Provided tons of feedback on my project and gave ideas on how to do some of the more complex parts (e.g. trim out windows in a shower). Final product came out great. Very clear and honest communication. Time and price estimate were exactly as promised, no last minute extra costs or time needed. Would highly recommend.

Jose is wonderful. He was thoughtful and and did a fantastic job. I remodeled a kitchen myself and once it was functioning, the pretty stuff became low priority to fix. He replaced a door and window made the trim match the other windows exactly. He did crown molding and baseboards, installed molding above and below the kitchen cabinets, refaced a fireplace, did trim work outside, finishes the trim on a pocket door, and built wooden boxes over my windows. I highly recommend him.

Ben Hamrick and his team did an outstanding job at our home. They did exterior work (4 sides brick) which included trim, front door, windows, replaced rotten wood on windows, etc, From pressure washing the house, walk and driveway, to the clean up, everything was done very professionally and in a timely manner. The week they were to start, the heat was almost unbearable and Ben thought that would delay things but it all worked out according to schedule. The crew was there by 7:00a.m. and worked consistently to finish. The most impressive thing was Ben and his team's attitude towards the work. Whatever additions were added, he obliged. His contract itemized everything in detail with nothing hidden. His quote won over 5 others. Not so much because of price (although reasonable and within range) but his personality had much to do with him getting the job. Would I recommend Ben Hamrick? Absolutely, without a doubt!

If you're looking for someone to do window repair don't look any further. Clyde came out and looked at what I needed done. He called me within an hour and gave me a very fair estimate. He came when he said he would, got right to work and cleaned up after he was done. He was friendly fast and efficient and best of all affordable. I would highly recommend Clyde for any door or window repairs you have.

Powder Room floor replaced. Jonathan and I met to pick out and purchase the tile and materials needed. He and his crew arrived when he promised and did a professional job. He even fixed a small issue with lighting outside my garage door at no additional charge. Jonathan is easy to work with and genuinely wants to make sure his customer is satisfied.

Michael did a great job installing a ceiling fan on a vaulted ceiling and replacing an old storm door with a new one on the rear of my home. He didn’t leave until he was happy with the job he had done. He went above and beyond to make sure everything was absolutely perfect. Will be hiring him again in the near future for the front doors.

Jeff completed work on two small projects in my home. Cutting out an area where water/moisture build up from the adjacent shower had created mold build up, inspecting the inside of the wall to ensure there wasn't a leak on the interior wall and repairing the area. He also patched up an area where the garage door opener had been pulled out of the wall. Jeff was very responsive from initial quote all the way through completion. I was very pleased with the quality, price, timeliness and overall professionalism. I would highly recommend Jeff to my friends.

They were able to do an install of both the front door and back French doors, with having to re-build the framing around the back door (due to bad work by the folks that installed the old door) in one day. The work looks awesome and they were great to work with the entire time.

Always early, professional, does excellent work. They are there when they say they will be Rates are reasonable. They replaced and repaired my siding, have installed a new entry door and storm door on my back door, removed two regular doors and replaced with bifolds. They will probably be at my house for the next few days doing other things. I will be highly recommending this company to anyone that is looking for work to be done. I will add photos when everything is complete. I could not be happier.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
