They did a great job! Had a bathroom fan installed- since we have an older home it took a little bit longer than anticipated and more work to get it working properly. But they knew what they were doing and it works perfect now!

I am a project manager and had a client that wanted a bathroom remodel. However they were having trouble viewing the finished product. I informed them that I work with Scot Childers and one of his services were 3d designs. Scot Childers did the design and ultimately led my clients to go ahead with the remodel. I am confident with out Scot Childers design I would have not gotten the job. Thanks Mr. Childers and look forward to doing more business together.

Kristie was a huge help and blessing as our family chose kitchen and bathroom granite, paint colors and accessories. I am so unsure of my design choices so I very much appreciated Kristie's patient and kind guidance. Our house still looks more tied together and planned thanks to her. She was always on time, patient with me and my young kids and responded to emails and calls promptly. I would definitely recommend Kristie to others and use her services again in the future.

When I advertised on Thumbtack for someone to finish taking down the wallpaper in my guest bathroom and paint the walls, doors, and trim, I really did not expect to find a true artist, but that is exactly what Nöel Harris is. The price she quoted was more than fair considering the thought, effort, and expertise she brought to the project. Not only did she do the work originally requested, but she made practical and inexpensive suggestions to make the most of the room. I can't wait to see what she does with the master bath next!

I was in a time crisis and a decorating dilemma and Barry was able to help me get through both issues. He arrived just when I needed extra hands and a sharp decorating eye and he came through for me with his sewing skills, his painting skills, and his terrific sense of color and room design. Thanks for being there when I needed "that guy"!

I Hired Christina Perry to design and decorate my new condo after deciding I didn't know what to do. My condo was a blank canvas and I was completely overwhelmed. I had so many ideas of what I wanted but was unsure of which direction to go. Christina actually cared about keeping my ideas and made them "new and improved" without overdoing it. She presented me with all sorts of options that were geared toward my taste. I loved that she came to me constantly with options and new ideas before I made my decision, that's how I knew she was searching to get the best done for me, and she did!! From paint color to helping me pick out furniture to a custom bookcase and custom dining table (that I love!) and all the finishing touches for all my rooms (living room, dining room, den/wine bar and bedroom). Christina was patient with me all along the way and went above and beyond my expectations. She gave great advice and what would and won’t work in my space. She had great ideas and such vision for how to make my space work for me and my lifestyle. She was extremely attentive with all the details big or small. Working with Christina Perry was best move I ever made. I Highly Recommend her! I am so grateful I found you Christina, you made this process so enjoyable. I love my home and excited to come home every day and see your beautiful craftsmanship! Christina thank you for everything and for being my "Designer Guardian Angel". I love my home!!!!

From the beginning, Tommy made the entire process as easy as possible. He worked around the busy schedule of our family and made time to meet when convenient for us, even on weekends or nights. Tommy did an incredible job of listening to what we needed and wanted out of the home remodel project and created the perfect solution that balanced functionality and budget. He was able to bring a unique insight to the project from his experiences as an architect and the recent remodel of his own home. We were also very impressed with how well Tommy worked as part of our team. He produced a preliminary pricing set of drawings with which we chose a contractor, then met with our chosen contractor and interior designer to finalize the plans with their input to create the most economical design, that included their input. Finally, Tommy has remained involved in the process throughout the construction process to ensure everything is going well and following his design. Tommy has exceeded all our expectations and we recommend him to anyone looking to design a new home or remodel an existing home.

I have been impressed with Rob’s work over the years. He has done some very large projects in Nashville such as designing and building fine custom homes and even building the Harley Davidson store in West Nashville. He also has an entire team dedicated to remodeling, renovations, and home updates. So, when it was time for us to get a custom baby gate and a large wall shelving unit for our bonus room, I called him. He gave us several options for shelving and really thought through the project to offer the most aesthetically appealing design while staying in our budget. All our guests immediately comment on both the gate and shelving unit when they come to visit. The craftsmanship is clearly miles above what a handyman would offer and the team who installed it was cordial and polite. I am now considering adding an observation deck on the back of our home and will call Rob first.

First met Connie about 5 years ago when our house was under construction. She helped with the placement and selection of all the lighting and electrical. She saved me a lot of money by preventing mistakes. I had not planned to consult a pro, but decided that I would save time and money with her help as we put the house together. We've been working on this as time/finances permit. First off, she is very good listener. Also a whiz at reusing items that you already own. We moved some pieces around and then had old family pieces repaired/refinished/recovered and the space really works. We've also shopped for new pieces and light fixtures with her help. She has an impeccable sense of space, scale and color and is well connected with local craftspeople. She can give you as much guidance and help as you want or need. We've had nothing but compliments from visitors to our home and have enjoyed the process instead of it being stressful or frustrating.

I hired Amanda to redo my 4th bedroom that was hardly ever used. I needed it to be more functional for every day living. After much thought and looking we decided to make it an office space/guest room. After the room was complete I was in love! The room is now used almost everyday by my kids whether they are doing homework or having a friend spend the night. Amanda was very affordable, dependable, creative and she stayed within my budget, which was very important to me. I will use her again and I would recommend her to anyone!

Wayne recently replaced a bedroom floor, installed new windows and did a bathroom remodel for us, with a new tile floor, refurbishing cabinets, changing out the fixtures and adding a beadboard to the lower halves of the walls. He had great suggestions for ways to improve the look of the bathroom. The hardwood floors look terrific and Wayne went above and beyond when he found a way to get a large closet done with the available materials, (which had not been computed to include the closet.) The windows look great and no more leaks.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
