Jesse did a wonderful job on our master suite renovation. We closed on our house and he went straight to work the next day and worked long days to get what we wanted done in a timely manner so we could get moved in quick! With a good price and quality of work we already have him lined up to do more jobs in our home! He is our go to guy for all our construction related needs!!

Chris was absolutely awesome, and we are really pleased with our new tile bathrooms. He went above and beyond and was very affordable. He was also prompt and on time and arrived when he said that he would. We left him in our home for two days and had no worries with leaving our home in his hands. We will definitely be using Chris in the future for our home repair and renovation needs.

Clayton did an excellent job repairing a crack in my ceiling. He spent the time making sure the job was done correctly and not just patching a crack. I was very happy with the results. He was quick, polite and easy to work with scheduling. His price was also very reasonable. I plan on using him in the future for home repairs.

Our relationship with Curtis started with a deck demo/expansion and quickly grew into a near-total home renovation, including: Full deck demolition and expansion during the 2016 ice storm - aka no power! Gas line installation to grill on deck and cooktop in kitchen. Replacement of fully tiled shower off kitchen with shelving storage. Replacement of vanity and commode. Installation of over the range microwave/vent. Full electrical panel replacement in home and subpanel at pool. Drastic widening of opening between entry way and living room. Complete flooring removal and replacement in 60% of house. Stair retreading and replacement with stain to match flooring. Complete popcorn ceiling removal in entire home. Whole home baseboard and crown moulding installation. Painting of all interior walls. Complete replacement of all interior doors with solid wood doors. Removal, resizing, and replacement of front door. Complete gut of second upstairs bathroom and installation of new tub, heated tile, fixtures, vanity, etc. Complete gut of master bathroom and installation of new custom doorless shower, heated tile, fixtures, vanity, Toto washlet, etc. We are very pleased with Curtis' work and at this point consider him a friend. As such, we have referred him to several neighbors, colleagues and friends, and will do so again.

Originally hired for just paint, when walls were completed I couldn’t help but to start wanting more of my house transformed. Although I changed the length of the scope of work and was also indecisive about choosing out the details, Shane was extremely patient with me requesting more projects and completing them as timely as he could. I wanted high quality work, not a rushed job. Very meticulous and even worked throughout the weekends and holidays to get the job done. From hiring him to just paint walls, I hired him to complete most of my renovation: Painting, hardwood, tiles, kitchen, door handles, deck stain, pressure washing, down to the wiring. I highly recommend for good quality work. I’ve attached some before and after photos. Went from a home with a “90’s feel to a modernized contemporary feel. The pictures speak for its self.

Mr. Gaylord did an excellent job installing platforms for my home entertainment system that were very sturdy and were well finished. He also installed shelving for a basement garage in order to help organize that space and open up an area for a woodworking shop. He was prompt, efficient, honest and insightful. I give him my highest recommendation for his carpentry and handyman services.

Chris just completed my kitchen remodel last week and I'm very pleased with how it turned out. So beautiful and sleek. My friends came over and they were in awe of my new kitchen. Everything was done from top to bottom (New Electrical Lighting, Plumbing, Painting, Tile Backsplash, Granite Countertops, Cabinets & New Flooring). I am a local sheriff and I did my homework on this contractor. While I understood he had few bad clients in the past, the positive reviews outweighed the negative ones plus he had references which I also checked them out. Not only those items I also looked into his previous projects. I realized that not every contractor is perfect and that we all make mistakes in life. The important thing that stood out about him was his professionalism and his approach to the project with every details. He took photos of the whole progress as well as documenting every work he performed. To me, this means that he took every consideration in making sure I was happy with the progress. I ended up having him redo the ENTIRE main level in my house. New stairwell with hardwood treads and white risers also upgraded my handrail with new stain to match the hardwood flooring and steps. Chris is somebody you should consider hiring to do the work. He knows just about everything from a design standpoint to trade work. He has a design software to make kitchen 3D drawings and he sells 3 different brands of cabinets. I ended up going with Homecrest due to more viable options they offered at a reasonable price. He also do all the installation of new cabinets. You get 3 in 1 service for a decent price. I went to Home Depot and Lowe's to get quotes and they charge almost 10% to 15% more than Chris' price.I was able to get 2 lazy susans, spice rack, pull out drawers with utensil cans, soft close drawers and doors, food panty with pull-out drawers that also feature soft close, wine cabinet to store wine glasses underneath as well as wine for stocking purpose. All of the options I wanted Chris was able to stay under budget. I could not be more pleased with my new kitchen. It looks like something you'd see in a magazine. I showed Chris some photos that I found on Houzz and he was able to accomplish that by making my kitchen look super beautiful. Beside his work, he is a very nice gentleman. I'm a widow and have 3 young children. My husband passed away at age 43. Chris took great care of us all during his time working on my house. I will hire him back to remodel upstairs in a year or two when I save up more money. He is someone you can also trust to do all these things. We both became good friends afterward. I have attached few photos of my new kitchen. Please consider him for any of your projects. Thank you, K. Jam

Even small renovations are not easy....this was a big one. Chris, Ryan, and Ian were great to work with and were willing to discuss even the most complicated parts of the project in detail. Many contractors I spoke with prior to selecting Williamz seemed to want a chunk of money up front with a “trust me we’ll take care of everything” kind of approach....not a good fit for me. With Williamz, I really felt like we were partners in the process. They latched on to the vision I had for the project, added to it, and seemed genuinely excited to be apart of the transformation; people that enjoy what they do and are excited about doing it do better work. No big job comes without the unexpected, but I was always informed and always allowed to participate in the solution process. I don’t think I could have found a better fit for the job and certainly don’t think I could have a better end product than what they delivered. Highly recommend work. Highly recommended people.

Sky was so great to work with when we had our 23 year old roof replaced. Even when our insurance company was trying to cheat us out of money due to the age of the roof, he has fought and is still fighting to make sure we get our fair share. His team of roofers had to work with little notice since weather can change so rapidly in early January and it was done in 2 days. I would highly recommend this company for any of your upcoming home projects.

ReCom contractor Is a highly professional, and more importantly, trustworthy company. We had interviewed other renovation companies and know the the many horror stories from friends and neighbors about selecting the wrong ones. Amin was always professional, patient and courteous. He showed a high level of responsiveness and respect. We enjoyed working with all of you. We would definitely use this company again and would recommend you and your company without reservation.‎

We hired Sandoval Painting for our two properties to paint exterior and interior. Jelson and Hernand are awesome, very polite and work quick. We really liked their job, especially, after having quality issues with our previous painter. I would recommend them to anyone who needs painting project!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
