Cathy came in a timely matter. She did an excellent job with my dog. The dog was the first time she had a private groomer. Cathy kept my dog quiet by just talking and the dog settled down. I have already signed up for another visit. Very pleased Maureen Riley

Peter has been helping train my very domineering rescue pup. He has been nothing short of amazing!!! He is patient and kind and takes his time with each session. Our dog is stubborn and aggressive towards men, week by week I have been seeing changes in our dogs behavior. I am surprised at how quickly he picks things up all in great part to Peter. I look forward to the changes that we will see in appointments to come. I would 100% recommended Peter if you are in need of a dog trainer.

Courtney is a super dog trainer. Her skills in training were quite evident on her first visit with us. She is a good listener to all the problems and then she explains where to begin to ultimately have a positive outcome when all the training is complete. Be prepared to do some homework but you won't be disappointed with the results.

I adopted my 2 year old dog Kayla only 3 months ago and Mike, along with help from his 2 wonderful dogs, has helped us reach several milestones: teaching her to get in the car, introducing her to the dog park experience, learning to walk on the leash, and most importantly, building up my confidence so I can help Kayla build up hers. I highly recommend his services.

John is an incredible, high caliber, high efficacy trainer. This was our first time working with a professional dog trainer 1:1. We saw immediate results from the very 1st session through to the end. We were amazed by John's depth of knowledge. The tips he imparted were invaluable. John began with an overview by explaining his mythology, which was great - it provided a backdrop for how we should communicate with the dog and made absolute, perfect sense (clear one-word commands). He proceeded with the very basics as to what proper leash to use paired with recommended collar to helping us learn to train with the wireless collar. Despite having dogs before, we learned for the first time about marking behavior (correctly) for maximum impact and quick canine learning and more. We had a tricky (and not ideal) situation where we had a week to spend with the dog for training. None the less, John was willing to work with us and was flexible. He calibrated our expectations and I have to say he far exceeded what everyone hoped to accomplish with this stubborn, 3 year old Shiloh Shepard. It is clear he has a real love of dogs and wanted to help for the benefit of the dog and thus deviated a bit from his usual prescribed training program. It was a great learning experience for the humans and the canine. We're practicing and implementing the recommendations. We've already recommended John to another family. I would definitely hire John again without hesitation. Thank you, John.

Jess has done an exceptional job helping us train our dog, Bruin. He is a 2yo German Shepherd that has anxiety and a ton of energy. We just finished our 6 week, private training lessons and are extremely thrilled at all of his progress and could not have done it without all of her help. We plan to sign up for more training with Jess to take it to the next level. I highly recommend Jess if you are looking for a trainer. She is extremely patient and so knowledgeable about dogs and very helpful.

Elaine is a great dog trainer! She really understands dogs' behavior and how to deal with them. She did an excellent job showing us how to deal with him and gave us so much great general info on raising a dog, which we really need as first time dog owners.

No bones about it. Chelsea is the pack leader. She trains dogs without treats & without the use of E-collares. I was blown away when on our second lesson she came into my house of 5 dogs & within 10 minutes all my bone heads were sitting down together QUIETLY and looking up at us. I would have never thought it possible never-ending in just 10 minutes. Then she proceeded to bring her service dog into my house without my dogs ever meeting him. They did not make a peep & sat to meet him. It was like the Twilight Zone. This can't be my dogs!@#? As dog parents, we tent to let a lot slip. We are not in control. We are not being the "PACK LEADER " This is hard for us but it is also confusing for our dog's. They have to know who is the boss. Chelsea will teach you that. Just remember, she can teach you the way, but you must become the "PACK LEADER " she can not do it for you. She will always be by your side but it is up to you to guide your dog down that path. Chelsea is the only person I would trust to do that with me.

Michelle is absolutely terrific at what she does. My husband and I were in our late 50's when we got a puppy and thought we are crazy so we hired Michelle to work with us at our home. It was the best experience. My dog Bailee is the most well behaved dog. I can take her anywhere with me, to anyone's house and she is extremely well behaved. I feel that we owe all of this to Michelle. I would never give a second thought in recommending Michelle. She was a fantastic dog trainer and you can tell that she loves doing what she does.

Blake was a great trainer in helping me with my dog who had crate anxiety. When I got my dog he couldn't even stay in the crate for an hour without hurting himself, Blake was caring and helped train him to where he can stay in the crate for full work days no problem. She also cared enough to teach him obedience and helped my dog become confident in being away from me. Being trained by her was the best thing that could have happened for my dog.

I worked closely with Nicholas for life coaching for over a year now and I couldn't be happier. He is a phenomenal speaker and wonderful mentor who has an innate ability to track your negative thoughts and emotions and turn your mental state around to a more positive one. Because of him, I am now pursuing full recovery with my eating disorder, have now fully embraced my hearing disability, and am now helping other women learn to love themselves and recognize their worth. I also recently hired Nicholas as my personal service dog trainer (talk about a multi-faceted individual!), and he has quickly established a wonderful, respectable, and loving relationship with my dog. Nicholas exhibits patience, professionalism, and quality in his work. Don't miss out on working with this amazing individual!

Katy was so sweet to our new puppy Rylie. Even though we are not new puppy owners, it was so helpful to really understand how to control their behaviors from a young age. She was very patient when sharing information on proper techniques to practice on a daily basis. I would highly recommend a few of the trainings to be one on one so you can ask questions and she can see your dogs training opportunities for future training sessions.

If you are looking to improve on your ability to effectively communicate with your dog to strengthen your bond and improve his/her manners both on and off leash, I would highly recommend Eye-to-Eye Dog Training!

Heidi is an excellent trainer. She not only clearly demonstrates what to do but explains why you are doing it that way. In just a couple of sessions my dogs are doing things I thought were impossible and my dogs have had 8 years of bad habits to correct.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
