Introduction: Ask me about video courses, group classes and subscription pricing! Let’s get you playing the music you've been hearing in your head. Each week, you'll get a personalized practice guide tailored to your goals. My teaching style is as slow as you need, as fast as you can go. Technique should always serve music, so we'll focus on creating art and telling the story that you want to tell. I'll work with you to create a personalized study plan that is engaging, positive, and progress-oriented. Lessons are open to anyone, even if you don’t have a cello yet! I have worked for over ten years with everyone from beginning students learning the basics of holding the bow to advanced players & colleagues looking for a discerning ear. I generally recommend 45 minutes for beginners, but there's no time limit. I love to dive into details and can work as long as you can! As a thank-you for coming on board, you'll receive the 70-page Cello Handbook recently published as part of the online cello series "Hello Cello." Congratulations on taking an amazing first step towards learning cello, and I can't wait to meet you in our first lesson!

Cello Lessons

Claire is an amazing cello teacher, and super talented! Our lessons together have been so helpful for me (as well as full of entertainment - she has an awesome personality). She makes cello lessons relatable and interesting, without making you feel as though you have to be rigid and perfect with every note. I've learned so much from my lessons with Claire, in a short amount of time. Highly recommend her!

Thank you so much for your kind words Anisha. It's very hard not to have fun working with you! I can't wait to dive into more cello techniques and see how you apply them to your compositions.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Rates: $115 for 45 minutes $150 for an hour

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Here's a run-down of your first cello lesson: First, we'll talk through your goals on the instrument, and find out what inspires you about playing the cello. We'll also talk about anything that might have stopped you in the past. Next, the most important element of a great sound: positioning and set up. We'll zoom in on body, arm, and hand positions with adjustments and exercises to help strengthen the unusual *cough*andextremelylazy*cough*it'syourpinky*cough* muscles involved in cello playing. Then we'll work on developing your sound with open strings, learning various bow strokes along the way. We'll keep things interesting by spending a few minutes on technical exercises for skills like vibrato, shifting, and ear training. At the close of each lesson, I'll make sure you take a step towards your goals. If you want to write a piece for the cello, I might help you write down the large form of the musical story. If you want to play "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi, we might learn the intro guitar baseline by ear. If you're obsessed with the Bach cello suite in G major (I totally get it), we could learn a measure or two of that! All along the way, we'll talk through exercises and practice methods that are simple and effective. I'm like a private detective for whatever's stopping you from being amazing at the cello! I'll provide plenty of outside resources to help you learn, and tailor my teaching style to your preferences and needs. At the end, you should be inspired to play and empowered with clear steps towards your goals. I'm passionate about teaching and I love to have fun at the same time, so you might want to buckle up for some dad jokes as well!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am a professional cellist with over 20 years of experience. I currently perform with the Sarasota Orchestra and Charleston Symphony. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in Psychology, and my Master of Music in Cello performance from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music.
