Here's a run-down of your first cello lesson: First, we'll talk through your goals on the instrument, and find out what inspires you about playing the cello. We'll also talk about anything that might have stopped you in the past. Next, the most important element of a great sound: positioning and set up. We'll zoom in on body, arm, and hand positions with adjustments and exercises to help strengthen the unusual *cough*andextremelylazy*cough*it'syourpinky*cough* muscles involved in cello playing. Then we'll work on developing your sound with open strings, learning various bow strokes along the way. We'll keep things interesting by spending a few minutes on technical exercises for skills like vibrato, shifting, and ear training. At the close of each lesson, I'll make sure you take a step towards your goals. If you want to write a piece for the cello, I might help you write down the large form of the musical story. If you want to play "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi, we might learn the intro guitar baseline by ear. If you're obsessed with the Bach cello suite in G major (I totally get it), we could learn a measure or two of that! All along the way, we'll talk through exercises and practice methods that are simple and effective. I'm like a private detective for whatever's stopping you from being amazing at the cello! I'll provide plenty of outside resources to help you learn, and tailor my teaching style to your preferences and needs. At the end, you should be inspired to play and empowered with clear steps towards your goals. I'm passionate about teaching and I love to have fun at the same time, so you might want to buckle up for some dad jokes as well!
