Alex and her wonderful team were incredibly prompt and made my mothers and bridesmaids look absolutely gorgeous. She was incredibly responsive to all of my questions that I had leading up to my wedding, and very flexible and attentive to detail. She made sure everyone in the wedding party was ready on time and honestly came in to save the day when I really needed her. She did absolutely gorgeous hair & makeup for me for my rehearsal dinner, and I would hire her again in a heartbeat and recommend her to anyone needing hair and makeup services. She is kind, fair, and very talented. I am grateful to her for making my wedding day even more special!! ~Bethany

Resena was absolutely amazing! I found her here on Thumbtack about 1 month before my wedding and luckily she was available. After looking at pictures of her work and exchanging messages with her for a few days, I felt a connection to her and knew she was the person for me (not to mention she is from Atlanta- same as my husband)! She was very flexible and came to my MOH's house for the makeup trial one evening. See picture attached. She has such a professional setup! Brings in a huge studio light, her own chair and lays out all brushes and makeup on the table- very impressive prep! The makeup trial was awesome and I really had a chance to see what I would look like on my big day. I already had my hair trial that day, so seeing the full view was great! I don't wear makeup often (my husband actually hates it) and I wanted to look very natural, just polished and pretty for the wedding- she completely understood. She was very receptive to my concerns and adjustments I wanted to make to my eyes and lips. On the big day she arrived early completing my mom's makeup and then mine. I received so many compliments throughout the day SPECIFICALLY about my makeup! People even commented that my mom looked better for my wedding than she did for her wedding 2 years prior (probably because I did the makeup for hers), lol. Bottom line, Resena was absolutely amazing. Always prompt, always professional and definitely put out a great work product! She helped make me a beautiful bride! She was also much more affordable than others I found around Nashville! I know thumbtack is an unconventional way to find a makeup artist for your wedding, but Resena is definitely the right person for the job! I wish I could get married again so she could do my makeup! :) Thank you so much Resena!! See attached for a couple of wedding pictures. (Sorry they will not rotate the correct way).

I don't think I could have felt anymore beautiful on my wedding day! My hair and makeup turned out exactly as I had wanted it to. Planning a destination wedding is a little more difficult (IE. not having a trial run before the big day) but I was in great hands and had no need to worry. Not only was Pamela highly experienced she was also accommodating. We had a last minute request the day of the wedding from my mother to get hair and makeup done and she was able to do so. I highly recommend Pamela. Thank you, Vanessa (The Bride)

I hired Stephanie to do the makeup of myself, my four bridesmaids, and my mother. She did some phenomenal work on the 6 of us! While Stephanie can do hair, in order to cut down on the time we would be getting ready, she enlisted the help of her friend Jen Ruggles to do our hair. All in all, the two of them did a fantastic job! For 6 people with both Jen and Stephanie, Stephanie quoted a flat rate that was then divided in two to pay each of them. I think it was reasonable, especially considering that both of them were willing to travel to us and do our hair and makeup on site (which means we got some great "getting ready" photos with our photographer!). Bear in mind that Stephanie has a family. She had to change meeting times in order to take care of her family. So, don't be too worried if that happens. She does her job and does it well! She's also highly communicative and an active Pinterest user! (And that made it easier in showing both her and Jen what I had in mind for makeup and hair.) Overall, Stephanie is definitely a good option for hiring for wedding makeup!

Hannah makes you feel so special when doing your makeup. She compliments you and really listens to your requests and gives very helpful advice. She makes the, sometimes long, process of getting your makeup done go by so quickly with her personable personality. It feels more like you're hanging out with a friend, then a makeup artist, while she makes you look beautiful. Would definitely recommend her to anyone in need of makeup services.

Absolutely adore Lecia! Her responsiveness, her talent, and her flexibility were amazing! The day of my trial I had asked Lecia to try something different on me as I thought I wanted to look completely different from my normal days. Not only did she accommodate, but when I realized in the end that I may have asked for a bit too drastic, she worked with me to find a great balance in what I was comfortable with but felt amazing in. She is such a delight to be around and makes the whole time you are with her so calming and fun! I would absolutely recommend Lecia and her team to anyone looking for hair and makeup for any event!

Crystal is not only an amazing MUA, but an amazing human being! She is so humble and sweet. Her makeup skills are just inane. She did my best friend and my makeup for a bachelorette party, and did outstanding! She also does makeup classes that I did attend. I did an one on one makeup class with her, and she shows you step by step how to do your makeup and what the best brands to use without breaking the bank. I would highly recommend this amazing woman to do anyones makeup. Keep being a rockstar girl!

I hired Mary Elise to do my hair and makeup for my wedding. i was unsure of what I wanted for my hair so she let me bounce ideas off of her and gave me advice and we decided what we both loved. She did a trial (which is hard to find people to do but I felt I really needed one to feel comfortable) and we discussed any changes I wanted to be made. She made note of the small changes and on my wedding day was it was perfect! I absolutely loved it! She also did my makeup for my wedding which was flawless! She was on time and really had a hand in my wedding not being too stressful! She made this part of the wedding something I really didn't have to worry about! I would absolutely recommend her!

Hannah did my hair and make up for a video shoot for a conference I traveled to Nashville for. With very little feedback she knew exactly what I wanted and the results exceeded expectations. I was able to keep the same look for a dinner 8 hours later and got to hear “stunning” / “love your hair” /“wow”. Hannah’s calming demeanor also minimized my stress about doing the video. I also picked up some great make up tips. Hannah is getting booked in advance the next time I’m in Nashville!!

Katie-Laine did my makeup for my birthday and she was fantastic! I have a toddler and I rarely get to feel clean and pretty, Katie-Laine did an outstanding job and I felt great going out with my friends for a much needed girls night out. She was super friendly and professional. I'd definitely hire her again and I'd recommend her for any event or occasion. I'm also going to hire her for a consultation on how to create a daily look for myself.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.
