They moved my grand piano to a storage unit 120 miles away. The two movers were competent and friendly, although they arrived 30 minutes late. Packing was good, travel was timely, and the delivery was fine, although they forgot the hardware in the truck and and to shove it underneath the bottom of the storage unit door (I left just before they did). The price I paid was 20 percent higher than quoted. I wish all moving companies would do a better job at cost estimation. Overall a very good experience.

Eduardo Hopp - the owner of H-Movers - was very professional and accommodating. He gave me the best deal from all other moving companies, and helped me on a very short notice (one week only). Eduardo and his associate Henry, show up on time, work fast, yet they are very careful -- none of my personal belongings (flat screen TV, computers, expensive wine glasses) were damaged or broken. I will definitely recommend H-Movers to all of my acquaintances, and use them again when I move next time!

these guys were awesome, NO ONE complained about how much stuff I have. They did all the disassembly and reassembly. I would recommend them highly. I have had several different moving companies and there was always a problem. Moving is stressful and they were great!!

There was a minor hiccup on scheduling, but Spartan sorted it out, and the movers did a great job. The only improvement I'd suggest is that the movers should bring and use floor runners to protect the floors, as the moving companies I dealt with in the past did.

We hired Gleb and his team for our move and could not have been happier. The job was bigger and more complex than either of us expected nor planned for and Gleb was with us every step of the way (pun intended). He was the most responsive and proactive of all the quotes we received from both within the Thumbtack site and from the “big guys” like Allied, Mayflower etc. Gleb was not the cheapest nor the most expensive. He charged a fair price and wanted to see the house not once, but a second time after we loaded up a Pod. We really appreciate that attention to detail. In addition we like to use local small businesses whenever possible. And as a young hardworking entrepreneur, Gleb fit that bill nicely. He and his team were very hardworking and worked with smiles, comraderie and efficiency during the coldest weather we have seen in a long time. Though, we do not anticipate ever moving again, I would most definitely use them if needed and recommend them if you want quality and value.

I hired Top Concierge for a move that I did on June 2, 2017, and I was very happy with their service. I had originally planned on a May 27th move, but due to a last minute work schedule change, I had to re-schedule my move to June 2nd, which they happily re-scheduled for me. On the day of the move, the two gentlemen that came were prompt, friendly, and took great care with my belongings. I would HIGHLY recommend this company for moving services.

Let me start by saying that I don't usually write reviews. The communication with them since the moment I posted the add was great. They offered a personalized rate according to our needs (instead of sending an automatic message like the rest of the moving companies did). They were polite and understanding at all times. Even though I let them know at last minute about our availability, they managed to squeeze us between jobs within two hours from our short notice. The two movers got here on time and were friendly, fast and yet careful with the handling. We're very satisfied with the service overall and won't hesitate to contact them again for another quote for any future moves.

I was very happy with the work done by John. I have a two car garage that was stuffed with all kinds of household items from large to small: mattresses, a china cabinet, old rugs, pieces of lumber, camping gear, chairs, bed frames, magazines, an old toilet... He cleaned it all out with his helper and it looks great now! Getting the estimate went smoothly. He responded to my Thumbtack project very quickly. I made an appointment for him to come out to my house to size it up in person. A picture doesn't really give a good idea of size because it makes everything look smaller. Then he gave me his estimate, I got a couple of other estimates, and I made an appointment for the clean out with John in a couple of days. I would definitely do business with him again.

D&D came over and hauled a bunch of junk from our backyard and shed, large wooden doors, some old stuff from the basement, etc... they were way cheaper then the corporate junk removal company's, they did a good job, good price, they were on time. they got here and got the job done and were on their way. I will differently call them again and refer them F&F.

We were moving from out of state to Rhode Island and I found K.J. Junk and Hauling here. Tony responded right away, was professional and prompt. It was a challenge to wrangle movers to unload a POD while I was still out of state and Tony just simply got the job done right which I really appreciate. Would def hire them again!

I used this moving company 4 times in a period of 6 months so, that, alone, is a pretty strong recommendation. I moved out of 4,000 sq foot house into a rental home and then moved into a new home I purchased. That's a lot of moving a ton of stuff around. I had the same three-man team each time. The nicest, hardest-working guys you will ever meet. On-time, Efficient, careful and industrious! Great problem-solvers when it came to getting big things through doors that were small. I hope not to move again for a long, long time, but I would hire them again in an instant!

Bobby Ambrosino and his crew supported our move from start to finish with care and attention to our needs. And Murray’s Moving did this while providing the lowest quote by, in some cases, HALF the cost! Thank you, Bobby, for sending wonderful packers and unloaded and thank you, Arthur, for taking such great care of our belongings on that long haul from Boston!!! Susan Conley Tampa, FL

I had just moved across the country from a small one bedroom apartment to a large 3 bedroom home. At my apartment, I had very little room for the storage of my craft supplies, let alone functional access to the tools I needed. I was now faced with an abundance of room and actual space for a craft room. I was feeling overwhelmed with the daunting task of how to utilize this new space. Organization has never been a strong suit, so in steps Katy Annulli! Katy to the rescue! Within one short afternoon, she had repurposed an entertainment center as functional storage for my craft tools and supplies. There was a drawer for paper supplies, drawers for knitting materials, and she utilized shelving for bead storage. Each compartment had easy access to the tools needed to complete a given craft. It was such a wonderful experience and I couldn't have asked for more! She understood which types of materials needed to be near what tools, so that everything was able to flow. She really took to the time to understand what i needed and it made all the difference. I love spending days in my craft room and I owe it all to Katy's organizing expertise!

Bart was incredible! He came out to install a small gallery for our church on very short notice and worked within the specific time frame I needed. His work is professional and he completed the project exactly as desired. Bart is wonderful to work with and we will certainly be contracting with him in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
