Alex isthe man you want to hire! He came when he said he would and is very professional and courteous. He was able to make a minor adjustment on a garage door opener and now it works and didn’t charge for it? Who does that?? He had just come for an estimate and it was late and he actually ended up doing a repair that took a couple of hours. It looks great and I would not hesitate in using him in the future for anything else. We will be getting countertops installed and using Alex.

We hired Charleston Premier Workz to install hardwood floor, finish and tile the fireplace and the kitchen in our large condo. JR and his team were fast and efficient. Even when one of his employees got sick, JR took it upon himself to finish tiling and gave us his very best work. His team was very professional and accomidated all the small details that I requested. JR's work exceeded our expectations and our condo looks better than we have ever imagined. We highly recommend hiring Charleston Premier Workz for any job that you have regardless of the size.

I hired Matthew to paint the entire interior of my home, remove carpeted floors, install laminate floors, and build a fence in the backyard. We booked him about a month out and he was very accommodating when my closing date on the house got moved up and gave a very fair price. Matthew has a team of people that he splits up between jobs, so depending on where in the projects he was there would be between one and 8 people working. His team worked fast and when an issue came up with a leaking pipe his team stayed late to try to keep the job on schedule. After the job there were a few items that needed to be touched up and they were more than accommodating coming multiple times to get everything right. I would definitely recommend them.

Brian was very professional in communicating with me. He was prompt with his responses to my questions and prepared a quote the same day we started talking. I had several small jobs that needed completed and Bob was assigned to do the work. We had a bathroom vinyl floor replaced, a tub re-grouted, a manufactured wood floor repaired, and a screened porch re-screened. It was all completed in two days. All of the jobs were expertly completed. The work site was left in spotless condition. Bob was very friendly and kept us informed of everything he was doing each step of the way. He was very considerate of the effect he and his work had on the household and cleaned up all of the debris. I will contact Brian Elliott again when I have a need for any household repair.

Bobby made a design for my kitchen so that I have more space, extra storage solutions, easy to keep clean with 4 boys, and it is a pleasure to use every day! I didn't have to spend hours trying to choose lighting, backsplash, flooring, cabinets, hardware, etc He would present a few options within my budget and I would choose one. Couldn't be easier. It took 3 weeks to complete (as it was supposed to) even with having to do major repair work on my second bath due to an unseen water leak from the tub into the wall between the kitchen and bath. Unexpected repair cost for the adjacent bath was reasonable (and looks a lot nicer now, too!). They were always on time, professional, clean and safe work area, and very detail oriented. Once again, very satisfied!!!! I will definitely use them again when doing more work on my home.

I highered Palmetto Home Remodeling for my Laminate Flooring installation throughout my home. Tigran adviced and recommended to us the best value laminate flooring we can buy for our home which ended up saving us money for a better product then we were going to purchase ourselves. They did the job on time and were very clean. The Laminate Flooring installation came out just beautiful, It was obvious that Tigran is a very experienced installer. We are very satisfied and would recommend and use his services again.

Krista's husband, Dan, installed a floating laminate hardwood floor for me. He did a great job without chipping any of the pieces and very quickly and accurately making all the necessary cuts around doorways and cabinet legs, etc. And he was great to talk too. I'd hire him again!

Lowcountry Home Works Our daughter had rented out her North Charleston, SC home for the past 6 years and recently decided to sell it. My wife and I went to North Charleston on January 3, 2016 to arrange for painting and cleaning of the home. Having no knowledge of area painting or home cleaning companies, we used Porch.com and Google to identify 6 painting companies and had their representatives inspect the home and provide estimates on 4 and 5 January. We selected Kenneth Childs (KC) and his company, Lowcountry Home Works. They did not submit the lowest bid, but we were influenced by KC’s attitude and professionalism. He spoke of the details involved and flexibility in working with us. All of our expectations were more than met. Before he started, we decided to expand the work to include painting the ceiling, an increase that he readily met. Lowcountry was meticulous in preparing to paint. All windows were taped, interior doors removed, electric plates either covered or removed, lighting fixtures/fans removed or covered and wood floors covered. The vaulted ceilings on the main floor made this a difficult task. The “popcorned” ceilings were damaged in several areas. KC was able to repair the ceilings so that the repairs blended in perfectly. Painting the ceilings greatly increased the brightness of all of the rooms. KC used only the best grade of Sherwin Williams paint. We used a beige paint on all walls. Though some walls had previously been painted dark, the Sherwin Williams paint covered beautifully. Lowcountry was extremely detailed in “cutting in” around baseboards, and window and door frames. The quality of the work was also noted by the listing real estate agent. KC adapted to our rapidly changing requirements. Several days after Lowcountry started, we decided to install new carpets throughout the upstairs and wanted to install them during the time Lowcountry was still painting. KC immediately adjusted his work plan to complete painting upstairs before carpet installation and to provide unimpeded access to the carpet area during installation. We asked KC if he knew of a cleaning team which could do a final cleaning of the house. To our pleasure, KC said Lowcountry also cleaned homes. This provided us a seamless transition from painting to cleaning and ultimately to listing the house. My wife and I worked adjacent to KC as we refinished cabinets, cleaned appliances and replaced toilets and light fixtures. He recommended a variety of stores where we able to get replacement fixtures at very favorable prices. During our time working with KC we developed a high regard for his character, his managerial skill and his adeptness in supervising the work being done. My wife and I had to return home before some replacement doors arrived and before I had completed the work I had planned to do. We left North Charleston completely confident that the final work would be completed in a timely and professional manner. After leaving, we have had to ask KC to do a number of additional tasks which we had not been able to complete. Lowcountry has enthusiastically done everything we have asked. I strongly endorse Lowcountry Home Works for their professionalism, responsiveness and ability to adapt to circumstances.

From my personal experience, John Reid is honest, friendly, dependable and produces what he promises. He is a gentleman and so is his son, Jay, who works with him. They removed carpeting from 3 floors of my home and replaced it with tile on the first floor and hardwood flooring on the upper 2 floors. They stained the steps, banister rails, and all woodwork to match the flooring. Prior to that, I had an unfortunate incident. My washing machine on the 2nd floor was not installed properly by others and it was leaking through the kitchen ceiling on the 1st floor. John Reid was recommended by a close friend and he took care of the proper machine hook up and the ceiling repair. The team also removed an existing electric fireplace and installed much needed shelving. If you go with Blue Anchor Builders, I cannot imagine that you would be disappointed.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

        • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
        • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
          • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
        • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
        • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
          • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
        • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
          • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
          • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
          • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
            • Includes removal of the dura rock.
        • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

        • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
          • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
        • 620 square feet of maple floor:
          • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
          • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
            • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
