Kathy breeds the best German shorthair pointer's I've ever seen. I have seen many different dogs throughout the years of Upland game hunting and hers by far the best around in New England. The male that I bought off of her is phenomenal in the field. I have and will continue to reference friends and people to Cady falls!

My wife and I rescued a 1.5 year old German Shepherd mix from a local shelter. We were referred to Sandy by the shelter, and couldn't be happier. This is our first pup, and Sandy has been a huge help. We started with the basics, such as simple commands like sit and stay. Now I can use hand targeting to direct her, command her to lay down on her blanket rather than trot to the door when we have guests. Oh, and walking my dog is now a pleasure, not a chore. 5/5, would recommend Sandy's services to anyone.

I have two dogs a German Shepherd and a husky they are both great dogs just needed help with more training in obedience after just one session both of my dogs are doing amazing and listening even better. Not only does he show you how to work with your dogs but he is a great person and willing to answer any question and he also doesn’t talk down to you or talk you like your stupid which was my experience with other trainers.

Jess has done an exceptional job helping us train our dog, Bruin. He is a 2yo German Shepherd that has anxiety and a ton of energy. We just finished our 6 week, private training lessons and are extremely thrilled at all of his progress and could not have done it without all of her help. We plan to sign up for more training with Jess to take it to the next level. I highly recommend Jess if you are looking for a trainer. She is extremely patient and so knowledgeable about dogs and very helpful.

It's hard to know who to choose when hiring any professional. I have an 8 month old German Shepherd, and after doing much research trainers, I decided to go with ACT K9. I was so impressed from the very beginning! During the evaluation, I met John and Lindsey and 2 of John's dogs. I have never met more trained dogs in my life. John's interaction with them was amazing. A week later we started training my dog, Sasha. After one lesson, she was already learning to heel. We have only had 2 lessons so far, but Sasha is already listening so much better. John and Lindsey really know what they're doing. The training is as much for me as it is for my dog. I'm so happy I chose them!!!

Chelsea trained my shepherd mix, Harley, over the last year since he was 2 months old. Not old did she provide effective training, but she also taught me how to properly interact with my dog so I can continue what's she's taught us in our sessions. Whenever I have a question I'm always able to call or text her and she will be right there to help. Her sense of humor and extensive knowledge of dogs made every session enjoyable, I looked forward to every meeting. My fur baby is so well behaved in the house as well as in public settings :)

Susan has been helping us with our 1-year old German Shepherd. Susan not only walks our dog to provide him his daily exercise, she also trains him while walking. Consistency is crucial in the development of your puppy and Susan has made this possible. After hiring many dog walkers, I can say that Susan is trust-worthy, dependable and my dog LOVES her. I highly recommend Susan as a dog walker.

Noelle is hands down the best dog trainer! We have a fearful German Shepherd that always had a hard time with new situations involving dogs and new people. Every new situation was a struggle for us and we knew she wasn't comfortable either and wanted to better her life and ours. Through the use of obedience and giving our dog Mia a "job" to do we have been working on her fears. It is AMAZING how much she has improved and is an overall happier dog! Mia is always very excited to see Noelle and responds to her so well. Noelle has changed our lives forever and we will always be very thankful and grateful for it.

When I first met Shari, I was having a tough time understanding my dog and working with him. His name is Bruiser. He is my German Shepherd Husky mix. She helped me to under stand my dog in a new perspective. I learned through her methods of training and experience how to have fun and read my dogs body language. I learned to make Training a Positive experience that my pup enjoyed! I was always getting aggravated and frustrated with him, thinking that he just loved to make me mad. What I didn't understand was that it wasn't him that was the problem it was me. I had to learn to follow through and be the leader my pup deserves! With a lot of guidance and hands on work from Shari and dedication/patience from my end, everything paid off. I have a much better relationship with my dog because he knows I am a leader he can trust to make decisions for his safety. He went from not listening and being a guarding dog to becoming one who waits and watches for what I want him to do next and trusting my decisions in stressful situations. What most impressed me was her patience, explaining things I never understood, step by step, and good attitude towards it all. She never gives up on a dog in need and will push her students, even when times get tough, through to see the amazing results in the end. I was 100% satisfied with Shari and her teachings. Her schedule is very flexible. She is always a phone call away if I need to ask her a question on my dog and even when she doesn't pick up the phone, she gets back to me that same day, no matter the hour. I would recommend her to anyone I see having a tough time with their dog. She is the best!

I have been a very active customer of Alpha Dog for 4 years now, we were introduced through a friend when we purchased our 4 month old Female German Shepherd. We have used all services that Alpha Dog provides and have been more then happy with each service (Training, Daycare, Grooming, Food) Kendra (Owner and Trainer) has played an huge role in the proper training and behavior of our dogs (We now own 3). Kendra will tell you from day one that her training style is done in a military manner. She takes her job very seriously in order to product well socialized, well mannered, and well adapted dogs who can handle being out in society. I have seen some reviews on these sites that "complain" about Kendra and the staff of Alpha Dog and their "Military/Black and White" ways. For me and my dogs Military/Black and White is what I want. I want dogs that respect me and respect others, I want my dogs to be safe and controlled while in public, I want others to be able to enjoy my dogs without them being any danger to others. I have recommended Kendra and Alpha Dog to numerous people, but I always say right off the bat that they always SAY IT LIKE IT IS. They in no way sugar coat anything, because they want to be 100% up front and honest with you. What a lot of people don't know about Kendra and Alpha Dog is that this business isn't all they do, they travel to many animal shelters and offer donated time to help rehabilitate shelter dogs. They have seen the worst of the worst, they have seen what owners have caused by lack of proper socializing and training. All these thrown away dogs are what drives these girls to conduct Alpha Dog the way that they do. I have nothing but fantastic things to say about Alpha Dog, if you want a well trained, socialized, and adapted member of your family then Alpha Dog is the place for you. If you would like to have a puppy/dog that is off the wall and out of control, but you do not want to take any advice from a Certified/Award Winning trainer, then perhaps this is not the place for you.

My family highly recommends Michelle and her services! She came over to help us with our german shepherd puppy who nips and jumps on people, but otherwise is a great dog. She worked with our whole family giving us all the tools to correct this behavior and others that we were not even aware of. She was patient, passionate, and so genuinely kind. We have been using the tips that she gave us and our puppy is doing awesome!

I can't say enough good things about Nachwaechter German Shepherds. From the start Lindsay has been so informative and helpful. When it was time to pick a puppy she helped decided which one would best suit our lifestyle and he has been nothing but perfect. Her and John took him for their board and train program and he is so obedient and sweet. They were patient with us on learning all of his commands and followed up often and even took him back to further his training because they wanted him perfect for us. You guys have really been amazing and I can't thank you enough for being so supportive and accommodating to our individual needs. It's apparent your true love for the breed and thank you for all of your kindness and wisdom with my boy.

Bea has excellent knowledge and a great philosophy on positive reinforcement training. I first attended a puppy kindergarten class over 10 years ago with my puppy German Shepherd. I now am enjoying and continuing to learn about dog behavior and communication with my Shiloh Shepherd by private lessons and socialization classes. It has helped reinforce the bond between my dog and myself and honors my dog's intelligence and needs to learn. Bea is fantastic at her art as a dog behaviorist.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
