I don't know where to begin. Najera's was probably the best company I ever hired to do work on my home. We just downsized and bought a house and it was never updated so we wanted to paint the whole interior, trim, closets, walls, garage etc... and they did an excellent job. Moved furniture, covered it and moved it back, took Tv's off the wall and put them back, everyday when we got home from work it was like they never were here. Took the crew a whole week to complete the work. Also had some carpentry work which was excellent at well. They even pressure washed the outside of my home as part of the package. All at a great price. I highly recommend this company.

Stroman Home Improvements painted my kitchen, entry way from garage, and the garage. Led by Demetrius Stroman, they arrived ontime and ready to begin work. They repaired several holes in my sheetrock installed new exterior lights fixtures. All the work was completed in less than 5 hours. They cleaned up quickly and they left. I will definitely call on Stroman Home Improvements and I will recommend them to my friends.

Kenneth and his team enclosed an existing carport to a closed in garage, along with creating a dryer vent opening. Not only did he respond immediately to my request for a quote, he showed up at the time he stated for the review of what we needed. More than that, he did the job earlier than he had originally anticipated. What is really striking though is the team arrived on the date/time they said they would, performed the work in less than a week, cleaned up (!) after themselves, and did a very thorough job. To top this off, Kenneth called TO FIND OUT IF WE WERE HAPPY WITH THE WORK!! Who does this anymore?! When a couple small items were mentioned, he said no problem and they came the next business day and took care of it. I've been dealing with a firm in a different state that has been a vastly different, in a bad way, experience. Kenneth restored our faith that there are conscientious contractors out there still.

Chris did a fine job. I had used him to paint our baby's room and dealing with many professional painters in the past I expect a certain type quality. He has exceeded the past professional painter that previously had painted the room. (We didn't like the color.) I am very pleased with Chris and will keep him in mind for any projects in the future when it comes to home repair. I own a cleaning business and have already gave one of my customers his number as she was needing work done in her home that we could not do. I felt comfortable leaving my home with my pregnant wife and 10 year old son at home while he was working. Peace of mind is worth A LOT to me! Chris is a skilled honest man just trying to provide for his family like we all are. He has my recommendation as there are less than five companies that I would dare refer any of my customers to.

Mr Kendall cut in a side entry door into my garage and put in a step so I could gain easier access into my side yard. He also repaired a leaky roof on my patio room. Mr Kendall was very reasonably priced, prompt and courteous. I would absolutely have him back to do any future repairs and would highly recommend him!

I had been consulting with Phillip at RR Construction Group about a bathroom remodeling project when Hurricane Matthew hit. I texted Phillip and asked if he could help us with some storm restoration work repairing garage siding and framing and replacing roof shingles and outdoor light all damaged in the storm. Phillip came immediately to look at the damage, offered us an estimate on the spot (a very fair price) and was there with a crew to make the repairs days later. Everything was complete in two days and was absolutely excellent. Our neighbors were impressed with the work they saw going on and have asked us for RR Construction Group contact information for projects they need to have done. We look forward to working with RR Construction Group on more projects in the near future.

I had Mr. Thomas to repair some drywall and retexture my ceiling. Mr. Thomas came out one day to give me an estimate and was able to complete the job the next day. He was on time and made sure he covered things up inside the house to ensure nothing got paint on it. I would have rated home 5 starts however when he did the ceiling in the garage he didn't cover anything up and there was paint everywhere.

We used the services of Remodel Columbia twice in 2014. The first was for a major bathroom/laundry room remodel (literally from the floor up), and re-roofing at one of our rental properties. We used them again to reroof garage at our home. Their estimates were competitive, workmanship top quality, communication response time quick, and problem solving skills and expertise got the jobs competed in a timely manner. We plan to call on them in the future, and highly recommend their services.

This concept is amazing. Natalye literally took care of everything when it came to our project. We built a new driveway that went to a potential 2 car garage/storage area in our backyard. I didn't realize how much work she did until I spoke to my husband. I had no clue so much work went into concrete. That is why we had her help us find the contactors for our garage. A month later and everything is perfect. We are so happy with her guys and the work they did. I would recommend her to anyone.

George is a great contractor. He is dependable and he does great work at a reasonable price. I highly recommend him for all your home needs. He patched drywall, hung shelves, sealed off my chimney, replaced a missing brick in care port and replaced a piece of missing siding on the garage.

Mario and Marion painted the trim on my home, replaced the old wooden shutters and replaced the garage back door. They did an excellent job on the trim, taking care to replace all rotted places they found and the painting and the shutters look great. They also did a good job on the door although the door frame is slightly warped from the house settling. The door still does not close as well as it did when it was a new home but they made it fit much better than the old door. Their pricing was fair and they stayed in budget, they always called if they were going to be late and they finished quickly. These guys are a joy to work with - they are always pleasant and friendly. I definitely recommend them and their work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
