I had Grant Wallace and his assistant out to install several light fixtures and troubleshoot and repair a light that wasn't working. They were on time and responsive to emails and calls. They got everything fixed and installed. They cleaned up after themselves and left things neat and clean. We did have to spend a few minutes rethreading the pull chain on the ceiling fan through the light so it hung correctly. All in all, affordable, friendly, and good job.

I hired Charlestowne workshop to replace the crown and floor moulding in my home, and to repair an area of my front porch that had buckling floor joists. They finished the job on time and within my budget, and I couldn't be happier with the results. They are highly professional and apply attention to detail to every step of the project. If I have similar projects to complete in the future I will be contacting them.

I hired Brian a while back to help me on several remodeling projects, involving painting, interior and exterior, carpentry work, and deck repairs. He is conscientious, honest and reliable, won't over charge you, and will give you your money's worth, I would want to hire him again, on my next project !

Fantastic experience with Deaville Roofing from start to finish. Highly recommend for roof repair or a new roof. John came out and gave us a very fair quote after he inspected the roof himself. Not all roof repair companies do this. We had a long detailed house inspector's list of concerns and John addressed everything within a couple of days so we could wrap up the sale of our home. Most importantly he is licensed and insured.

What an amazing experience we had working with Junior! He is incredibly competent. Any idea I had, he could pull up pictures on his phone from similar jobs he had completed. We had him do crown moulding, including a detailed tray ceiling, window trim, install cabinets above the washer/dryer, and next week he is putting in a counter above the washer/dryer.

I had TRZ Services install a wall mounted flat screen TV and rewire the cable and electrical outlets behind the TV instead of the wires hanging down to the original outlets. They were professional, friendly and most of all neat and on time. I would recommend their services and would reuse them for future projects.

Bill did more than the job entailed, extras--raking all the fallen pine straw, cones, leaves etc and bagged everything neatly. He also cleaned the outside wall below the gutters, and installed gutter guards. He was very considerate, on time, and efficient. I have already told my friends and neighbors about his services and the excellent performance. He is also a man of all talents and skills as a handyman, painter, power washer. Will use him again.

James, his brother, (and his wife) all came to my house to take a look at my gate. I had only put in my request an hour or so before, and was pleasantly surprised that he was able to come by so quickly. James offered various options as to how to keep the gate from sagging. Most of the work was performed last night and then James and his brother returned today to finish things up. He grew up in this business, is very dependable, and did what he said he would do- fixed my gate! I would definitely recommend him for gate repairs.

Since I moved to N. Charleston about two years ago, I needed to have numerous repairs done to my home both inside and outside. I needed a cement walk leading to the front entrance, a new driveway, a small enclosed back porch built, landscaping, various plumbing and electrical work, painting porch and installing new fencing in back yard, etc., Nick Fazi was the only contractor who answered my requests promptly, worked with me in a professional manner and I found to be honest and reliable. He answered all my questions and sent excellent workers to provide the services required. I find the quality of work to be to my satisfaction and found his workers to be dependable and courteous. All work was done in a timely fashion and Nick follows up on all work to make sure everything is done to his satisfaction and mine. I am quite satisfied with East Coast Doctors and will continue to utilize this company for future needs.

About

Before you get roofing quotes on your leaking and lost shingles roof, let me inspect for storm loss. Our storm-damage roofing experts are dedicated to completing your project (large or small) with quality results, on time, and we will work with you and your insurance company to receive a fair claim settlement. We deal with storm damage. Various ways shingles can be damaged are as follows: * Hail Loss of granule layer on the shingle will cause the organic-based center of the shingle to be exposed to the sun’s UV rays. This will cause serious deterioration of the shingle in a short period. Furthermore, hail can actually puncture or seriously damage your roof. * High Winds Over 50 miles per hour can lift the shingle and cause seals to break, never to be resealed. The unsealed shingles will then flap in the breeze and soon snap off. * Ventilation Improper or inadequate ventilation in your attic will cause the shingles to scorch and bubble up, causing a serious problem. An inspection by a trained technician can verify the extent of the damages and outline the means to get them repaired.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
