J Oliveira Design Build is one of the best I have ever worked with. I hired them to paint most a condo that I bought, and they did such an amazing job. Fernando is punctual, kind, affordable, and most importantly, a talented and meticulous painter. The condo looks flawless. Fernando went above and beyond to make sure that everything looked perfect and even installed light fixtures and a bathroom cabinet. He also cleaned the condo as well and did a spectacular job. The condo looks fantastic and if I ever need painting or handyman work completed again, he is the only person I will call. I highly recommend J Oliveira Design Build to anybody looking for their home or business to be painted and/or cleaned.

Lina did a great job offering full service solutions for our kitchen and dining room remodeling. At the 2nd meeting she had prepared detailed, professionally produced schematics and diagrams showing how the rooms would look. She also provided excellent brochures for fixtures, flooring, and lighting. My wife and I were thrilled with the outcome and would highly recommend Lina for any interior home projects requiring the services of a design architect.

Pamela helped pick out new wall colors for my new house. She was very professional and listened to my likes/ideas up front. Then, she did an inhome consultation with color swabs and helped ensure all colors would flow well throughout the house. The painters started work last week and I can't wait to see how it all looks! I enjoyed working with Pamela and would recommend her for anyone looking for color advice as well as layout/decoration.

Kim helped me design our open family room/dining room/eat in kitchen and paint colors for the entire first floor of our 1960's home during renovations. She provided me with multiple different layouts for furniture placement and options for keeping existing furniture, new colors for paint for the newly open floor plan, as well as electrical placement, and suggestions to improve the overall use of the space. She was very mindful to stay in budget, and her consultations were incredibly helpful to figure out exactly how to best use the new space with our 4 young children. I definitely recommend Brick + Beam for design and color planning.

We asked Sarah to come to our place of business and provide design for a very historic building. Sarah was professional, resourceful and was able to guide us with choices that resulted in a beautiful and grand entrance to our foyer and window treatments in our library and large tv room that were both functional, long-wearing and eye-catching. Sarah was able to connect us with vendors that worked within our budget and was able to communicate our needs with these vendors to get us the end result we desired. Working with the Lovely Locale (Sarah) was just that, LOVELY.

I have to say, I have always desperately wanted to work with a designer but assumed that it was out of my budget. Then I found Christina. I learned very quickly that she was receptive to making any budget work. Not only did she work one room, she actually evolved three rooms in my house with the purchase of only a few items. What struck me the most was her creativity. She opened my eyes to seeing the space so differently. She gave me options moving forward, she suggested flow into other rooms, she grabbed items from here and pieces from there and put together a space that was completely revitalized! I had no idea that a few small changes could refresh the entire feeling of a house! If you’re looking for consistency, if you’re looking for reliability - more importantly, if you are looking for upscale creativity, Christina is who you’ve been needing in your life and you didn’t even know it!! Make this call. You won’t regret it.

Jon was incredibly helpful, professional and skilled through out the two projects I needed done. In both the bathroom and kitchen remodel we needed to work together to lay out and design exactly what my wife and I wanted. He made great suggestions that really made all the difference. We are thrilled with the quality of the finished product! More, we are soo appreciative of his management of the projects. We've heard horor stories about projects gone wrong from friends who had done these kind of disruptive projects ... our experience was the extreme opposit! We couldnt have been more pleased with Jon's follow through at every stage!! I wouldnt hesitate to highly recommend Jon and the Top of the Ladder team to any friends, family or anyone !!

In 2006 & 07 Hal & I were partners on several projects in resort areas of Maine. Hal designed and I managed construction of 3 houses and 6 condos. The spaces are amazing and really project you outside and the cost cutting details Hal introduced were great for the bottom line. Our timing could have been better in bringing them all to market in 2008. Hal's architectural vision is right up my alley and his skills and knowledge can only come from many years of experience. ~ Doug @ Zoë Design

I enjoyed meeting and working with Lauren. She had great color ideas for the rooms I am doing work in. She did say she would send me the colors she picked via email sine she did not write them down. I'm still waiting for them. All went very well.

My experience with Schickel Interiors was absolutely amazing. This was my first time working with a professional and I really needed help :). I contacted the team at Schickel to help with my living room and bedroom in my new apartment. The response almost instant when I first contacted them! Hannah did a great job of asking me questions and showing me sample, giving me the options I needed to make sure the rooms fit to my personality and my liking. We made changes and adjustments throughout the process and Hannah was always punctual and respectful - the team is really easy to communicate with. Another note; I had a pretty small timeline to work with and the team really pushed to make my dream a reality in such a small amount of time. I never thought I'd say this but...I can't wait to move again so that Schickel Interiors can design and implement my new space :)

    About

I am a firm believer that all design spaces should be a reflection of your personality. So, when I design your space it's all about how your space instills confidence while still portraying who you are: A minimalist that loves to curate art, a free spirit boho eclectic, a fun loving meets cozy because you love everything soft, or a traditionalist that appreciates cultures from all over the world. Whomever you are, I got the goods for you! I enjoy bringing a clients space into life in which they have always dreamt about. I also enjoy bringing solutions to my clients' home that they didn't even realize they needed help with...My job is to be a solution first, then be creative. Time is money, and my goal is to make every investment worth your time. Leave the effort to me!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
