We had Lettuce Do Lunch & Dinner come out and do drop-off catering for our company Christmas party for about 60 people. I was too busy to ever eat any of the food, but all reports were that the food was delicious. I was very happy with the price, variety, and quantity. If you have heavy eaters you may want to buy for more than your actual number of people, but the amount given was very generous for the price. Pam arrived right on time and got everything set up in a flash. We'll probably be calling again come next Christmas!

Kristin has catered several parties for us over the past few years, each with about 40 guests. Each time, Kristin's creations have been inventive, creative, and absolutely delicious. The service was well timed and executed perfectly. Kristin was also very helpful in recommending waitstaff and bartenders to assist with the service. Hiring Kristin to take care of the menu takes a lot of the pressure of hosting a party off of me - I know the food and service will be a highlight of the event.

We absolutely loved having HoneyFire Kitchen as our caterers for our wedding. Everyone at the wedding loved our food and we got so many compliments from people! Shane and his team really did a great job from the beginning and far exceeded our expectations as wedding caterers. We even got to try samples of all the food we were having in advance so we knew exactly how it was going to taste. Thanks so much to Shane and the team at HoneyFire Kitchen for all of the great food and service on our wedding day! :)

We hired Chef Iris to cater a party for my daughter's birthday. Iris was the first responder to my Thumbtack request and was extremely courteous, swift to respond, and quoted a great price. We corresponded a few times leading up to the event, and on the day of the event she was prompt, swift, and completely prepared for everything. She even called to let me know there was traffic on I-24, AND arrived on time regardless! The food was amazing. Her Swedish Meatballs were so good, I could live off them for the rest of my life and die happy. Pizza Calzones were phenomenal, Roast Beef sliders were delicious, and the wings were gone in about 10 mins, but only because the kids were not aware of them for 9. I am definitely going to try and hire Chef Iris again for any future events.

Celeste, the owner is very professional, courteous and very helpful in creating a menu to make your party perfect. The food is delicious, using the highest quality and freshest ingredients, the presentation is spectacular. When Celeste arrived with my order, she assisted me with arranging the appetizers and preparing the table to look fabulous. Everything was perfect, the flavored lemonades were so refreshing too. We entertain often and I will always use Celeste for my catering needs in the future. I’m So happy I found Go Go Gourmet.

Peg Leg Porker responded to our Thumbtack request with a personal note indicating familiarity with our rehearsal picnic location. Heather, their catering manager, was well informed to work with us offering advice when asked. She was available during the four month waiting period to answer additional questions. The set up was on time, the food was FABULOUS (providing a great topic of conversation beyond the engaged couple). Heather and Christopher served us well without intruding on the joy of the evening. They cleaned up quietly but only after waiting until there was a lull in the activities that wouldn't interfere with the anecdotes being shared. GREAT CATERERS and true professionals.

Martha catered our grown up birthday party for about 20 friends. The food was delicious and beautiful. Several guests inquired as to who had made such tasty dishes. Martha was a quiet, efficient, and capable presence in our home during the party. We were able to feel utterly at ease, knowing she had everything in hand.

Chef Laura has the ability to create delicious AND nutritious organic meals that will appeal to all your guests. Her take on the traditional Thanksgiving menu--green bean casserole, for example, made with fresh green beans, mushrooms, caramelized onions and quinoa--left even the die-hard traditionalists heading for seconds. Her takes on chicken (pomegranate glazed), fish (lemon-dill cod; Tuscan salmon), her fresh and flavorful salads ( cranberry apple with Dijon vinaigrette)and hearty, healthy soups (caramelized carrot and fennel) set Chef Laura apart from other caterers. She is a pleasure to work with and listens to her clients. Her goal is to prepare creative, nutritious, organic meals that appeal to a wide range of palates. She succeeds at this. Your guests will appreciate your fine "taste" in selecting Chef Laura.

Chef Anthony catered my dinner party -lamb chops with a cabernet sauce, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, and smashed garlic red potatoes. This was the best meal ever, and my guest (who are not the easiest people to please) all agreed. I will definitely use his services for my next gathering. Thank you so much for making my event a success.

At first I thought I could get things together myself, but I soon realized getting together an awesome wedding is a full time job! Aundrea took me on as a client and took a HUGE weight off my shoulders! She is so sweet and kind and took over immediately. You name it, she was in line with EVERYTHING, that makes a wedding “storybook” like my friend called it. The venue, the food, the photographer, the drinks, the bartender, the flowers, the decor of the venue in the colors we chose, the invites, the thank you notes, the seating cards, organizing the ceremony itself with the officiate, the timing of the ceremony and the music of the ceremony, the wedding parting gifts to the guests, decorating my house for the after party, OH MY GOSH, have I forgotten anything! JP took care of us and made our event the most awesome day of our life. Thank you JP and Thank you Aundrea.”

Whisked and Ready is a phenomenal catering company. I have used their services for several large cocktail parties and even an intimate lunch gathering. The food is not only delicious, but fun! It's not like anything I've seen or tasted in Nashville. Jennifer McNabb takes the time to understand exactly what type of party you are hosting and she creates the perfect menu for your event. She really gets to know the client and brings creativity to each dish. The meatballs and salted Carmel Crisps are a must for any gathering. I highly recommend Whisked and Ready.

We met Nicholas through some mutual friends, he brought food to a party and we were hooked from the very first mouthwatering bite! I have not tried a food from Nicoletta's that I haven't absolutely loved. His service is outstanding and nothing less than professional, he doesn't take shortcuts, and will do everything he can to try to make your ideas come to life. His events are downright gorgeous, the man has an eye for decor and set ups, every last detail is checked and rechecked. His home delivery service is GENIUS, and I don't remember the last holiday we actually cooked for because of his amazing business! I recommend him to EVERYONE, I come across so I will now recommend him to you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
