Brian F. says, "This will be an excellent review. I found Jeff on Thumbtack back in June while my wife and I were house-shopping. Our home inspector recommended having an HVAC pro check out the HVAC system. I put in requests on Thumbtack, and Jeff was one of the first to respond. His answer was real, not just a brush-off. When I talked to him and told him what was going on, he jumped on it and went to the house to take a look. Didn't even make me meet him there, just took it upon himself to check it out and even take photos and send them to me, showing me what he found! He wrote up an estimate, which we were then able to use--supported by the photos--during the negotiation for our house. I offered to pay him for that visit, and all he asked was a nice word posted online. He didn't even care if I used his services or not, he just wanted me to have good information. Next, we bought the house. It came with a home warranty, and we were not sure if the warranty provider would let us use Jeff. We went back and forth with the warranty people for a while, and they would only use their contractors. However, Jeff stayed in touch with us throughout and answered our questions and helped clarify what other contractors were telling us. This took almost 4 months. I felt like I really had a friend in the HVAC business, like I could call and he would answer or call me back. So after the months of haggling with the warranty place, they ultimately decided they would not cover the HVAC. And actually I am glad they did not, because the technician they sent to check out the unit was not so into his job. We were going to just heat with kerosene this winter and get a new unit in the spring. But after a couple cold nights (that weren't even that cold), we called Jeff. He always answers when he can, and this was like 7 or 8pm. We explained what happened, and he was more than happy to help us out. He came again to the house because we wanted an opinion on the condition of the ductwork. He takes the time to explain things and is just generally a helpful guy. So I think this was Thursday night that we called him. Today is Monday, and our new HVAC is installed. Both he and the gentleman who came with him were nice guys, fun to hang out with and didn't mind me asking questions during the install. He also warranted his labor for 2 years, and his prices are very competetive. We had quotes from a major local company that were more than double what he told us. I'm sure they would have done a fine job, but with Jeff I felt like he cared about us and is still excited about doing a good job. He recommended a company he used for financing, and they also did a great and fast job. Pain-free, hassle-free. This was the experience I had with Jeff Beck and if I ever need anything else heated or cooled I will be calling him."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.
