I hired Dutch to install a new threshold, properly seal the space below it, and repair a door jamb that had become rotted. He did an outstanding job for a very fair price, and I will look forward to hiring him again for future projects at our townhome.

Steve was hired to to do what we thought was a simple tile job, replacing missing/damaged tiles to the shower wall in our recently purchased home. After removing the old tile, we were shocked to find out that the walls were totally rotted out! Upon further inspection he discovered the floor (and subflooring) under the tub was rotted also! The cause of all the water damage? Old, rusty deteriorated plumbing fixtures (pipes, drains faucets) that were hidden from plain view. Steve "held our hand" every step of the way, assuring us through his calm demeanor, expertise and skill as he spent the next three days tearing out all old bath and shower components (including floors and walls) and totally rebuilding and installing the new shower and tub! Knowing we were first time homeowners who just moved in, he was extremely generous with the bill he presented to us. We will definitely call on him for future repairs/remodel projects!

The price we paid was much less than any other bid we received. We are very pleased with the siding and gutter installation. This company is a small business where the owner and one other guy did all the work. The owner is a family man and could only work short days due to taking and picking up his daughter from school. I still feel like the job was completed in a very timely manner. We would definitely use them again.

Tony and his team had to navigate a tiny crawlspace to repair several joists and reinforce key areas of our home. There was added time pressure, due to the quickly approaching sale of the house--these repairs were conditional to the closing. Not only was Tony prompt with communications and right on schedule for every visit, but also completed the work with time to spare.

Andrew Eastin repaired a window that had cracked. It was a small job for a reputable contractor, but he was willing to take it on. Andrew was very responsive on my first inquiry with Thumbtack and set up the appointment within a short time. He came on time and stayed until the job was completed. I plan on using Andrew for other projects that I might have in the future. You will find him very professional and reasonable.

We hired David to either replace or repair the tile floor in our kitchen. He came in, diagnosed the problem, and gave us the information we needed to make an informed decision about what we wanted to do. We ended up replacing the entire floor, as the previous job was very poorly done. After removing all traces of the previous floor, he worked with us to design a pattern that is absolutely beautiful! We were so happy with the work he was doing that we extended the project to include a tile backsplash and under cabinet lighting. The end result is a kitchen renovation that is beautiful, down to the last detail! Throughout the project David was always very fair and honest with his billing. The job he did was worth every penny and then some! We will always call David first for any future home needs, and recommend him without reservation.

Brad was great to work with. From start to finish he was there the whole way. Windows look great and the metal capping he did made the windows look better. Brad was there during the whole installation to make sure everything went correctly and that we were satisfied with product. I love the sliding door with the blinds in between the glass. The sliding doors at the big box stores are terrible compared to this door. The sliding door is made similar to windows and have the same low-e glass as windows. The installation crew was great, they worked hard and made sure everything was exactly how I wanted. The metal bending they did for the capping was amazing. They even did my garage door frame where I had wood rot at bottom of frame. These windows and doors are some of the best available when come to u factor and most important air infiltration rating. Most window companies to not advertise their air infiltration ratings because they are so poor.

The job was completed. Jeff Adkins was very through in measuring the window. He was much better at giving an estimate than 2 other contractors I called. He ordered the glass and it came in pretty much when he said it would. It took a little while for us to schedule an installation date due to my scheduled out of town trips and my willingness to wait for him to have the glass for another job in this area so he could do them at the same time. After agreeing on a date and time for installation they did not show up as agreed and when I called him, he said he was still waiting for the glass on the other job and expected it by 11:00. The appointment was for 8:00 am. I called again at 11:00 and he said he still didn’t have it. I told him I didn’t want to wait any longer and he said he would have to go back to his house and get the glass for our job and would be here at 12:00. By 12:30 I had to call again and he said he had been stuck in traffic and was at I40 and Hyw 96 which was still 45 from my house. They finally arrived at 1:30. They were very efficient at installing the window and it turned out perfect. Overall I would probably use him again but I would be more diligent in following up on his scheduling.

Michael and Daniel were a pleasure to work with! They hung 5 interior doors, undercut them for flooring, installed risers and skirts to our stairwell to prepare for carpet installation. Highly recommend! They even fixed our front door that wasn't opening properly without even being asked. Great to work with and I will keep them in my phonebook for any future needs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
