If I could give Jeff at Efficient Heating Cooling 10+ Stars on here, I would! I submitted an inquiry via Thumbtack for AC installation and Jeff was one of the first techs to respond. Although the service that I needed wasn't urgent, he made himself available and was at my residence to check out my unit rather quickly. I've dealt with many companies for different services and some companies will get over on you, but Jeff was VERY genuine. He knows this line of work and won't just throw out an outrageous price. He will make sure to understand the issue, thoroughly explain it back and give whatever options are available. He inspected my system and was able to recommend the fix needed for my unit AND it was at a VERY affordable price which was a HUGE plus for me. He was very professional and a pleasure to work with. For ANY Heating and Cooling Services, I'd HIGHLY Recommend Jeff a Efficient Heating Cooling and Home Services. I will definitely use his service again!!!

I took this long to do a review because I had Payton repair my HVAC air ducts which were never installed properly and leaks/moisture etc was unbelievable. I had several quotes that said I had to replace entire system of ducts, Payton said he could repair for very much less cost. Mostly I needed only the connections redone right, and new insulation wrapping around trunk, not trunk line replacement. The savings was approx. 75% less than other quote. I waited on the review until I got my next electric bill so I could see what difference I was experiencing before I wrote the review. I AM VERY HAPPY, VERY HAPPY INDEED. My bill is 50% less than it has ever been. I will pay for the repair in savings within 6 months! He actually even came early for the repair as he completed the prior job early so that was a bonus as well. He was in and out, got it done, and reasonable on pricing. Did what he said he was going to do. I will hope to hire him again as needed with other projects I have coming soon now that I am saving $ on my power bill : )

Mo of Oasis Air did an awesome job installing 2 registers in our duct work. He fabricated the metal duct to install the registers. He did it in a timely manner. We have an old system and he had to custom fabricate the metal that makes the duct works better. He is punctual and very friendly. We will surely hire him again if we needed more work done. If you need any duct or hvac work done we highly recommend Mo of Oasis air you wouldn't be disappointed. He delivers good quality work for a reasonable price.

Kent and his crew did a great job of taking my vision to completion! I had tried my hand at remodeling one of our bathrooms. It didn't go over extremely well. Kent came in and cleaned up my dirty work. Demo, tile, plumbing, electrical...the whole kit-and-kaboodle. I was so pleased with his work that I have also hired him to help with a complete home renovation. Thanks for your hard work Kent. The bathroom looks GREAT!

My job was an appliance installation. I needed to have an old built-in oven/microwave combo removed and a new one installed. Nathan showed up ahead of schedule, trimmed our cabinet cutout to fit the new unit in, completed the installation, hauled off the old unit and cleaned up after himself. His main business is heating and cooling, but I would recommend him for projects like this as well.

True Temp Heating and Cooling is a good company ran by a good family. I never had central air conditioner in my life and wasn't sure I needed one. But my wife gets cold in the winter. Ever since True Temp Heating and Cooling installed the air conditioner my house has always felt very comfortable. My wife is always warm. Happy wife, Happy Life. They had to make a mess of some of the places in my house, but they cleaned it up and everything looks great.

Went above-and-beyond in replacing our central air-conditioning unit--and thus far, we are very pleased. Their bid was reasonable (lower than their competitor's), the work was done on time, and they even "corrected mistakes" left behind by other service companies. Personable and courteous--a positive experience for us. Thank you, Air Refrigeration Heating & Cooling!

We were at our wits end with our unit and didn’t know which way to turn. Laying in bed one night i got on Thumbtack to find someone to help us. Someone i could read reviews on. I messaged Darrow and to my surprise had an almost immediate response. I was offered a free consult and an appointment as soon as the following morning. Chad is an awesome guy that takes pride in what he does and gives it to you straight. When the wrong unit was sent he drove to Alabama to get it himself so we wouldn’t be left in the heat another day. To top it off, the evening he was here installing it and terrible storm came through but he pushed through so it would be cooling before he left that night. He was back the following day and finished his work and made sure all was in working order with heat and air. I will recommend Darrow to my loved ones because I know he will take care of them just as he has us!!!

Cumberland Cooling are professional, quick, explain everything in detail (and in a way in can actually understand it!). Plus they are really honest about what makes sense for you - not what costs the most $$. While my unit is super old and needs to be replaced, they helped me with a quick fix and helped me make a plan for when I'm more prepared for a significant investment in my HVAC system. Highly recommend Blake and John Mark and the rest of the guys at Cumberland Cooling!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
