I hired this company for tree and shrub trimming. The main tree, a maple, is a mature tree, which had become misshapen due to other tree trimmers not taking the time and interest that L.A. Professional Tree Service demonstrated. The owner, Alex, and his employee cautiously and carefully trimmed the tree, with me watching. I found Alex to have very good vision, but he wanted me to watch to ensure that he and his employee did exactly what I wanted. They DID. (In trimming the tree, they came upon a baby bird which had just hatched and moving, showed it to me, and THEY suggested they tape it back to its home!) Also in their shrub and vine trimming, they were exceedingly careful - but efficient - and it was clear they are experts in their field. Their intrinsic and extrinsic quality compels me to recommend them to everyone I know. Their price is quite reasonable, and I will definitely use this company again. Jared and his crew were simply outstanding! In fact, 4 additional neighbors hired them for their tree pruning because of their excellent work. Jared is very courteous, dependable and professional. His crew has their work routine down to a science - from pruning to clean-up. I would highly recommend them! C. Seay

New bed created on the side of our home, all existing beds prepped, trenched, and 10 yards of mulch installed. All shrubs and trees pruned, full spring clean up completed. Very professional, honest, and I'm very satisfied with the job performed. Price is not the lowest I was quoted but certainly not the highest. Great value for price paid.

Mr. Marshall was professional, responsive, reliable, and efficient, cutting my grass quickly, and without damage to trees or shrubbery, which sometimes happens when weed eating. He maintained a positive attitude, and seemed trustworthy.

Cliff was super affordable and did a great job. He was prompt -- he showed up when he said he would, and wasn't late. He was excellent at communicating and keeping us in the loop on the supplies he was getting and waiting for. He quickly got the job done. Our formerly lumpy yard is graded & levelnow with tree roots ground up, and seed is put down with hay on top. The other two bids we got were 2x and 4x as much. We recommend him highly. Thanks Cliff!

Mike and the guys did a great job for us. They planted 12 trees in under two hours, fertilized and watered and even blew the leaves off the driveway when they cleaned up. Will definitely call again when we need this type of work!

One of the best companies I’ve hired. They take the time to explain everything to you when they come out and give a quote. They do not pressure you to choose them, but instead give you all the facts. I am more knowledgeable now that I have use them. I originally had them coming out to give me a quote for a dead pine tree. Then the storms came through and that went to the back burner. They did both my trees for a great price!! Will be referring and using them again soon.

The Tree Management team tackled a very complex 50' tree removal that included coordinating with interfering power lines and protecting rooftops of adjacent properties. The job was completed safely and all of the debris removed in a timely and professional manner. These men know what they are doing!

Tree and stump removal, weight reduction on several trees. Mitch and his crew did a great job! They were very careful to not cause any damage or tear up my yard. They left the yard looking as good or better than before they started the job, and also made my trees look cleaner/healthier and I'm sure will last a lot longer with less storm damage.

OMG, I was very apprehensive about getting landscapers from Craigslist. I went ahead and called them. Now let me make it perfectly clear I know NOTHING about gardening at all. I just knew I wanted my beds to look better. Eric and his wife came when they said they would and they put in an extremely hot and hard day of labor. His wife knew a whole lot about plants and trees and every thing that was growing and "overgrowing" in my yard. They knew what to cut and what to pull and what to not cut. Whatever apprehension you my have about hiring off Craigslist this amazing couple will surprise you with major results. Also when your thinking about it call, because they are busy, and they have to put you on the schedule.Don't worry you will love the quality of their work.

Needed a tree and shrub removed as well as some trimming of three trees that we wanted to keep in good health. They were very quick to contact me which based upon other companies i asked for quotes from (not thumbtack recommended companies) was not the case. Came out that day for an estimate and were able to complete the work in a reasonable timeframe (~1 week from estimate date). The guys were all friendly and professional and did a great job with our trees. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing work done.

This was great! I asked Tom three questions he got right back to me every time. They came out within a week and Shawn did a fantastic job. HE was careful with my yard and even went the extra mile to watch out for my underground dog fence. I totally forgot it was there and we accidentally cut it...BUT He repaired it and right then! I would highly recommend them. Shawn and Tom both were first class.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
