Michael and his team were professional from start to finish. They showed up when they said they would, worked diligently, had a great attitude. Michael went above and beyond to make sure I was happy and was extremely communicative throughout the entire process. Beyond drywall and paint, Michael and his team saved me from having to hire a GC and were able to framed out my closets and doors, too. All in all, I am very happy with the work that Michael did and think his prices are very fair. I would highly recommend him. Have a look at the before and after pictures of my garage / office transformation below and see for yourself.

Josh and Kevin first replaced a post on my front porch for me. They did such a wonderful job that I hired them to build a loft in my garage for storage. I can't express enough how great of a job they did. It looks and works amazingly. Plus they always kept me up to date and started and finished the job as promised. I highly recommend these guys

Alex isthe man you want to hire! He came when he said he would and is very professional and courteous. He was able to make a minor adjustment on a garage door opener and now it works and didn’t charge for it? Who does that?? He had just come for an estimate and it was late and he actually ended up doing a repair that took a couple of hours. It looks great and I would not hesitate in using him in the future for anything else. We will be getting countertops installed and using Alex.

Our experience working with J.R. and Luis at Charleston Premier Workz was a good one. The photos that J.R. showed us of a roof that they had just finished was exactly what we wanted. It made the inside of our storage building look large and roomy. Luis did a wonderful job...he made all the rafters piece by piece, (no long wait time on roof trusses to come from the factory). They finished sooner than we expected and we are more pleased than we expected.

Adam did an excellent job painting the interior and garage of our new home. He was prompt, completed the job within the time frame he initially gave us, was very reasonable on cost, and was polite and professional. He did a fabulous job and our interior paint looks amazing. We will definitely use him again and would recommend him.

I trust Kirk because he is about as straightforward and honest as any one I've encountered in the construction/remodeling/home maintenance business. I know that I won't have to worry about being taken advantage of because of my lack of knowledge and my limited availability to be around while the work is being done. He has done a lot of building/remodeling in my neighborhood and I've never heard anyone say anything negative about him or his work.

Brian has performed work on three separate occasions on our home near London, Ohio. One garage addition, one complete bathroom remodel and one cedar wood siding repair. All three were completed on budget and within an acceptable time frame. Quality was always very good and his attitude and professionalism is great.

Marquis Construction handled a major refresh for us, soup to nuts: sanding, staining and polyurethaning every floor in the house, reglazing windows, replacing shutters, painting every interior surface, re-wiring of fans and lights, and remodeling a bathroom and a kitchen. They removed and replaced the old washer and dryer and did some custom carpentry to get the new ones to fit in the existing space. Steve Gyger and his crew were prompt, professional and showed up as promised. We found the price to be quite reasonable for the quality work that was delivered. Steve has a "can do" attitude about every obstacle he ran into. As in all construction work, there were some surprises along the way. But Steve did not put in for one change order during the whole process. The price he bid is what he stuck with. We were so impressed with his efforts we immediately engaged him to build an outbuilding that was designed as a mini-version of the house and was to serve as a motorcycle garage and a tool/garden shed. Marquis Construction took our drawing, got it approved by the BAR and produced an outbuilding that exceeded our wildest expectations. It is really quite spectacular and the price was very reasonable. Steve Gyger, owner and head honcho, is a stickler for quality work and will accept nothing less from his subs. I recommend him to you without reservation.

We asked Ryan to bid on a room to be painted and was pleased with his price. We were also pleased with the work he performed. While he was doing the paint job we decided to replace a bedroom and dining room windows. His price was again fair and he performed the work quickly and with high quality. Highly recommended.

I called the Fixologist simply because I do not have the time to get things done. My wife is constantly nagging me to work on projects around the house and I simply can't find the time to get them done. I called and spoke with Hailee she was kind and wrote a detailed list of all the projects we needed. She called me back about 30 minutes later with an estimate worth it for both of us! The team came out two days later. I know longer have a leaking bathroom sink, I have a new porch light, garage door lock replaced, two holes are patched up, and sensor light was installed outside! They were lightening face and it looks great! Thanks for saving me from my wife guys! I'll be calling again soon!

I've had Adir's help with a few jobs around my house. He takes pride in his work which really does make a difference as far as quality. He's changed my locks, fixed my garage monitor, and some slight construction work (building a stack of shelves for organizational purposes). He's become my go-to person, when I'm unable to do it or find someone else who can.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

          What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

          • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
          • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
          • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
          • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
