Introduction: Hey! My name's JP and I am a Music Teacher based out of Nashville, TN. With a Commercial Music degree from Belmont University and an extensive background in performing live, session work in the studio, and producing, I am confident that I can help you reach your goals on the guitar. What are my lessons like? As a teacher, I ensure my lessons are fun and engaging while simultaneously applying some music theory basics along the way. This approach is effective as students are able to develop a thorough understanding of the guitar while enjoying it just the same. What else do I teach? In addition to teaching the guitar, I offer music theory lessons. The five levels of music theory I studied at Belmont University coupled with classes on arranging for big bands and intense commercial music analysis set me up for success to answer your theory questions. JP is the second guitar teacher I've had since starting to play 3 years ago. I picked up the guitar later in life (in my 50's) so it has been especially challenging, you know working on strengthening your fingers and forcing them to move independently - and quickly! This review is based upon the 3 lessons I've had with JP to date, and I have been incredibly happy working with him thus far. He has been great about integrating the music I enjoy and using different songs and exercises to help with learning new chord shapes and transitions and timing. His follow up is also very helpful as he summarizes the lessons and provides "homework" for the week in-between. I find the audio files he sends me to play along with incredibly useful for my learning style. Again we're early in this new teacher/student relationship, but I am very satisfied thus far and quite optimistic and excited to continue my work with JP. He's also just a nice guy with an easy going personality. That's important to me as well.

I’ve been working with JP for about 6 months and my progression as a guitar player has never been faster. JP does an excellent job of creating a lesson plan that is fun, engaging, and gets results. I really like how he can take more complex topics about theory and provide examples and show how they can be used in practice. Most importantly, JP is a great guy to learn from and hang out with and has even come out to several of my own shows. I look forward to continue working with JP!

I just started with JP, and I am extremely impressed. JP creates a lesson plan that he works through with you. He then shared a note with me that shows me the lesson that we went over, any topics we discussed, and the chords we learned. This note gets added onto after each lesson and will be a great way to track my progress and touch-up on anything I previously learned. Additionally, JP is responsive and willing to help in any way he can.

I've been taking lessons for JP for over a year and he's great! He does a great job at planning lessons to best work for you and what your goals are. I have become a better guitar player of course, but also all around musician from working with him!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
In your first guitar lesson, we will discuss goals and ambitions you have for wanting to learn how to play the guitar, then we will get started! This will allow me to get a good feel of which direction to take in your lessons moving forward.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor’s degree in Commercial Music from Belmont University. Since graduating in 2017, I have had experience touring with artists such as Gabby Barrett (Warner Music Group) and Brandon Lay (EMI) throughout the country and Canada from hole-in-the-wall venues to sharing the same stage with an opening act on Kenny Chesney's stadium tour. In addition to touring, I have had the chance to play with local Nashville acts including my own band called Brother Maven!
