Hired Complete Solutions after meeting with several contractors based on their reviews. They were more expensive than others but I thought hey, you get what you pay for right? At the beginning of the discussions JD was super responsive and on top of everything. He was great when it came to installing the lights. We discussed payment and he said, 1/3 + materials up front, which I paid promptly, he said 1/3 when they start, which I paid, and then he said 1/3 when they finish. I made the mistake of making the last payment with them before they finished. JD came with his crew to finish out some work and they had to come back to do some dry wall repair and painting, he asked me for the final payment (less $70 bucks for the outstanding work). Well, almost 2 months later, they still haven't completed the job and have basically stopped contacting me about it. At one point, he sent his team out to do the work, told me they would be here at 10:30 am, I said great and scheduled house cleaning later that afternoon to clean up any mess, as I was having family over that weekend. No one showed at 10:30, I didn't get a call or a text or even an email. His folks showed up at 2:30, when the house was being cleaned, made a big mess in the kitchen, and still didn't finish the job. Said they'd be back in a few days... this was before Thanksgiving and guess what, I am still waiting. And for their work, well, it's okay but kinda sloppy - attaching photos.

We are still using Brad Thomas for various projects at the house we recently purchased. He has already begun reconstruction of a separate outbuilding which requires warmer weather for the concrete base and completion. He has completed creating and welding a perimeter steel railing around a large deck area, also reinforcing and repairing parts of the wooden deck that needed it. He has repaired and relined a fish pond in our entry area, correcting a slow leak that was entering a downstairs room. He is now installing new flooring in our guesthouse, having removed the old, buckled up linoleum. The job included adding new subflooring, installing a baseboard heater, reworking various electrical and plumbing and adding basebord around the various rooms. He is adept at carpentry and drywall. Weve found his work to be high standard - and done the way we ask it to be done. When he is not sure about how to proceed in any particular area he discusses it ahead of time with us. He does his best to stick to budget and estimate and is willing to work with whatever ideas we come up with. We will continue using Brad in the future.

We could not be more pleased with the drywall work completed for us by Mark and Keter-Royale Restorations. We had our entire dining room walls drywalled, most of our kitchen walls, the master bathroom, and several ceilings throughout the house. Mark was very kind in helping us decide on what would be best for our needs. Through the remodeling process, we have hit several snags with other projects that resulted in the drywall work changing, either adding additional work we did not foresee before all the electrical and plumbing or just having to push the work back because we were behind schedule. Through all of our setbacks, Mark was kind, understanding, and flexible with us the entire time. He came out to the house three separate times to look at questions we had before he began the project. Once he began the work, he was fast, stayed on schedule, was very communicative, and left the house clean every day (often cleaner than he found it). Compared to other subcontractors we have dealt with, I cannot speak highly enough of Mark's work and professionalism. As people who know very little about this process, he was understanding, patient, and willing to answer any of our questions, even unrelated to the drywall work. We were thrilled with his work and would hire him again in a second!

Zac did exactly what he said he'd do in exactly the amount of time he said he'd do it. I've had many projects done over the years and he is literally the first contractor I've ever seen actually show up in rain and wait on it to pass so he can work. I was very impressed with him and I would definitely hire him again.

Ivan has been working for me on multiple jobs since July of 2016. He started when I had an absolutely aweful contractor who damaged walls even in rooms they weren't supposed to be in. Ivan repaired the walls and installed crow molding and painted the walls. His work has been exceptional. I was very cautious after my terrible experience. I have found him to be a craftsman who is truly concerned about the quality of his work. He is honest in keeping track of time and materials. He also makes sure to clean up at the end of the day. He has an assistant and I have seen him supervising to make sure the quality is there in his work as well. He is a hard worker and does excellent work. He is worth every penny.

Daniel did an amazing job of screening in our existing covered patio. I spoke to several contractors, and no one but Daniel understood my vision for the project. In the end, it was even better than I had imagined, and it looks like it has always been part of the house. They came back after completion to adjust the doors and touch up the paint. Communication was terrific and they were a pleasure to work with. I'm planning to have them back asap to install a fence. And they left a birdhouse as a thank you gift!

Will did a great job for me. He worked on just about everything in my house. Started with drywall, paint, then stone work. Honestly I couldn’t of asked for a better job and a fair price. I could go on and on. These are just a few pictures of his work on my house after the wildfires took my old home away. Got me done on budget!

M & M builders does excellent work. Their expertise, knowledge and recommendations for our project as a whole were spot on! They were not the cheapest quote we received but they were fair and definitely did the best quality work. We had others before them and only thought about the dollar amount and as a result hired terrible contractors and wound up having to hire someone else to correct the job. Lesson learned on how you get what you pay for! We are super impressed with the quality of workmanship and professionalism displayed. We will definitely be using M&M again and know that they are honest and reasonable for good quality work. -SFL

I was looking for a quick turnaround on some particularly high and difficult gutter cleaning because of weather patterns. Mr. Ragland came out next day, cleaned the gutters and even took the time to rake up the grass where the ladder had matted it at a very reasonable cost. I am adding these guys to my list of go-to contractors.

My company purchased an investment property in Gatlinburg that needed some major renovations. After having a sour experience with another contractor, we were fortunate enough to find Roberts Renovations. Mickey was kind and courteous, and most important of all, knowledgeable and full of ideas on how to perfect our property. While we have only been able to make it through the first major phase of renovations (due to our financial constraints), we have no hesitation of using Roberts Renovation for all future projects for this home, and the homes to come. We are highly pleased with the quality of work that has been done, and highly recommend Roberts Renovation. Sincerely, Adam Edwards Mountain Bliss Enterprises Inc.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

      • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
      • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

      • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
      • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
      • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
