  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

    1. Insurance: Please make sure that the tree service is insured with both Worker's Compensation and General Liability Insurance. Have certificates of their insurance sent to you directly via their insurance company. The certificates should include your name, the effective dates of their policy and the policy limits. Don't accept copies of policies' because some companies make copies of their policy then cancel it. Insurance coverage should cover the work being done. A landscape policy does not usually cover tree work above just a few feet up. 2. License: If you live within the city limits of a local city ask the tree service if they have a license to operate in your city. 3. Debris Removal: Make sure that the tree service hauls off all unwanted debris and isn't planning on stacking the debris on the street. It is illegal for them to leave the debris next to your curb for the municipality to pick up. 4. Referrals: Ask for referrals if they weren't already referred to you and ask for a written agreement before you start describing the scope of the job. 5. Professionalism: Make sure you feel comfortable with the company you are hiring and the manner in which they are going to perform their work. Ask about their work expirience, tree knowledge and training. Ask them to describe their equipment. 6. Yard Damage: Ask the tree company how they will be taking the tree down and removing the debris. If they are dropping the debris rather than lowering the debris with ropes then understand the damage that will occurr to your yard. If they are bringing in large equipment like a skid steer (Bob Cat) to remove the debris understand that many companies will tear up your yard and there isn't a lot you can do about it accept withhold payment which will make them angry. Make sure the company accurately describes the level of yard damage that will occur and agree on the amount of yard damage that you are willing to accept. 7. Payment: Don't make any payment (not even a partial payment) until the tree service you've hired is completely finished with the job and you are satisfied with their work.
