The job was working on the exterior of my condominium, adding new board replacement from old rotten ones, priming, and painting all the trimming needed, as well as my garage door, and front door. They did an excellent job for a very reasonable price. I recommend them highly for anyone looking for a good contracting company, there work is very professional, there on time, and they follow up with the customer to make sure everything was taken care of.

Kyle did a great job on my plumbing job. He connected a new faucet and garage disapproval because I got a new countertop. He had to come to my house twice to disconnect and then reconnect the plumbing. He was on time, professional, and pleasant during both visits.

Bob installed a new mount and US flag over my garage removing my old rusted mount. He did this for free and within 5 minutes because he knew it would be quick and easy. I will be hiring him for other major projects around my house. Thank you!

We recently had Todd build an extension from our garage over our patio. Todd researched the materials needed to accomplish what was needed to get this project done. Once he started, along with Bruce, it took them only 6 days to complete. They were here from early morning steadily working until late afternoon each day. Todd was very particular about his work and made sure that it was done with the utmost professionalism. I would highly recommend him for any type of home projects. Job well done!

I needed to have my garage painted and cabinets installed. The guys showed up on time and were very friendly, knowledgable and courteous. Their work was impeccable and they showed genuine concern for perfection. I also had a tile backsplash installed and my driveway pressure cleaned and both also were done perfectly. I will use them again in the future for upcoming projects and my husband and I highly recommend this company. Homeowners in Sanford, Fl.

Mike was the only one to reply to our request and he replied back within an hour (good). We sent him some photos of our snowed-in driveway - he got back to us with a quote (good). We arranged for him to come at noon and he called to let us know he was on his way (good). Arrived on time and proceeded to clear out our entire driveway from the garage door to the street (good). We had some special side areas to be cleared and Mike did them at our request (good). Overall very happy with his work and would highly recommend him.

(Note that this review is being written by Jerry Booth, the person who actually did the hiring on this job): I cannot say enough good things about Bryan Arthur, who owns and operates B.A.'s Drywall Service and Repair. From the outset he was approachable to traveling to see the small project -- and was very straightforward about discussing options that could be considered to handle the repair. It quickly became apparent to me that this was a man who cared greatly about doing the not only best job he possibly could, but also the RIGHT job, even when it meant traveling a couple of towns over to purchase additional material needed to complete the work. While this wasn't what would be described as a "big project", it carried challenges because it required correcting an earlier, very amateurish, repair attempt performed by someone not qualified. One of the best parts of the experience was Bryan's refusal to stay anything other than upbeat throughout the task. His sense of humor and genuine good nature is a part of who he is and he brings it with him on the job. He is also beyond polite and respectful, which made me feel comfortable from the start. I would hire Bryan again in a heartbeat and, in fact, we have already had informal conversations about a future job. Thanks again Bryan. You made a difference.

We hired Ely and Daniel on 2nd Aug for a converting a half bath to a full bath since my grand mother was in town and couldn't climb the stairs. They Estimated the work to be two weeks. We paid half the amount upfront. Fast forward 3 months. During that time i made some changes to the design to which they demanded 500 more to which i agreed. 7th November Work is still not completed and no response from either Ely or Daniel. If you are planning to hire them make sure you put a completion date on the contract. My grand mother will be leaving this month since the shower was not completed on time. I had a new born at my house during that time so i was busy and trusted them to finish it, but ultimately getting tired of hearing BS for 3 months i had to hire another professional.

This couldn't have gone better. Bruno came out and looked at the sites and talked to me about options. He took the time to explain to me anything I was unclear about. Then his helper Matt stayed and tore up our old concrete (about 3x6 area in our garage) and prepared our front steps for new mortar. The following day, they poured the concrete and mortared our steps. The work was very nicely done, and Bruno even came out a few days later when I noticed one of the stones he'd mortared had come loose. I highly recommend this company, and I will use them again.

My husband and I wanted to rehab our home adding a 2 car garage with master bed and bath. We contacted Baystate Group on a recommendation from a friend. After meeting Victor directly and seeing his completed projects we hired him and I must say it was the best decision we ever made. Victor and his team made this typically stressful situation smooth and stress free. The quality of work is top notch and Victor was very professional, helpful and wonderful to work with. Victor understood our vision and executed it and then some all while staying within our budget. I would highly recommend Baystate Group.

Bob “the builder” as my family and I refer to him is my go-to contractor for any work we need done. Bob built our entire 3000 sq ft house 14 years ago and we have had him back several times since for new projects. He is a quality builder, honest, reliable and reasonably priced. When we wanted an extra 2 car garage, we called Bob and he constructed an exterior 2 car garage for us, which turned out beautiful. He worked with us on the size, style and layout and made sure it complimented our main house structure. Years later, when wind storms caused a tree to fall through my garage, I called Bob again to make the repair. He did everything from fixing the soffit, siding and gutters to reshingling the roof. As always, he was professional, responsive and understanding as I worked through the cumbersome insurance company process. Recently, I hired Bob again to build a large elevated composite deck. His workmanship is sound and of high quality, his prices are reasonable and I highly recommend him to others. Bob has been building for a long time and he knows his stuff. He and his crew show up promptly every day (even when it’s 98 degrees out!) and I appreciate that they work hard and make consistent progress until the job is done. He communicates with me regularly to keep me informed on the project. I continue to be happy with Bob’s work and will have him back again when we have another project for him. Thank you Bob for doing great work whenever we need it.

I LOVED working with TruBlue! I was moving back into a house I had owned for 36 years but had worked out of state for the past 20 years. So the house was rented. When I saw the condition of my house (inside and out) and my once lovely yard I cried. I had received a card from TruBlue so I picked up the phone and called James Puopolo. James came to the house on a Saturday. (I don't think the crying had anything to do with it!) We discussed what needed to be done and the timeframe I needed to have certain things completed so I could move back in. In a few days, I received an estimate of the work to be done. It was estimated in phases so if necessary I could do the work in sections as my finances allowed. I felt that the estimate was very reasonable and signed on with a much lighter heart! James not only accommodated me, checked in to ensure me that the job was progressing, but also called me to let me know what was going on as I was still out of state. When the first phase was done, I flew back in to see if in fact it was in a state where my moving in was possible. Everything was perfect. I was delighted and could see that my house was on the way to being mine again. As pleased as I am my interaction with James, I am equally impress with his workers. They were wonderful! The work done was impeccable, done in a timely manner, and I often felt that hey were more of a perfectionist than I. Their work areas were cleaned and their tools put away every day...nothing was left out to cause any inconvenience to me. I trusted them with a key and the second garage door opener. The house is in the last Stage/Phase and will probably get done early in early spring. I know I will miss them when they are gone. The TruBlue team with which I have worked should be rated well above a 10 out of 10! Thank you TruBlue

Victor was eager to help me install a window in our garage. He was communicative and professional. He installed the window and framed it with wood he found in our garage, saving us money. He is kind and hardworking and we will hire him again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
