Absolutely. One cannot keep a high standard of work without knowing the latest technological developments. I do lot's of research on my own (learned during my Master's and PhD) and stay current on my Microsoft and CompTIA certifications.

Ask for credentials. Check age and if college educated. It is important that they have many years experience and social skills.
