulous and professional while at my house. The results are amazing and I will definitely hire him again for future projects. It is incredibly helpful to have someone who knows what they are doing, especially when it comes to wallpapering because it is not an easy job. Thank you Mal and team!

Walter did a terrific job removing 20 year old wallpaper from several rooms in our new home. He is polite, a hard worker, and super clean with his work. Also cleaned our gutters, and painted a high stairwell. Would absolutely recommend Walter and would not hesitate to call him for future work. Thanks!!!

Paul did a superb job wallpapering our stairway last year. He was clean and neat as could be, and the hallway looks very nice - just as we had hoped! I rate him as tops, and will hire him again when needed. Charlotte and Marty Sornborger

Andy is a rare find. He is true professional and craftsman and such a great person to work with. We hired him to replace the wallpaper in our hallway, foyer and stairs as well as paint our kitchen and mud room. The wallpapering project was challenging as we had significant wood trim and detail that he had to work around. Andy masterfully wallpapered around all of the tight spots and made our home look beautiful. As a painter, Andy doesn’t take any short cuts and carefully prepped or kitchen before painting. He even corrected some of the painting mistakes that our previous painters left. His attention to detail and expertise on our project was much appreciated. Working with Andy was a delight. He is extremely responsive, follows up consistently and is honest with his recommendations. Andy has a pleasant and positive can-do personality. He was very polite, patient with our project delays and accomodating toward our changes and additional requests. He came when he said he would and on time despite his challenging commute. He was very reliable, cleaned up his work area each day, and respectful of our home. Andy’s price quotes were also very competitive and accurate which we also appreciate. Overall, we had a wonderful experience working with Andy. He is such a great person and pleasure to work with. We highly recommend him and would definitely hire him again for our next renovation project! Thank you Andy for helping us make our home look great. We really appreciate your dedication and efforts!!

Sue was unbelievable from the estimate phase to the end of the job. She was hired to do some wallpaper removal in our house and not only did her and her assistant do a fast/great job but the tips and tricks she taught my fiancé' and I were priceless. I plan on recommending her to co-workers and also hiring her again if need be.

I found Eric on Thumbtack and he was able to come out that afternoon and give me an estimate and start the very next morning. He was on time and very friendly and his work was excellent and very thorough, including cleanup and wiping down the hardwood floors which was above and beyond for a small painting job. i will definitely hire Eric for any of my future painting needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

  • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
  • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
  • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
  • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
  • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
  • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
  • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
  • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
