Arrived on time. The installation went quickly. Did a good job except he didn't put in the lights. Left it open for me to do later. Maybe that's the standard in the garage door industry, but if I'm doing a job, I'm going to complete it.

Justin and Russ were great to work with. I had a garage door opener installed. They worked timely and did great work in a short period of time. In addition they programmed several neighborhood gate clickers for me as well as some other neighbors. Justin gave me his personal cell to address any invoicing and appointment issues my HOA was having. Russ walked me through the programming and features of the new opener as well as warned me about a spring issue I currently have I will be using them again in the future for garage door needs

Frank and his son installed a bathroom vanity, shower faucets, and lighting fixtures for us. After our previous handyman left our bathroom projects unfinished, we were a little wary of hiring a new one. Frank had such outstanding reviews that we felt safe trying him. His reviews are spot on! Frank has such a genuine, friendly personality. We were pleased with his work, positive attitude, and helpfulness. We are also hiring Frank to install our new garage door opener and future projects! Hire this handyman & you won't regret it!

I hired Ever to do 3 jobs for me. Paint and texture my entire garage, epoxy the garage floor, and paint my concrete patio in the back all one color. He showed up with his team on friday ready to work and knocked out all the garage prep work, taping off and texture. On Saturday he painted the entire garage, did the epoxy, and painted the patio. I came home from work at night and just stood at my open garage grinning and shaking my head with complete satisfaction. He did an amazing job and went above and beyond to guarantee my wife and I were very happy! He even painted and mounted our shelves and flag brackets, and cut and made a better attic lid cover for us which I really appreciated. We will be calling Ever back for any future plans we have in the future. My wife and I will be hiring again for more work!!!

Christopher Blake did it again!! My brother didn't know that a garage door opener had been installed. He opened the garage door without using the button. It was still working but made a funny noise. Mr Blake was out the next morning, and despite the fact that it was our fault and him having to come out more than once, he only charged a small fee. I'm really impressed and wanted to express my gratitude.

Ron provided me with excellent advice and work for my kitchen remodel. He was a true professional and also personable therefore put me at ease on our first meeting. He was patient with me and my indecision. He also provided me with excellent guidance in making decisions. It was apparent that he has a wealth of knowledge in remodeling.. His recommendations proved to be spot on. He saved me hundreds of dollars on my beautiful new sink by knowing the product. My new kitchen is beyond my expectations and I could not be happier. He transformed my 30 year old kitchen into a lovely open space. He removed a wall, relocated electrical outlets and switches. He chose the perfect granite and created a light and open new space with a beautiful bar. He supervised the installation of the granite to ensure perfection. He removed wall paper, textured and repaired the walls and painted. He removed old baseboards and installed lovely new ones. He replaced two doors and hardware. He converted my old wood stained kitchen cabinets to white. He reinforced weak spots and even rebuilt one of the cabinet doors to perfection. He repaired the ceiling where a wall was removed, matched the pop corn expertly and painted. My new subway tile backsplash is fabulous. With new lighting and new faucets he attended to every detail. I have many more projects for my 30 year old house and I will be hiring Ron for each one. He is completely trustworthy. He works when he says and cleans up leaving a neat and organized area. He safe guarded my new hard wood floors an protected my furniture. He is flexible and pleasantly made adjustments to the project as I changed my mind. He was available to answer questions and help me understand next steps although he was not on the job when I needed to inquire. I will be honored to serve as a reference for Ron and do highly recommend him.

Simple things we take for granted like our automatic garage door openers working properly can be a big pain in the rear. The folks at 1st choice garage doors made things easier. Showing up as scheduled on time is always a good thing. I really appreciated the trouble shooting that was done to make sure that the work that was done was needed. I even added a key pad since they saved me money and repaired instead of replaced. They were respectful of my home and they were professional as well. To be honest the cost of repairs was less than I had anticipated.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

  • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
    • Without insulation: about $900
  • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700
    • Without insulation: $550
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
    • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 16x7 garage door with window in top panels: $5,000
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 8x7 garage door with window in top panels: $3,500

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.
