Introduction: I believe that many if not most guitar teachers focus so much on teaching where to put your fingers that they lose sight of teaching how to play music. That perspective is reinforced by the number of people who come to me with years of lessons under their belt that still can't play with confidence and freedom. I teach the guitar as a musical instrument - a tool for expressing musical ideas that begin in the ears and head, but come out through the fingers. One student of mine put it beautifully, and allowed me to quote her on my website: "Other teachers can teach you to play a song. Dave teaches you to play guitar". I spend my days sharing something I love with people who share that love. That makes me very fortunate by any standard.
