When I placed my project request on Thumbtack, J. Simone Landscaping was the first to respond and Jon came out personally to go over the project with me and give me an estimate. He worked within my budget to come up with the solution that best suited my needs. We agreed on a price and scheduled the work. On the day of the job, Jon and his crew showed up early and went right to work. They did a great job and cleaned up after the job. They did exactly what the said they were going to do and went above and beyond to make sure that I was happy with the job that they had performed. One of the most professional contractors that I have worked with on Thumbtack so far and I have utilized Thumbtack for a lot of projects around my house. I highly recommend J. Simone Landscaping for any of your landscaping needs. They are not a fly-by-night business, so they are not going to be the cheapest quote that you will receive, but they will get the job done right the first time! I have tried cheaper solutions in the past and it always ended up costing me more in the long run. Trust Jon and his team to get your job done and you'll end up saving money down the road!!! Thanks Jon!!!

Wow, I could not be more pleased with this job! Randy is a highly competent craftsman who responded in minutes to my inquiry, told me he would try to work me in at the end of that very same day, and fixed my doors in a very quick and efficient manner. He stayed in contact with me throughout the day and showed up exactly when he said he would. Very reasonable price and worked after hours! I have hired many contractors and handymen since my husband passed away, and had sworn off hiring from the internet after some not-so-great experiences. I am so glad I decided to try again. This was a top job and experience, and I will definitely hire Randy again.

I hired Mago to do another project for me. This time it was to remodel my master bath. 30+ years old, it desperately needed work. I also wanted to make it more age friendly (elderly) and give it more space to move around. He met all my goals. I like that he has input when needed and listens to all your wants and tries to accommodate you when possible, giving suggestions along the way. He was to remove the tub and enclosure, put in a tile shower, tile the floor and the wall, install a new vanity and sink, replace the toilet. He and his team did a fabulous job on the upgrade. I am so happy with my new bathroom! Thank you once again Mago for your wonderfully done work.

I recently hired Eric Nichter to do a wide variety of tasks in my home including door replacement, doorknob/lockset replacement, mailbox post repair, attic fan removal, electrical outlet additions, gutter repair, and toilet replacement. He excelled at all carpentry and building-related tasks, as his company name would indicate. I would give him 5 stars for these tasks, as he came up with creative solutions as problems arose and he did outstanding work in these areas. In his attention to tidiness and in other handyman tasks for which he lacked expertise (such as electrical diagnosis), his work was 3 star. He charged reasonable prices, and he did communicate well and arrived and departed at the times that he committed. Overall, I was very pleased with his work, and I would hire him again.

Just hired Bruce. He will start my deck week of April 10th. He was punctual for our appointment, had great ideal and knowledge. He communicated back to me within a timely manner. His pricing was competitive but not over priced. I had done my research prior to meeting with the 5 contractors. That's right I got 5 bids and then m adequate my decision. I will post my final review with photos at completion of my deck.

I used BKR for a kitchen remodel on a budget. Bill helped me make good choices, and his crew did excellent work! I was also very pleased with how kind and personable they were. I have three little dogs, one of whom is a rescue with stranger issues. They were all so good with my little ones. What I thought would be a stressful situation turned out to be a pleasure.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
