We hired Quality Control Construction Services, LLC to remodel our Den, and they accomplished that task in the window which we demanded, and did so in a most professional manner. Mr. Dain carried out our instructions, for this top-to-bottom job to the letter, offering his professional advice where he felt it was required, always working closely with us to turn the original, dark, 1971-outfitted, ceiling-to-floor knotty pine paneled room into a new, brighter and inviting space. These professionals removed our old 'cottage cheese' ceiling, effected necessary repairs, sanded it smooth painted it & installed a new ceiling fan; then went on to remove the paneling down to chair rail height, and installing sheetrock with crown molding, using corner blocks to create a more sophisticated appearance. Chair rail and trim moulding was added and the remaining woodwork was also painted, as was the original red brick fireplace. After installing a new mantel, the original red brick hearth and its surround was finished with a more modern tile. As a finale, the floor was stripped of its glossy finish, thoroughly sanded, tacked-off with mineral spirits and re-sealed with satin finish polyurethane. I would like to add that Mr. Dain's company exercised extreme care when removing the genuine pine paneling so it could be re-purposed into donor homes in which they do volunteer carpentry. In closing, my wife and I have to say we would definitely place Quality Control Construction Services LLC at the top of any list should we seek bids on further remodeling projects.

My deck was rebuilt with only a small portion of the old wood used. The rest was new wood. Jayme added lattice and the deck turned out great. The price ended up 100.00 over his quoted price but it was still reasonable and worth it. After all the rain the deck was able to be stained which didn't turn out like I had expected but it may have been from all the rain. Areas of the wood didnt take the stain and some ran but overall it came out good. It improved my home.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

        Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
