Dutch is phenomenal! He is always prompt, professional and just an overall great person. Although the work on removing our hardwood floor was a bigger project than anticipated, he completed the job with a smile. He exceeded our expectations with the installation of our new porcelain tiles! He also has done carpentry work for our home when our dogs decided to chew through a window sill and moulding. He is now our "go to" guy!

Chris is highly professional and works extremely hard. He is always on time and steadily works throughout the day, giving you everything you are paying for. He pays attention to detail as if he were carefully working in his own home. He is cheerful and easy to communicate with. I felt as if I had known him for years, yet it has only been days. I am totally impressed and happy with his installation of our wood floors. Every plank lines up perfectly with other floor planks, unlike other installs I've seen where the contractor said, the planks are suppose to be out of alignment to give the floor some character. I say if you want it done right and you can't do it yourself ... call Chris. Thanks Chris for a job well done and for giving our home a face lift we will all enjoy for many, many years. Chris installed the wood floors in our St. Cloud home.

I had other flooring contractors come over but hands down Michael was the best. He was honest, fair in price, and professional. His family and employees we're all so nice when I had to discuss things via phone, email, or in person during the job. The workmanship by Micheal and his employee's was awesome. The installed engineered hardwood floors came out great! Michael is great at what he does and when he told me that he is 3rd or 4th generation in his family to be in flooring it showed! For example, we had an issue with two rooms that joined one another. He customed made me two 6 ft reducers out of a rough piece of natural oak to make this transition between the two rooms look awesome. It came out unbelievable! Very rarely do I offer comments. In the case, he deserves positive feedback. Micheal has a nice family flooring business.

He was very honest, knowledgeable, and genuine. He advised that I would need to replace certain parts of the damaged wood floor instead of just sanding and refinishing. Very nice guy. Came out to give a free quote and steered me in the right direction. Integrity is a trait rarely seen today and will absolutely use his service in the future!

We had some major water damage in a considerable portion of our hardwood floors and subfloor. Jose and crew showed up quickly, assessed the problem accurately, and gave us an estimate in a day or so. The work (projected to take as much as 3-4 weeks) took a little more than one week, and the estimate was spot on. Jose also helped considerably with the insurance adjuster. Best experience I’ve had with a contractor.

David Binder did an outstanding job fixing my bathroom floor..... The tile and grout were actually coming up off the concrete.... Mr. Binder is superb. He knew exactly what to do to correct the problem... He completed the work in a timely manner and cleaned the work area to perfection... My bathroom tiled floor is now beautiful.

Erley did a great job with laying my hardwood floors. He was on time and did the work quickly but with caution. He was also very easy to communicate with throughout the process and was very helpful in answering my questions. I would most certainly recommend him to others and would use him again in the future as needed!

This is a long overdue review. I initially contacted Bobby about doing a fence for us, but we discovered some other things that needed attention on our new house. Fortunately Bobby was able to help us out with those things as well. Bobby did the following for us: polyurethane coat on the hardwood, fridge and stove hookup, construction debris haul off, gutter guards, shingle replacement, replacing the damaged wood on our roof gables, and suspending water lines under the house (previously held up with electrical tape). Bobby did these things at a very reasonable price, he was always responsive, worked around our schedule (including working on weekends), and did great work. Probably the thing I appreciated the most was that Bobby doesn't take something on if he doesn't think he can do it very well. We had some water damage on our ceiling drywall that I asked Bobby to take care of. After cutting out the damaged drywall, he realized there were some issues with the ceiling joists that were going to make it much more challenging to get the drywall flush. Rather than just half-assing the job, Bobby let me know that it was a little outside of his skill set and recommended that I get a drywall pro to take care of it. In some of my other "handyman" experiences, I've had guys do more than they were really capable of, and end up doing a poor job. With Bobby, everything he did, he did extremely well, and when there was something he couldn't do, he was open and honest about it. Couldn't ask for more, and couldn't recommend more highly.

Jason and his crew did a wonderful job installing hardwood floors in several rooms in our new home. They had two rather large challenges. First, matching the existing hardwood that abutted the floors being installed. Second finishing the job before we arrived with our furniture from California. They came through on both. Jason was professional, responsive, and respectful of our home. We will use Taylor's for future projects and would highly recommend them.

Before and After photos- a HUGE difference. First experience with installing floors, and they made it a dream. Flexible, on time.. even willing to come in on the holiday to make sure the job was done to their satisfaction. (didn’t have to, though) They covered everything in two days at an extremely reasonable price. You’re missing out if you don’t hire them.

It's so nice that I hired recom LLC to help me finish the replacement for the hardwood floor. I was hesitating to decide on the laminated floor or an engineered hardwood floor. Mr. Amin is so patient and professional for answering all of my questions. The installers were so hard working with high efficiency. They finished the project within one day! The most important thing is they offered me the cheapest price! I am so happy to have them!

BKH Floors installed some vinyl flooring in my upstairs bathroom and did a wonderful job for a great price. Mr. Huppert went above and beyond to make sure the floor looked great and that I was happy. I found him to be a very nice, down to earth, honest gentleman who does very good work! He really knows his stuff and if I ever need any other flooring work done, he will be the first one I call.

Jeff put in new laminate flooring in 3 rooms of my house (so a fairly large job). He showed up when he said he would and finished in two days. He cleaned up everything and was considerate of the fact that my dog and I still had to live there during the installation. My floors look great and I love them! Wish I had done it sooner!

Very pleased with both of our projects! My wife and I updated/remodeled two of our rental properties in the North Nashville area. A referral from a family friend led us to Watkins Decorating. We worked with John directly for our carpet and hardwood flooring needs. His guidance, expertise and hands on approach made the process very simple and seamless. The finished product exceeded our expectations and we will be contracting with Watkins for any and all of our future flooring projects!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
