Words cannot express how grateful I was to have had Resena as my makeup artist on my wedding day. She actually made me look at least 10 years younger, and the detail of my makeup was absolutely flawless. I a was simply amazed, because I looked like a completely different person. I wish I had enough money to hire her on a full time basis.

Laurel was fantastic! I hired her to do makeup/hair for my wedding. (Bride, Matrons of Honor, Bridesmaids, Mother of the bride and mother of the groom) She was so accommodating and quick to answer any questions I had leading up to the big day! All of my girls had their own ideas of what they wanted to do with their hair/makeup and Laurel made it happen. They all looked absolutely stunning on my wedding day and I couldn't have been more please with my hair and makeup. As great as she is with hair, she's even better with makeup. It's definitely her wheelhouse! I recommend her highly to anyone looking for a professional, talented, sweet hair and/or makeup artist for any event-- especially a wedding. She traveled such a long way for BOTH my hair trial and wedding! She's awesome!

Canaan. is. amazing. She is everything you would want in a wedding makeup and hair artist! She styled all of my bridesmaid's hair (all 7 of them), and did the makeup for me and my maid of honor. She finished them in a reasonable time, and we have never looked or felt more beautiful. Canaan is professional, friendly, and most importantly, incredibly talented. Further, her rockstar personality fit in with me and my bridesmaids like she was one of my old, longtime best friends - that made me feel so at ease and comfortable during both my one-on-one trial and the morning of my wedding! You will never feel like a stranger is in the room. Further, I have had many bad experiences with makeup artists where they don't listen to what I want or what I envision - you will NOT have this issue with Canaan. She listened to me, to my concerns, and to my desires, and created my wedding-day image that was better than I could have ever hoped for. I swear to you, she will not disappoint. She was absolutely one of the best decisions I made during my entire wedding process, and I cannot say enough positive things about her.

Hannah makes you feel so special when doing your makeup. She compliments you and really listens to your requests and gives very helpful advice. She makes the, sometimes long, process of getting your makeup done go by so quickly with her personable personality. It feels more like you're hanging out with a friend, then a makeup artist, while she makes you look beautiful. Would definitely recommend her to anyone in need of makeup services.

I've worked with Justine on a countless number of shoots. She always arrived early and was consistently a key asset to have on board. Justine got along with all team members, acted as a professional, and brought a good sense of humor when allowed. She's worked my shoots as a wardrobe stylist and a makeup artist and is amazing performing both tasks. When Justine is scheduled, that's one less person I have to worry about!

Meghan did my hair and makeup and my bridesmaids' makeup starting at 6 a.m. on my wedding day morning! She had prepared a detailed schedule to keep us on track with a tight timeline. She got right down to it and I watched her make up my bridesmaids while I waited for my turn. When I saw how beautiful they looked, I was beyond happy. I know they felt gorgeous, and no one wanted to take their makeup off after the wedding. I loved my hair and makeup! My mom cried tears of joy when she saw me. I loved that I looked like a bride, elegant, but still looked and felt like me. The whole time Meghan was funny and supportive. The atmosphere was really light hearted and I think all of us had a great time getting put together by her.

Embody Beauty was able to get me booked in a very short time for my birthday! Tammy was my makeup artist and I described to her what I was looking for and she gave me just that and much more. She arrived on time ready to work and I felt absolutely beautiful once she was complete! I will definitely be booking her again for my next big event.

I highly recommend hiring Karlee for your special event or occasion. She is an exceptional artist who pays great attention to detail. She provides luxury services & is determined to provide the client with looks that suit their necessities & meet their beauty requests. I have worked with her on jobs/projects as a fellow makeup artist, have been in Karlee’s chair as a client, & have seen her execute a variety of hair & makeup looks. Karlee is a very creative, attentive, professional & (most importantly) sanitary artist who is dedicated to pleasing her clients. I truly recommend Karlee Crose for your beauty needs!

We hired Kristina to do the makeup for a short indie film. She was always on time, listened carefully to what we wanted, and had the skills to create many different looks for our actors. I've also experienced and seen her make-overs directly. She is unlike other makeup artists in style and technique in creating a look that draws attention to the eyes. Exceptional work.

She knows what she's doing and encourages you not to shy about what look you want. I highly recommend Kyla. I plan on having her be my makeup artist for special occasions in the future.

Cordnie came in last minute as a wedding makeup artist replacement. Originally I chose a different artist that was a little more well known, but the artist cancelled on me last minute. Cordnie not only quickly found time to do a trial session prior to my wedding date for comfortability, but she was on time, the makeup was flawless, and she worked swiftly enough that people outside of my wedding party were able to buy her services as well before the wedding began. Our makeup lasted from 12 noon until 11pm when the wedding ended. That says a lot about her products. From what I saw, she used mostly Mac, which was comforting for me. I would recommend her to anyone! She went above and beyond, and We couldn't have asked for better.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

      • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
      • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
      • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
      • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
      • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

      • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
      • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
      • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
      • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
      • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
      • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
      • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
