I recently hired T & C cleaning services for my mother's house while she was away. This house needed a major clean, dust everywhere , ceiling fans, windows, bathrooms and floors , basically every surface. Two ladies arrived for this job and immediately took down curtains and began washing them and cleaning the windows. They were a great team working together as one. When I came back a few hours later I was amazed at how beautiful and clean everything was. They did a fantastic job and I would recommend them to anyone !!

Kevin and Liam arrived at my house at the appointed time and replaced a picture window over my master bathtub. They were very careful not to cause any damage in removing and replacing the window, were very professional, and did a great job. They cleaned up after they finished and even cleaned the new window. I would definitely hire them for again.

We used Southern Home Cleaning LLC to do a deep clean of a luxury condo rental between tenants about 1 1/2 weeks ago, and we were amazed at the results. The unit is very high end, but there had been no dusting, cleaning of refrigerator, appliances, window sills, blinds, or screened porch or baseboards in 4 years. The work that Lise-Lotte Newell and her team did was spectacular and we will definitely use them again. They were very professional, on time, concerned with the details that concerned me as to the cleaning, and asked me to check the unit upon completion to be sure that I was satisfied. We could not ask for more! Thanks so much. Beth Davis

I hired David to paint two interior rooms in my home, the living room and master bedroom. My home has crown molding and multiple windows, and I wanted to make sure the job was done by a professional. David did a wonderful job! He was able to paint both rooms in one day, and I'm so happy with the final outcome. His prices are very reasonable, and he was able to work me into his schedule quickly. I will certainly use him again in the future for any painting/construction needs. Thanks so much!

What an amazing experience we had working with Junior! He is incredibly competent. Any idea I had, he could pull up pictures on his phone from similar jobs he had completed. We had him do crown moulding, including a detailed tray ceiling, window trim, install cabinets above the washer/dryer, and next week he is putting in a counter above the washer/dryer.

I recently had all the windows in my house replaced, along with 2 exterior doors. Robert and his crew were amazing. They finished under the estimated time and left the house just as clean as it was when they arrived. Very professional and great quality work. Will definitely return for any further upgrades!

Lowcountry Home Works Our daughter had rented out her North Charleston, SC home for the past 6 years and recently decided to sell it. My wife and I went to North Charleston on January 3, 2016 to arrange for painting and cleaning of the home. Having no knowledge of area painting or home cleaning companies, we used Porch.com and Google to identify 6 painting companies and had their representatives inspect the home and provide estimates on 4 and 5 January. We selected Kenneth Childs (KC) and his company, Lowcountry Home Works. They did not submit the lowest bid, but we were influenced by KC’s attitude and professionalism. He spoke of the details involved and flexibility in working with us. All of our expectations were more than met. Before he started, we decided to expand the work to include painting the ceiling, an increase that he readily met. Lowcountry was meticulous in preparing to paint. All windows were taped, interior doors removed, electric plates either covered or removed, lighting fixtures/fans removed or covered and wood floors covered. The vaulted ceilings on the main floor made this a difficult task. The “popcorned” ceilings were damaged in several areas. KC was able to repair the ceilings so that the repairs blended in perfectly. Painting the ceilings greatly increased the brightness of all of the rooms. KC used only the best grade of Sherwin Williams paint. We used a beige paint on all walls. Though some walls had previously been painted dark, the Sherwin Williams paint covered beautifully. Lowcountry was extremely detailed in “cutting in” around baseboards, and window and door frames. The quality of the work was also noted by the listing real estate agent. KC adapted to our rapidly changing requirements. Several days after Lowcountry started, we decided to install new carpets throughout the upstairs and wanted to install them during the time Lowcountry was still painting. KC immediately adjusted his work plan to complete painting upstairs before carpet installation and to provide unimpeded access to the carpet area during installation. We asked KC if he knew of a cleaning team which could do a final cleaning of the house. To our pleasure, KC said Lowcountry also cleaned homes. This provided us a seamless transition from painting to cleaning and ultimately to listing the house. My wife and I worked adjacent to KC as we refinished cabinets, cleaned appliances and replaced toilets and light fixtures. He recommended a variety of stores where we able to get replacement fixtures at very favorable prices. During our time working with KC we developed a high regard for his character, his managerial skill and his adeptness in supervising the work being done. My wife and I had to return home before some replacement doors arrived and before I had completed the work I had planned to do. We left North Charleston completely confident that the final work would be completed in a timely and professional manner. After leaving, we have had to ask KC to do a number of additional tasks which we had not been able to complete. Lowcountry has enthusiastically done everything we have asked. I strongly endorse Lowcountry Home Works for their professionalism, responsiveness and ability to adapt to circumstances.

Devin was seriously a lifesaver! We had a window leaking in our new house that we had been unsuccessful in fixing with caulk. The day before a hurricane (!) he diagnosed the problem, fixed it, and even discovered a much bigger problem (outside his scope of work, so he wasn't trying to scam us or anything - just pointing it out) that we'll need to address after the storm passes that we would've never thought to have checked. Thanks to him, we had ZERO leaks during the storm and were able to safely evacuate with peace of mind. He communicated consistently and clearly, was professional, and most importantly - did what we needed when we needed.

We asked Ryan to bid on a room to be painted and was pleased with his price. We were also pleased with the work he performed. While he was doing the paint job we decided to replace a bedroom and dining room windows. His price was again fair and he performed the work quickly and with high quality. Highly recommended.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
