I am horribly disappointed with Dr. Johnny Downs from Downs Tree Service. After meeting with different companies, I had a choice to make between, what I believed to be two great company, Johnny Downs and a different one. I choose Johnny Downs in the end mainly because it seemed as if he and I agreed more with the maintenance over my Magnolia tree. Whereas, with the other person it was only a 90% agreement both price range quote were similar. I was very upfront with everyone who came to my house to provide a quote that if I hire them I expected the job to be completed before the last day of April due to my father’s arrival. It was 3 weeks out so they each promised they could do it with no issues. At first, Mr. Downs ask if he could schedule the maintenance during the last week of April, to which I was worried, but he guaranteed it could be completed in 1 day and before that Friday, so I agreed. We first settled for Monday, April 27th 2015. Then I get a call from him on Friday stating that he wanted to re-schedule my job for Tuesday instead and wanted a deposit of 25%, because I was very sick that Friday, I told him to just call and stop by on Monday for the deposit so he can begin the work on Tuesday, he agreed. Come Monday, I had to run between meetings and dropping by the house to check if he called or showed up. HE NEVER DID. By 3:30pm, I tried calling him, but to no avail, he did not answer. I waited till 4pm, when I had to once again run out. When I came back by 6pm I did noticed I had 1 missed call from him at 4:16pm, but no message. I figured since it was late anyway, he probably decided not to pick up the deposit and just collect the payment in full the next day on Tuesday after completion of his work. He was supposed to be by my house by 8am. I woke up early at 5:30am to get everything done as early as possible so that I can be here at the house the rest of the day, but guess what, 8am came, but he did not, 9am came, but he did not. Finally, I called at 9:30am to find out whether or not he was coming, and to my surprised, he NEVER intended on coming, he was working at another house. I was a bit upset because it felt as if he had no respect for my time, but because I wanted him to complete the job I simply asked if he was still coming that afternoon. His response was he wanted to reschedule to Thursday due to the weather. Now, I was a bit alarmed because I really needed this job to be done before Friday, so to reschedule for the 2nd time was scary mainly because I feared he would not show up yet again and reschedule. He said his rescheduling had to do with the weather only. I informed him that according to the weather channel it is supposed to rain on Thursday with a 60% chance, so it made no sense to reschedule for Thursday. He checked the weather forecast himself, and then claimed to realize that I spoke the truth, and offered to come on Wednesday instead which is tomorrow, then insisted on the deposit money. I told him I did not mind giving him a deposit given that I had it since last week, but that 25% is a lot of money and I really want to be sure that he won’t just collect it and still not show up, that I needed a real guarantee. He got upset and became really rude saying that if I don’t give him a deposit I can just call someone else to do my work. I tried to calm him down mainly because there really is not enough time to schedule a new contractor before Friday, and explain to him that I really just needed a guarantee that he was going to show up this time and not reschedule yet again; he got upset saying how he had been calling me multiple times and that I lied he never rescheduled before, and I told him that that was not true and I had records of every phone call and he only called me once on late on Monday, and I had proof that he did schedule me for Monday and called me Friday to reschedule. He just seemed to get angrier asking for deposit, then just demanded I just call someone else to do the work and hanged up. He does not know me, and to talk to me in such a matter, to have such little regards over my value and time I found it to be quite rude and offensive. Everyone I have hired via Thumbtack, I am sure can attest I am very nice, easy to talk to, and I ALWAYS PAY no problem. So to have this man insult me and treat me like I am trying to cheat him out of money even though, he is the one who never showed up to pick up the deposit, and he is the one who kept rescheduling on me; simply felt like a smack in the face, rude and horribly offensive. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. PS. To Mr. Johnny Downs. I get that you believe your business to be exceptional, and I won’t deny hearing you talk about your vision ideas in landscaping really made me almost see how beautiful my lawn would and could have been. But being good with ideas and your business does not give you the right to treat people like dirt. You want people to believe you are a worthy business man to hire then you must be willing to treat them with dignity and respect as we each deserve, and stop thinking your time is more valuable than theirs and keep cancelling and rescheduling at will without proper time given. Also, I suggest you stop over-booking and rescheduling with people. If you make a commitment, keep it. It is considered both polite and great customer service. Also, If, however, you choose not to show up to collect your deposit as you were supposed to, do not suddenly place the blame on the one who waited and stood waiting all day with the check. And mostly, a check takes 3 days to clear, so claiming that you MUST have a check 24hrs in advance so that you can pay for supplies is ridiculous, unless you plan all along to NOT SHOW UP or rip people off. Trust goes both ways. If you wish for a client to trust and have good faith in your word to show up and do the job that both agreed upon both verbally and written, then you must have trust and faith that that person will pay you in full, especially when only a 24hr window exist between your supposedly showing up to do the work due to your own negligence in your scheduling capabilities. I am sure it would have made little difference for you to have just come and do your job and gotten your whole money as promised and guaranteed. You claimed that if you buy supplies and I cancelled on you, you would have been at a loss financially, news flash, you are a landscaper, I am sure there are many people who uses black mulch. By the way a bit of a lesson for you, most stores, as long as you do not open the mulch bag, will also give full refund if returned. However, you taking my money and not showing up, does not come with such luxuries, so in the end us customers have more to lose, than you do on your services. Most regrettably disappointed, Emily Diaz
Downs Tree Service's reply
Johnny Downs Hello Emily. I apologize for anything that may have offended you in any way. I always stand behind my word and reputation. There has never been a single unresolved job or client in fourteen years of business. I also apologize that spring always causes a sudden increase in call volume. We are working very hard to hire and grow to accommodate all of our existing and new customers. Another reminder we have accumulated over a foot of rain already this month. Rescheduling is a common part of any industry that works outside dealing with the elements. Again very sorry and I hope everything turns out great. Sincerely, Johnny Downs.

Within minutes of submitting my inquiry on Thumbtack, Johnny replied. A visit was then made the next day for a quote. After I had a few quotes from others, I selected Downs tree service based on experience, clarity in work, timeliness displayed to date and price. The job date was set and Johnny Downs was there on time, performed what he said, crew was very polite and safety conscious. In summary, I've had a number of contractors perform work and have delays, high quotes, poor quality work, etc... I can say that with Downs, I received the best quality service from the beginning all the way through the job completion. I highly recommend Johnny Downs for any tree work!!! Five star rating is well deserved.
