American Builders painted the exterior of our house. The quote was not the cheapest but also not the highest. They did an excellent job with the washing/cleaning of the house, taking great care not to damage the flowers and plants. As far as the actual painting, there was some concern over the coverage in a few areas that was addressed and taken care of right away. The only reason that we are not giving them a 5 star rating is that there are several areas of paint splatter and smears on the porch floors. Otherwise, they did a very thorough job.

I had roof damage from a terrible storm. I called around town and Mr. Cox was the only person that said he could come out the next day to take a look. He did just that and even repaired the damages THE SAME DAY!!! I didn't expect that but I was so pleased. The work was EXCELLENT! Better than the original builders. Mr. Cox and his employees were very professional and I highly recommend Precision Painting for all your contracting needs. You won't be disappointed.

The good: David Munns came to our home to review a large job. He quoted a very reasonable price. He showed up daily around 8-9 and worked till about 3-4 pm. David assured us he could get the job done right. We made sure he knew that we would supply anything he needed to get it done. He was also able to purchase paint at a great price. The Bad: David Munns suggested that we use flat paint instead of shiny because if we didnt he said that we would see every flaw in the paint. But we wanted eggshell because the paint was for kitchen and dining area and you can't wipe down flat paint if food spatter gets on it. We went with his recommendation at first before we understood this about dining areas. The flat paint did not look good though and the colors didn't look the same as the samples when applied to the walls. We purchased more paint for the second coat in eggshell. However after he painted the first coat we noticed that he had got paint all over the cabinets and our white trim, He also had assured us that he could paint over the wallpaper, had done it plenty of times before and it would look alright. He said that he and would peel back, sand and mudd the edges before painting them but he neglected to do so and it was looking pretty bad. All around our trim and the edges of the walls look terrible with the flat flaw covering paint. Also noted but not even mentioned to him cause we were trying to be easy going, was nail holes not filled in or sanded down just painted over leaving rough places and holes. Things we had agreed to be done before the job started. The terrible: I would have worked with all this but when we pointed this out and asked him about these things, he assured us he would fix it, we accepted that from him but then instead, he took offense to our having questioned his work and left without telling us that he was going. We were astonished that he would do that and it seemed very unreasonable to get so upset. After all we were paying him a lot of money for the job and just wanted to make sure it was done appropriately. He left more work to be done than when he started. David seemed personable but he didn't explain things well and took it personal when we asked him questions even though we assured him we just wanted to be on the same page and make sure the final result came out right. He seemed to want to cut corners instead of doing it right and as agreed. He blamed the builders any time we pointed out anow area saying that they had done a poor job when building our home. After Mr. Munns suprised us by leaving suddenly I tried to call and messaged him asking him to come back and tried to work things out but he didn't respond. We are very dissapointed and feel that Mr. Munns was unprofessional in his dealings with us just quitting like that. We thought we were fair with him and we also spoke calmly and nicely to him when asking him questions and pointing out what we wanted fixed. We paid a deposit and now have to dispute those charges minus paint costs and have other painters come in to finish the job and fix our cabinets. I would not recommend Liberty Painting to anyone. I didn't want to have to leave a bad review I actually hate this and wish Mr. Munns would have just stuck it out and tried to talk to us. We like to think we are on the same team and that's how it could have been. I hope he was just having a bad day but unfortunately that left us in a poor position that is gonna cost us to fix it.

The siding/wall/garage was fixed at my house, as well as masonry from split bricks. I was very impressed by the work of both David and his mason. The mason work looked like there was no damage at all! Great job!

First and foremost, this is my first time using Thumbtack, and I must say the process of hiring help is straightforward. I spoke with several companies and received a few estimates. In the end, I went with RG2, and I am very very happy I did. Robert and his team were very responsive, extremely knowledgeable and thorough, and most importantly, they were respectful of my home. The work was outstanding. They washed, cocked and painted my patio. This includes the walls, ceiling, door, and siding panel as well as the black rail. They cleaned up thoroughly once the job was complete. A few of my neighbors came by to see the patio and expressed interest in hiring this company. I highly recommend!

Let me be clear, they in no way compensated me for this review that is about to be submitted. I placed an ad through Thumbtack for the creation of a door that was not necessarily done before. Due to space constraints, I wanted a pocket door, but didn't want to cut the wall, so I settled on a barn door, but wanted it split as to save space on either side. When I called Steve Miller, he said emphatically, "yeah, I think we can do that". He and Dave (one of his workers came) and after hearing my idea, you could tell the ideas were percolating. He came up with a great idea for the split barn door and gave me options of whether to go cheap or if I wanted it to be perfect what it would be (I chose the latter). To be honest, the price was well under what I thought it would be by many hundreds of dollars. I also asked about replacing the front door, of which he said was no problem. Steve guided me to the find the best wood people in town to make sure I got a quality product and made sure I got the best prices. All was set and done until I removed an embedded counter that showed broken tile and sheetrock underneath. No matter. . .Steve was able to fit that in as well. His tile guy, Nick, was phenomenal and was a true artist and professional in his work. They set the tile, fixed the grout, fixed the drywall and replaced the baseboards. It looks completely brand new. While doing this, they were able to install the new door, create the new split barn door (with Julie, who is an artist and visionary in her own right) leading the design of it. Even though I was a bad client (adding more jobs on top one right after the other), it was done better than when I bought the house. Steve is a great boss to his people. He treats them well, and more importantly, he respects and values their opinions and help. They revere him and it shows in the quality of work and efficiency of which the tasks were completed. More importantly, when you see their minds work (including Steve as the architect), it is like watching real artists work, not just laborers. They take great pride in their art and I am extremely happy with the products. When it was all completed, the price was not commensurate with the quality of work involved. He could have charged me a few hundred dollars more and it would have still been a value. Steve Miller and his crew are top professionals and I guarantee that anytime I need a project done, they are number one on the list. You will not go wrong hiring them and I can promise it will be an enjoyable experience for all.

Noria and Joe did the remodeling for my Magnolia Restaurant in Byhalia. All the tile work, tearing out and putting up walls, sheetrock and paint and installed the big picture windows. They also painted the floor in the dining room. All the work was preformed in a timely manner and I know of at least one evening they were working at 1 am in the morning, getting a coat of paint on the floor. They installed the water heater, replaced busted water pipes. These folks cleaned up behind themselves, always on time and even when the materials came in for another job and they had to leave me for a half day to finish a job before me, they more than made it up. I would highly recommend them and invite you to look first hand at the work they did for me in Byhalia.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
