Introduction: I have eleven years of experience teaching viola, violin, and music theory to students of different ages and proficiency levels. My students have ranged from 7-year-olds to high school students to conservatory students to adult learners. When I teach, I make connections with elements from daily life outside of music to illustrate concepts, sounds, movements, sensations, and feelings. This is because most of what we need to learn about how the body moves when playing an instrument, we can learn from observing our body doing other activities. When teaching viola or violin, I focus on bio-mechanical ease and efficiency to prevent injuries and so that playing is pain-free and pleasurable. As a performer, when I teach music theory, my priority is to make it relevant and meaningful in the context of performance. I make sure to be available to my students outside of the weekly lesson. I am currently a doctoral candidate at The Juilliard School, which means that I finished my coursework, I don’t have to be on campus in New York, and all I have left to get my degree is write and defend my dissertation. That’s why I am able to live in Rhode Island and work on my dissertation remotely. At Juilliard, I served as a viola teaching assistant and as a music theory teaching fellow. My principal viola teachers are Kim Kashkashian and Carol Rodland. I am bilingual in Spanish and English. I am offering online lessons as well as in-person lessons in Providence and Boston.

I am a violist just beginning a Masters in Viola at Juilliard. Sergio was recommended to me by my teacher to take lessons over the summer and get started with the elements that I will be developing over the next two years. Sergio is an excellent viola teacher who has the potential to bring out the best in each student. I am relatively new to the viola and Sergio helped me to develop my own sound which had depth and cleanliness. Sergio is one of the most enthusiastic teachers I've ever had. He truly loves teaching and his energy makes me excited to play in every lesson. If you are looking for a teacher to develop your playing to a professional level I think Sergio is an excellent choice!

Sergio Muñoz Is one of the best viola teachers I’ve ever worked with. He brings techniques from all the greatest pedagogues to each lesson, seamlessly integrating seasoned advice into every aspect of your playing. He fixed a major issue with my sound in just the first lesson and by the third lesson I had entirely new confidence as a player. He is a joy to work with and really great about working through trauma. He is the perfect match for any violist looking to improve their technique while getting to know themselves better in the process.

Sergio always teaches with patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine love of music! I leave lessons feeling both focused and inspired. I appreciate how he is always able to explain new concepts in different and creative ways. He has helped me progress in my playing through his encouragement and he has taught me to practice more efficiently.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I charge $80/hour. This amount can be adjusted proportionally if you want shorter lessons. I charge in monthly installments and you have to pay in advance at the beginning of each month.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I like to offer a free trial lesson so that the prospective student can assess if we are a good fit. In the first few lessons, I’ll ask you to play something that you know and that makes you feel comfortable and confident. From there, I will assess what technical and/or expressive elements we will work on.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Bachelor of Music, New England Conservatory, 2014. Master of Music, Eastman School of Music, 2016. Doctor of Musical Arts, The Juilliard School, 2022.
