I met with 7 different local contractors to remodel our home in Charleston and no one even came close. These guys work well together and are EXTREMELY meticulous. Not only did they give me the best quote, they started the project the very next day! I HIGHLY recommend this crew without any reservation. These guys are passionate about what they do and it translates directly into the quality of their work.

Brentt and his team did an exceptional job on our new deck. My wife and I could not be more pleased with every aspect of the project. Brentt made it a point to discuss with us every detail through the process and handled the deck like it was his own. By far the best contractor we have ever worked with and I would highly recommend them.

Mike and his team were fantastic. Very up front about the process and worked tirelessly to get the job done. Would recommend to anyone to use HTHC! Mike even went the extra mile to redo some of the work our previous drywall contractor unsuccessfuly completed. Will be using again for any drywall and painting work down the road.

Our heat pump died on a Saturday morning. I filed a service call and a claim with Select Home Warranty. The contractor Select had sent to repair the unit "condemned" the old machine and hoped Select might replace it for us (as many home warranty policies promise). Select Home Warranty denied to pay a penny - nothing for repair, and certainly nothing for replacement. Realizing all would have to come out of my wallet, I looked at Thumbtack for a list of the most popular HVAC contractors in Charleston, and even a few I had never heard of. I then called to set up appointments for six different representatives to come to our home and give us an estimate. I told each representative that I was looking for the proper sized unit and a great warranty for the best price, so I needed their lowest estimate up front. And, since we are caring for my 87 year-old mother with Alzheimer's, I would need the work done by the following Tuesday...colder weather was coming. Laurie at EK Services offered us the lowest quote (over the phone!), then scheduled the owner of the company, Eddie, to come out and meet with us. Eddie matched all services, equipment, and warranties promised by his competitors, and at a much lower price. The following Monday Eddie and his crew arrived, on time as promised, and they began taking our old heat pump out. A few hours later we were up and running with a much more efficient, brand new Goodman unit. The EK Service crew was fast, very friendly, professional, and, best of all, considerate of my financial worries. Yes, I would refer EK Services to my closest family, friends...even everyone up and down my street. J. Mong West Ashley

First of all this was a big project, it is a 24x14ft screened in porch and another 24x10ft of decking. The whole construction is connected to our house. We had several contractors looking at the job and went through multiple architectural alternatives. Josh contacted me very quickly after my post and we went through a transparent and fair design discussion and negotiation phase. I liked the transparency where Josh showed me a list of all materials (broken down to the nuts and bolts) and labor. We decided to work with Josh and Kevin and do not regret it! Obviously this was a huge project for us and for them and we could not cover all items upfront, so it took longer than we originally anticipated; But we also asked for changes during the project which caused additional delays. For us it was more important to have a result we really like, than to be picky about the timeline. Kevin has excellent carpentry skills and the final result is sturdy and and visually outstanding. We have only received compliments from visitors and passed on their contact details to our friends. I feel we have built up a good relationship with Kevin and Josh and I am looking forward to the next job and the next beer and conversation with "Schreinermeister Kevin" :) Enjoy the pictures of the project...

If we could give 6 stars we would!!! Julian genuinely did the job of three “local highly recommended professionals” in a third of the time and fixed the mess of said “professionals”. Our only negative was that he couldn’t stay longer with us. Word of wisdom (from experience) if the bidis too cheap it’s cheap for a reason Julian charges slightly above norm but as mentioned worth every penny. I will certainly use him from the start of the next project and will use him residential projects also.

After getting several quotes to fix some foundation water damage, and sliding glass door replacement, I chose to go with Anthony. He is very knowledgeable and comprehensively showed me why it was happening. He advised a solution to fix the problem, rather than just replace the damaged materials. My time schedule was stringent, and Anthony delivered as he said. He kept me up to date with the progress while I was out of town and dealt directly with my realtor with required paperwork. It was a great experience dealing with Anthony. I would highly recommend Tri Square Construction for any general contractor projects.

Peter did a great job! He showed up when he said he would, worked hard and got the project done in the time that he promised. I liked that his pricing was simple, unlike some of the other contractors and handymen that we spoke to. He's our guy from now on for any projects that we need done around the house!

It has been a wonderful experience with Bobby McClellan and his team and we recommend him highly. There has been a complicated water leak into our living room. We ask for help from five contractors hoping to give us suggestions to what should be done. Two never got back to us and two others recommended the same solution but it didn't make sense to us. Bobby McClellan came up with a brilliant but simple idea which not only fixed our problem but added a great look to our room. Bobby and his team where professional, caring and definitely perfectionists. They came at the same time daily, worked continuously put up protective plastic to safeguard wall hangings and furniture and left every evening having the areas clean and orderly.. Not only did they do a fabulous job on our living room they fixed my kitchen sink dis-function which a previous plumber was incapable of mending.

Avi does beautiful work! He did exactly what he said he was going to do in the time he said he would do it at the price he quoted. I know we as consumers SHOULD expect nothing less; however, I have recently had a string of bad experiences with contractors, and Avi was a welcome change. Oh, and did I mention he's just an all around nice guy? Bonus! I'm looking forward to working with Avi on my next project!

I hired Mike to come and do a kitchen remodel after a previous contractor ran off with my money! Not only was he respectful of my previous upset, he completed the job quickly and efficiently with the help of a few guys that worked very hard to complete my kitchen prior to my anniversary! I highly recommend him for any job, big or small and will be hiring him again in the near future to build an addition as birthday gift to my wife!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
