Stan is a highly skilled and very professional massage therapist. He was easy to contact, prompt in reply, flexible in response to scheduling conflicts that emerged and right on time. He is very polite, friendly and courteous. He listened closely to my massage therapy needs and came up with an appropriate course of session that left me completely relaxed and rejuvenated. I felt so much more flexible after Stan's comprehensive therapy. During the therapy he made sure to ask me whether or not I was comfortable with the pressure he was applying. I have had hundreds of massages by scores of therapists in many countries and cities, and I would rate Stan among the very best. I have had two excellent sessions from him and I look forward to many more in the future. He is great.

Shayna is by far the best massage therapist I've ever had the pleasure of seeing! She genuinely cares about her clients' well-being and has TONS of modalities and experience under her belt to help anyone feel their best. I have known Shayna for years, both professionally and personally (full disclosure--we are high school friends). Not only is she an incredibly sweet and wonderful human being, I can honestly say you'd be hard-pressed to find a more warm, talented, knowledgeable massage therapist. She does different types of therapeutic massage as well as your basic relaxation-oriented styles, and is exemplary at all of them. If you're tired of the cookie-cutter experience and want something more personalized toward your needs, if you want a therapist who has been passionate about massage all her life (literally!), go see Shayna. You'll thank me for the recommendation--but more importantly, your refreshed-and-rejuvenated body will thank you!

My wife and I both use Carla for massage therapy and relaxation. I have had low back pain for over two decades. I am still very active with long distance running and playing basketball. Carla helps keep my body "in the game." She has helped me recover from back pain and stiffness, plantar fasciitis, and achilles tendinitis. She helps my wife with neck/shoulder pain and stiffness. We both highly endorse Carla and are so glad we found her on thumbtack about 8 months ago. Besides helping us reduce pain and stiffness, her massage technique is very relaxing. She has "healing hands."

Ruriko arrived on time. After asking some questions about my concerns. I have phantom pains and suffer from PTSD, along with other injuries causing me discomfort. Her caring personality and massage techniques allowed me to sleep peacefully through the night and my phantom pains were not as strong as before. I will keep using her and recommend her to anyone. A true massage therapist

While I am not at all new to receiving massage therapy, I must say that I had not up until now had an experience like I did at Luxe A Skin Spa with Donna McClimans! She is extremely knowledgeable about the anatomy as it pertains to the musculature,, connective tissue and assessment of issues. Another outstanding feature of the whole experience was that it was very personal and that is possibly the single most important thing to me in any interaction I have with another human being. She is not simply a massage therapist, she teaches, advises and more importantly, she listens. I went to see her in quite a bit of pain, left feeling significantly better in body and soul. By the way, if she advises you to do some after care at home, please do it. You will be glad you did!! Thank you so much Donna. Peace and blessings to you!

He has helped my chronic back pain more than the previous spinal injections, physical therapy and pain meds. I am now pain free. When I have flare ups a few touch up sessions are all I need.

He was absolutely wonderful. After a long morning of photography clients I was in a lot of pain and knew I needed some massage therapy. Since I had more clients at sunset I was VERY short on time. As a middle aged woman with fibromyalgia and multiple old sports injuries, I am very difficult to massage. He sent me a quote just 5 minutes after I posted the project with a better than good price. He was at the hotel on time (and even waited for me since I had to run an errand). He was extremely professional and was very knowledgable of his craft. He promptly recognized my trouble areas and was able to relieve almost all of my pain in 90 minutes! That's amazing because as I mentioned earlier I am difficult to massage because of my pain levels. I HIGHLY recommend him and will use him again if I'm in the Houston or Galveston areas!!!! And he dealt with my rowdy bunch of roommates with professionalism ;-)

Steve was perfect! I surprised my mom with an in-house massage for her birthday. Steve did so fantastic that my mom is still talking about how loose and relaxed she is. She really enjoyed the aroma therapy and Steve's expertise with hot stones. He really made it easy for me to give back to my mom because she is more than deserving. Thank you Steve for being awesome.

I have been a weekly client of Holistic Health Solutions for the past 7 years. I receive an ionic foot bath and reflexology therapy each week and I'm extremely impressed with the results. I have an extremely stressful job and Blondel's expertise is instrumental in keeping me healthy and centered on my goals. In therapy Blondel has been able to identify areas that I need to concentrate on for ultimate health. I am a firm believer in Blondel's abilities as a reflexologist and I wouldn't go anywhere else. I've used other reflexologist but the experience at Holistic Health Solutions is far beyond a spa treatment. It is true investment in your health and Blondel is the best in his profession.

Tash ian the BEST massage therapist EVER in the whole world. I hesitate to write her an amazing review because once people find out about her, she isn't going to be available for me. Tash can get out any muscle knot!!! You might say "ouch" but when she is done, you will say; "Oh My Dog! I feel amazing!" She is smart and has intuition and her massage therapy is truly a gift from God!!! On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the highest), I give Tash a 100! Best therapist EVER!!!

Tom was everything the other reviews promised. Punctual, professional, compassionate. His studio was immaculate and very quiet considering its convenient downtown location. Tom was willing to visit as little or as much as I wanted, and his work was so good that I managed to "drift off" for minutes at a time. I was looking for a new, regular, "go-to" therapist, and I have found him in Tom. I can't recommend him more highly.

I have had several deep tissue massages from Cathy. She listens to you and focuses on your areas in need of attention. I always feel relaxed and very comfortable knowing that she customizes every massage according to my needs. She uses Hot Stones and Hot Towels on every massage. I always instantly feel better knowing she finds all my muscle knots and works them out.l highly recommend a massage from Cathy.

I have been using the Healing Hands service for about 17 years. I don't remember them being online before, but the owner Linda is a born healer. She has helped me with various different therapies. There are really no words that reflect how wonderful I feel after she has massaged me. I suffer from chronic back, neck and shoulder pain following a car accident. I can't recommend her service enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
